This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 10/28/96
- The evening started out with showing Sting up on a catwalk wearing face paint that made him look like a sad mime.
- Steve Regal def. Juventud Guerrera via submission with a Regal Stretch to retain the World Television Title.
- After the match, Steve Regal walked off and missed his interview. Man, I love live television.
- Steve Regal looks like he's dropped a few pounds since he went on tour. Good thing.
- Diamond Dallas Page def. Mean Mike Enos via pinfall following a Diamond Cutter. Hall & Nash were cheering on DDP through the match.
- Dean Malenko def. Jim Powers via pinfall with a roll through while referree Nick Patrick was distracting Powers.
- Jeff Jarrett def. Ricky Morton via submission with a figure-four leglock.
- The only thing better than seeing Ricky Morton job is seeing him job via submission.
- After the match, Jarrett did a seeming shoot interview deriding Hogan and The Giant.
- High Voltage def. The Amazing French-Canadians via DQ when The Nasty Boys rushed the ring and pummelled High Voltage to send a message to the nWo. The Nasty Boys' tirade after the pummelling generated no heat from the crowd.
- Ray Misterio, Jr. def. Jimmy Graffitti (Backlund) via pinfall after a head scissors and a roll.
- Chris Benoit (dislocated shoulder) def. Eddy Guerrero (broken ribs) via pinfall after Steve McMichael whacked Guerrero in the ribs with the metal suitcase.
- Nick Patrick and his lawyer did an interview and jawed with Teddy Long and Chris Jericho. The announcers keep mentioning that Teddy Long used to be a senior referee. They are conveniently forgetting that the reason he is no longer a referee is that he did the same thing (turn heel referee) that Nick Patrick is now doing.
- Booker T. def. Lex Luger via countout when Luger ran out of the ring to confront Sting instead of racking Booker T.
- After a replay of Hogan and Piper's confrontation from Halloween Havoc, Hogan came out and made like Piper ran away from him. Then Hogan did some posing. *yawn*
WCW Halloween Havoc - Sunday, 10/27/96
- Dean Malenko def. Ray Misterio, Jr. via pinfall with a power bomb off the top rope to win the Cruiserweight championship in an excellent, cleanly fought match.
- Diamond Dallas Page def. Eddie Guerrero via pinfall following a diamond cutter to win the battle bowl ring back which Nick Patrick, for some unexplained reason, had in his pocket.
- Randy Savage picked out the winner of the monster truck. He certainly did not seem like a guy on the verge of killing someone.
- The Giant def. Jeff Jarrett via DQ after Ric Flair gave The Giant a low blow outside the ring. This match had a terrible workrate.
- Syxx def. Chris Jericho via pinfall after a spinning back kick. Syxx benefitted from at least three very slow three counts by Nick Patrick. After the match, Nick Patrick help Syxx back to the dressing room.
- Lex Luger def. Arn Anderson via submission via The Human Torture Rack after repeated whacks on Anderson's back with a chair outside the ring.
- Anderson was taken out on a stretcher after the match due to the extended length of time Luger kept him in The Human Torture Rack.
- The high point of the match was when Luger was laying on the floor outside the ring and one of the humanoids through popcorn all over him.
- There was excellent camera work when Luger was whacking Anderson with the chair. As the chair was making contact, the camera angle was just so that you couldn't see that the chair was really making contact with the ground rather than Anderson's back.
- Chris Benoit & Steve McMichael def. The Faces of Fear via pinfall after Meng was hit with the metal suitcase and Benoit gave him a flying headbutt. The Dungeon of Doom rushed the ring after the match and destroyed Benoit and McMichael despite the fact that Benoit fought off four men on his own for a while.
- McMichael must have trained with Meng for this match as McMichael never really worked in the match at all with Barbarian.
- The Sullivan/Woman angle was furthered a little.
- The Outsiders def. Harlem Heat via pinfall to win the World Tag Team Belts when Hall pinned Stevie Ray after a clobbering by Nash with Parker's cane. Basically, Parker handed the cane to Nash and ran off.
- The crowd was definitely behind the nWo in this match.
- At the beginning of the match, the crowd was more interested in the real fight between two humanoids in the stands than what was going on in the ring.
- After a wrestler was dropped crotch-first onto the top rope, Dusty commented, "You're nuts if you don't think that hurts!"
- Hulk Hogan def. Randy Savage via pinfall on a total screw job by Nick Patrick. Observations at random:
- Hogan hawked his two new movies on the microphone on the way down to the ring. It was really obnoxious.
- Hogan's weight used to be 308 but he was announced at 269.
- Hogan wrestled the first few minutes wearing his sunglasses.
- People threw Slim Jims at Savage whenever he was on the ground outside the ring.
- Hogan got his tights pulled down for a full moon twice during the match.
- During the match, Savage pulled off Hogan's toupee and starting wearing it and eventually made Hogan eat it.
- The match had a typical lousy Hogan workrate.
- After the match, bagpipe music came on and Rowdy Roddy Piper came to the ring to confront Hogan. In what seemed like a shoot interview, Piper really gave Hogan a hard time and eventually time ran out and they were cut off. The announcers kept saying all evening long that WCW needed a leader. This may be the new angle.
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 10/27/96
- Harlem Heat sans Sherri and Parker def. Rough and Ready via pinfall when Mike Enos was pinned immediately after a Harlem Hangover.
- Diamond Dallas Page def. Chavo Guerrero Jr. via pinfall following a diamond cutter.
- Arn Anderson gave an interview where he said he was going to end Luger's career at Halloween Havoc. We can only hope.
- Sullivan, Meng, Barbarian, and Big Bubba def. four jobbers who the announcers didn't even name via pinfall after Bubba's side slam. Maxx Muscle must be hurt because he always comes to the ring but never wrestles.
- Jeff Jarrett was interviewed. I don't get what the attraction is with this guy. Neither do the other fans, I guess, since he was roundly booed on his first appearance on Nitro. I hope he gets chokeslammed tonight.
- "Lionheart" Chris Jericho def. Manny Fernandez via pinfall with a somersault from the second rope.
- Ice Train defeated Scott Norton via pinfall with a rollup when Teddy Long distracted Norton. This was a first for Teddy Long, causing one of his men to win rather than lose.
Unfortunately, it's becoming obvious that the rumors of Okerlund returning to WCW must be true seeing as starting last night they are suddenly starting to show a lot of old clips with him in them. I just don't understand why they continue to employ this guy, much less at the reported $200,000 or so a year.
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 10/26/96
- The team of Rough and Ready def. Harlem Heat via disqualification when Colonel Parker interfered even though Harlem Heat had the match under control. There is definitely a split coming with Col. Parker and Harlem Heat at Halloween Havoc as I think he is going to cause the loss of the belts to The Outsiders. After the post-match interview, one of the Heat told the Outsiders to "Shove it!".
- Jeff Jarrett def. The Roadblock via submission with a figure-four leglock
- Eddy Guererro def. J.L. via pinfall following a frog splash
- Dean Malenko def. Alex Wright via pinfall with a rolling body scissors. Dean Malenko was able to win the match due to a slow count in his favor by Nick Patrick.
- Jimmy Grafitti def. The Cheetah Kid via pinfall with a somersault off the top rope. Jimmy Grafitti is, in reality, Jim Backlund, son of Bob Backlund. Rocco Rock, one half of Public Enemy, used to be The Cheetah Kid. However, tonight's Cheetah Kid was not fat enough to Rocco Rock.
- Chris Benoit def. Craig "Pit Bull" Pittman via pinfall with a dragon suplex in a return match. After the match, there was definitely some hardway juice on Benoit's face. Again, bad officiating determined the outcome of the match. Pittman got into an argument with Teddy Long, his manager, and Benoit took advantage and secured the win while Pittman was distracted. The post-match interview really convinced me that Benoit needs to get his teeth fixed.
- In the nWo match, Hall and Nash defeated two jobbers with Hall's Razor's Edge. This whole thing with them holding matches in empty auditoriums with a heat machine seems to be marking their turn toward buffoonery.
- The Faces of Fear def. High Voltage via pinfall with a combination kick to the head by Barbarian and powerbomb by Meng.
- Arn Anderson did another great interview about Elizabeth and Luger. I really liked the part about how his wife stays home and keeps her mouth shut when it comes to business. And, as for what he's going to do to Luger, the thumb across the throat said it all.
