National Wrestling Alliance / World Championship Wrestling - Saturday, May 4th, 1985
- The show starts off with a clip of Dusty outsmarting Tully in a match, with no voice-over.
- We open up with David Crockett, Tony Schiavone...and Ric Flair and Magnum TA on the same stage with their belts. Flair looks miffed.
- Flair starts by putting Magnum over, and then says Magnum doesn't dress well enough.
- Flair and Magnum jaw at each other a bit and Flair walks off.
- "Cowboy" Ron Bass w/JJ Dillon vs. Gene Ligon
- Basic power moves by Bass, taking Ligon apart.
- While the match is in progress, Crockett and Schiavone announce that Ole and Arn Anderson are the new National Tag Team Champions, but the situation is far from over.
- Some mat wrestling from Bass.
- It is also announced that Tully Blanchard is the new Television Champion. In the meantime it is noted that we will see Dusty's gorilla today.
- Bass continues the squash. Stomp, stomp, stomp. Working on the left arm. JJ gives advice from ringside.
- Ligon gets some forearm shots in, but it doesn't last long.
- Cover by Bass, but Ligon gets a leg over the bottom rope.
- Big punch by Bass with the gloved right hand.
- Crockett notes that Bass is starting to work on Ligon's head, setting up for the end.
- Big kneelift to the head.
- It's the clawhold. Ligon down to his knees...down on his back...three-count.
- Your Winner: "Cowboy" Ron Bass via pinfall.
- Bass doesn't want to let go of the hold.
- Paul Jones with Abdullah The Butcher. Jones really looks like Moe of The Three Stooges.
- Jones says he's not going to sleep until he puts Valiant out permanently. Money is no object.
- After the commercial, Schiavone is with a still-mute Jimmy Valiant. Valiant does his best to thank the fans with his voice, to no avail. So, he writes "I Love You All - We Are The World" on a chalkboard.
- Jimmy Valiant vs. Randy Barber
- Vailiant goes to work on Barber before the bell rings.
- Jones is with the announcers at ringside.
- Valiant gets a sleeper on Barber, but Barber gets to the ropes.
- Barber looks like a transporter accident with Arn Anderson and Buzz Sawyer.
- Valiant is choking Barber and pointing at Jones.
- Crockett accuses Jones of being afraid of Valiant.
- Valiant pins Barber after an...elbow drop? Man, that's some elbow.
- Your Winner: Jimmy Valiant via pinfall.
- Valiant goes to the announcers area and chases Jones into the ring.
- Valient starts choking Jones out in the ring, but Abdullah gets Valiant from behind, and gives him repeated thrusts to the throat.
- Three big elbows from Abdullah to Valiant's throat as Jones holds Valiant down.
- Gene Ligon and another jobber try to make the save, but they don't even make it into the ring before Abdullah sends them packing.
- Abdullah still working on Valiant's throat.
- Magnum TA with two jobbers in tow finally make the save. Last week, Dusty said he was with Valiant to the end. Apparently, tonight he was too busy with his gorilla.
- Schiavone is with the NWA World Tag Team Champions, The Koloffs.
- Has anyone besides me noticed how much Ivan Koloff sounds like Cookie Monster?
- Ivan Koloff reads a fan letter. Really...I'm not kidding.
- Nikita says that Ric Flair is soft.
- In a presumably title match, NWA World Television Champion Tully Blanchard w/Baby Doll vs. Dale Williams
- I hate to state the obvious, but isn't it sort of odd that the TV Title changed hands and it wasn't on TV?
- Tully has got his belt, and he and Baby Doll are looking quite pleased with themselves.
- Baby Doll talks some smack to Williams before the match.
- Tully struts a bit, and then he goes right to work on Williams' left knee.
- After a little physical punishment, Tully starts in with the head games...the head games and insults are well beyond anything we've seen in his previous matches.
- Tully wth an Indian Death Lock. You don't see that anymore.
- Crockett hits the situation on the head saying that it's like a cat playing with a mouse.
- Tully switches to working on the left arm.
- Clean break by Tully.
- Crockett notes that Tully really hasn't done anything illegal in the match thus far except for one pull of the tights.
- Tully keeps dumping Williams out of the ring.
- A few punches by Williams, but he gets a couple big knees for his trouble.
- Blanchard with a punch, kick, punch, kick, et al.
- Slap from Baby Doll as Williams is in the ropes.
- Tully starts really humiliating Williams.
- More punishment, including a nice standing dropkick from Tully.
- Finally, a slingshot suplex and the three-count.
- Your Winner: And still NWA World Television Champion, Tully Blanchard.
- Schiavone interviews the new NWA National Tag Team Champions, Ole & Arn Anderson. Classic interviews by both Ole and Arn.
- Black Bart vs. Kent Glover
- Black Bart with the power moves. Slam's Glover's head into the turnbuckles. Punches. Drops Glover on the top rope.
- Big suplex, big knee drop.
- Big chop. Big bite on the forehead.
- Big chop to the throat.
- Big clubbing blow to the back.
- Big right hand to the chest.
- Very slow and methodical...I can type the moves faster than he delivers them.
- Two big whips in the turnbuckles.
- Big double axehandle. Two big kicks to the head.
- Big head to the turnbuckle, and another big bite.
- Glover's tossed out to the floor.
- Bart pulls him big in.
- Big clubbing blow to the chest..man, that really did looked like it hurt a LOT.
- Whip and a big back body drop.
- Fist to the head, two head slams to the mat. The announcers are enamored with how Bart uses his enormous size to his advantage.
- Big clothesline and big knee to the head.
- Ron Bass comes to ringside and apparently whispers instructions to Bart.
- Big shot to Glover's chest. Snapmare. Bass goes back to the dressing room.
- The audio is kind of funny...the crowd is silent, so you hear everything that Bart is saying. "The one's for you, Bass!"
- No joke...Glover's getting the bejeesus beat out of him here.
- Side chinlock on the mat.
- Bart says he's going to pop Glover's head like a pimple. Hah!
- Announcers are wondering if the ref is going to rule Glover as unable to continue.
- Big shot to the chest, head to the turnbuckle, rear chinlock on the mat...for a long time.
- Glover gets to his feet, and Bart gives a clubbing blow to the back.
- Head to the top turnbuckle as the crowd is shouting "Boring!". For sure, Glover is anything but bored at the moment.
- The announcers note that Black Bart is gunning for Ronnie Garvin's National Heavyweight Title.
- Big body slam.
- Finally...a legdrop from the second turnbuckle by Bart, and 1-2-3, it's over.
- Your Winner: Black Bart via pinfall.
- Crockett and Schiavone wish Ralph & Thelma Jacobs of Clearwater FL a happy 60th wedding anniversary.
- Dusty is here with a bandage on his head, no Television Belt, and some bananas.
- Dusty says it is a disappointing time in his life, but Tully Blanchard has his work cut out for him trying to keep the belt.
- Dusty says he's going to bring out his gorilla. They uncover the cage, and it's obviously a person in a gorilla suit.
- Dusty talks to the "gorilla" for a while, and then sends Schiavone to talk to the gorilla.
- The announcers are laughing, but acting as if it's a real gorilla.
- That was really stupid.
- In a non-title match, NWA US Heavyweight Champion Magnum TA vs. Golden Terror
- This isn't going to last long.
- Golden Terror attempts to attack before the bell.
- Body slam, dropkick, whip to the ropes, belly-to-belly suplex, and it's over.
- While that was going on, we had time to cut to the "gorilla". The gorilla is peeling a banana but obviously can't eat it because its face is a mask without a real mouth.
- Egads...was this gorilla the inspiration for the Robocop appearance?
- Your Winner: NWA US Heavyweight Champion Magnum TA via pinfall
- Schiavone interviews Ron Bass, and asks about the black glove. Bass says he's not a pretty boy...he's interested in putting pretty boys in the claw hold.
- In a non-title match: NWA/WCW World Heavyweight Chamption Ric Flair vs. Rocky King
- As the scene opens, Flair is in the ring, standing at the ropes, talking trash to Magnum TA who is in the announcers area.
- Actually, it's not "trash", it's Ric saying how he is "what's happening in wrestling today". Flair is at his cool and cocky best.
- I think that Magnum is trying not to crack up because Flair is just so over the top. He's telling Magnum "Don't get jealous". The crowd loves Flair.
- Lock up, and a commercial.
- Back to it, a back elbow by Flair, a suplex by Flair, and Flair drops an elbow. Figure-four in the center of the ring, and Rocky King promptly submits.
- Your Winner: NWA/WCW World Heavyweight Chamption Ric Flair.
- Flair immediately rolls out of the ring and goes to confront Magnum TA, who is with Schiavone and Crockett.
- Flair: "I'm gonna tell you something, because I'm the World Champion. I'm going to Florida next week, I'm going to lay in the sun, I'm going to drive the women wild, and I'm going to beat any man who thinks he's man enough to be in the position that I hold in life."
- Flair offers to show the fans why he's the man, if Magnum is willing to slide out of his $2.95 vest.
- Magnum immediately rolls into the ring.
- Flair stalls...saying that Magnum doesn't understand the risk he's taking.
- Flair goes into the ring...and right back out. Magnum stalks from inside the ring.
- Flair says that at this point in Magnum's career, he doesn't need to suffer a major upset, so Flair is going cut him a break and leave.
- As soon as Flair leaves, NWA World Television Champion Tully Blanchard comes out with Baby Doll. Tully puts over TBS, puts over himself, puts down Dusty, and leaves.
- Back from commercial, Dusty is back with a banana, and he wants to name his gorilla "Baby Doll Number Two". The gorilla growls into the microphone, and then has trouble keeping his mask on.
- In a non-title match: NWA National Tag Team Champions Ole & Arn Anderson vs. Gerald Findlay and Richard Dye
- Ole starts out against Findlay. Ole takes him down...Arn's tagged in...Dye's tagged in...Ole's tagged back in...Arn's tagged back in.
- It's all Andersons thus far.
- Arn working on the arm on the mat, and Ole is tagged in.
- Kick, punch, twist, kick...Arn is tagged on...more punishment on Dye's arm.
- Ole is tagged in, he dives on the arm...Arn is tagged in...he yanks on the arm and gets a submission.
- Your Winners: NWA National Tag Team Champions, Ole & Arn Anderson
- Back from commercial, Schiavone is with the Andersons. Arn says they have what Fernandez and Patterson want, and dares them to come for them. Ole tells them not to talk about it...he wants them to do it. Ole mentions they may get "one chance". Good salesmanship on his part, so anytime it is advertised at a show, the fans think it's a one-time opportunity.
- Pez Whatley vs. Doug Vines
- Pez with basic, yet effective maneuvers, with some dancing afterwards.
- The announcers are talking about a fan letter that suggests a tag team tournament.
- Vines gets a reversal or two, but is never able to turn it into anything positive.
- Whatley with a reversal and a running headbutt and it's over.
- That was quick.
- Your Winner: "Pistol" Pez Whatley via pinfall.
- Schiavone interviews Black Bart. Bart things the "superstars" are ducking him...he wants some competition...and he's quite angry. Man, he's got a hairy face.
- Nikita Koloff w/ Ivan Koloff vs. Allan Martin
- Ooooh...this isn't going to go well for Martin.
- Shove by Nikita.
- Martin just keeps bouncing off Nikita.
- Nikita is just manhandling the poor schmuck.
- Meanwhile, the gorilla is thrashing about in his cage.
- Slam by Nikita, followed by a blatant chokehold on the mat.
- Russian Sicle, and it's over.
- Your Winner: Nikita Koloff via pinfall.
- It just occurs to me as I'm watching this that Ronald Reagan is president, and he's just started his second term.
- Schiavone is with the Koloffs. Nikita is yelling at the camera, and the gorilla is throwing banana peels at them. The Koloffs are distracted by the gorilla as they are ranting and raving.
- Are we not supposed to know it's a man in a gorilla suit?
- Ivan stands close enough to the cage so that the gorilla can steal Ivan's headband. The gorilla starts eating the handband.
- * sigh *
- The Good: Ole & Arn together on the microphone, and together in the ring.
- The Bad: Jimmy Valiant's "We Are The World".
- The Ugly: The gorilla angle. It was ridiculous.
