This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 12/23/96
- Eddie Guerrero pinned "The Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit with a reverse frog splash off the top rope. Guerrero goes on to meet "Diamond" Dallas Page in the finals for the U.S. Title at Starrcade.
- Benoit came to the ring without Woman.
- In a clip shown while the match was going on, Sullivan, illuminated by spooky lighting, said Benoit has fallen into his trap and has awoken something that he should have let lie.
- "Diamond" Dallas Page came to the announcers' booth to watch the match. He referred to Schiavone as "Poindexter".
- Anyone who went to the Official WCW Home Page over the last two weeks knew Benoit was going to lose this match as he was already listed as fighting Jarrett at Starrcade two weeks prior to this "deciding" match on Nitro.
- The Horsemen were interviewed after the Benoit/Guerrero match. Anderson started off by saying a focused Benoit would not have lost the previous match. Anderson then said he took a beating from Sullivan in Benoit's place on last week's Nitro and wanted to know where Woman was. Benoit said Woman was taking care of Horseman business. Debra said Woman is damaged goods. Benoit got in her face and Steve McMichael promptly got in Benoit's face. Just when things started getting interesting, Flair started dancing around and said after ten years with him (Flair), Woman deserved a weekend with Benoit. With that, the interview ended.
- Coming back from the commercial break, Hogan, Vince, DiBiase, and Elizabeth came to the ring. Hogan waxed on about how Piper was afraid of him. Hogan then did some posing to "entertain the crowd". It was a really sucky spot.
- A preview for "Rowdy" Roddy Piper's new movie, Marked Man, was shown. I've never seen an action movie star do so many pro wrestling moves in a preview.
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger made Tombstone submit with The Human Torture Rack.
- After the match, The Giant came to the ring and attacked Luger. After a 30-second battle, Luger got The Giant fully in The Human Torture Rack. Hall and Nash rushed the ring and Luger made a hasty exit.
- Ray Misterio, Jr. pinned J.L. after headscissoring J.L. off the top rope.
- After the match, Misterio went to the announcers' booth and said Sting was NOT nWo. Misterio said Sting did not try to hurt him when he threw him off in last Monday's melee.
- At Ray's request, the "I Need A Hero" video was replayed. Gee, thanks, Ray.
- Glacier pinned Sgt. Parker after two spinning round kicks.
- As my non-wrestling fan friend who was watching said about Glacier, "Man, he's got some serious gimmickry". Out of the mouths of babes...
- Mike Tenay pointed out that the "126" emblazoned in Glacier's armor was his Dad's state trooper badge number. Heenan said it was the number of doughnuts Glacier's dad ate in a half hour.
- In the grand tradition of blown spots in a Glacier match, Glacier hit the first spinning round kick and Parker powered out even though it was the scripted finish. Glacier, not knowing what to do at that point, hit Parker with the exact same move again, albeit not nearly as well, and Parker got the hint and stayed down.
- The non-wrestling fan asked after the match, "Hey, whatever happened to the Bumbling Bees?"
- The Amazing French-Canadians def. Public Enemy via disqualification when Public Enemy was disqualified for using a table.
- The ending was a non-finish which should have been a double DQ as both sides went to war with the table.
- "Big" Bubba Rogers def. Konnan in what was essentially a handicap match via disqualification when Konnan threw Bubba over
the top rope.
- When Rogers came out showing off his snazzy new nWo shirt, Heenas hypothesized Bubba joined the nWo to get a clean
shirt.
- This match was essentially a handicap match because Nick Patrick, the referee, clearly favored Rogers.
- "Lord" Steven Regal and "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko werstled to a 10-minute time limit draw. Regal retains the World Television Title on the draw.
- Malenko had Regal in a pinning predicament when the bell rang.
- "The Dog-Faced Gremlin" Rick Steiner and Jeff Jarrett wrestled to a non-finish when nWo Sting came to the ring, was about to reverse DDT Jarrett, was clotheslined by Steiner, and the referee counted Jarrett pinning nWo Sting. As they cut to commercial, Jarrett and Steiner were double teaming nWo Sting.
- In what started off as a really lame spot, Hogan came out and said Piper was chicken. Piper's music started playing and Bischoff came out dressed like Piper. Bischoff imitated Piper and said there is no way he could fight Hogan and Bischoff, as Piper, laid on the mat and Nick Patrick counted a three-count. Piper then suddenly came out with a twenty person band. He ran to the ring and started trading blows with Hogan. Hogan sold the punches and Piper didn't. The entire nWo, including Wallstreet and Norton, rushed the ring and held Piper while Hogan beat him. After about twenty seconds, arena security separated everyone and the show ended. While all of this was going on, WCW Sting watched from the rafters.
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 12/22/96
WCW {Pro} Wrestling was preempted this week by movies on TBS.
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 12/21/96
- Jeff Jarrett def. Rex King via submission with a Figure-Four Leglock.
- In the post-match interview, Jarrett challenged Sting to meet him face-to-face like a man.
- During the interview, Jarrett also blamed Chris Benoit for breaking up The Four Horseman and The Dungeon of Doom. Jarrett's position is that the divisive games Benoit is playing are the last thing WCW needs right now.
- My girlfriend commented that Jarrett's interviews are getting better, but I don't know...
- "Diamond" Dallas Page pinned Buckhouse Buck after a Diamond Cutter.
- In the post-match interview, Page called Bischoff "Mr. Bisquick" and Eddie Guerrero "Seņor Eddie".
- "Squire" David Taylor pinned The Gambler with a throw-back-over-the-head slam.
- A montage of the Benoit/Sullivan feud was shown. There were some really good clips of them beating the tar out of one another. They then replayed last Monday Nitro's Benoit/Woman video and followed it up with a short one of them drunk and giggling getting into an elevator and snuggling.
- "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko made Mark Starr submit with the Texas Cloverleaf.
- Scott "Flash" Norton pinned Sgt. Parker after a shoulderbreaker.
- Norton was sporting a spiffy new nWo t-shirt.
- The referee for the match was "The Masked Referee", Nick Patrick in a mask. He went out of his way to make things difficult for Parker.
- High Point Of The Show: Schiavone wondered aloud what Nick Patrick's parents must think about him doing something that's so bad he has to wear a mask. Dusty said: "I know from experience what it's like to be asked about one of your kids wearing a mask and doing strange things and, believe me, it cuts deep". He paused, chuckled and said, "You couldn't get that on the 900 number and I just gave it to you for free!" (For those of you who don't get the gag, Golddust is Dusty Rhodes' son, Dustin Rhodes.)
- After the match, The Masked Referee elbow dropped Sgt. Parker.
- "Lord" Steven Regal was interviewed and he said he wants a shot at Piper after Piper is through beating up Hogan. Regal said Piper reminds him too much of himself, a great talker and ready to fight
at the drop of a hat.
- Eddie Guerrero pinned Disco Inferno following a frog splash.
- Before the match, Disco Inferno grabbed the mike and said he was going to beat Eddie Guerrero with the leg hold that his Uncle Guido from the Vitale Collection Agency taught him.
- During the match, when Disco Inferno had the opportunity, he couldn't figure out how to put the leglock on.
- In the post-match interview, Guerrero said he was going to beat Benoit on Nitro and go to the U.S. Title finals.
- My money is on Guerrero going to the finals since, on the official WCW home page, the U.S. Title finals are listed as "Diamond" Dallas Page vs. TBD, yet further down, Benoit is listed as fighting Jarrett on the same card. I guess Benoit's not in the U.S. Title finals, then. This faux pas has been out there for the last week.
- Lee Marshall interviewed Col. Robert Parker who made fun of the Steiners and said that Scott Steiner is faking his injury.
- M. Wallstreet pinned "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton with an Oklahoma Roll and feet on the ropes after Eaton was purposely tripped by The Masked Referee.
- M. Wallstreet was wearing his nWo t-shirt.
- Bobby Eaton was the victim of general interference and slow counts by The Masked Referee throughout the match.
- In the nWo match, Hall and Nash defeated Alan Storm in a handicap match when Hall pinned Storm after Nash powerbombed him.
- This was one of the oddest set ups I've ever seen. Two great wrestlers handicapping a jobber rather than the other way around. It made absolutely NO sense. As best I can figure, the other jobber who was supposed to fight didn't show.
- Bischoff referred to Ray Misterio, Jr. as The Human Dart.
- DiBiase said Alan Storm had Summer Teeth. "Some are gold, some are missing".
- After the match, the Masked Referee elbow dropped Storm, Bagwell gave him a Rude Awakening, and Hall elbow dropped him.
- And, if that wasn't enough, Bagwell propped Storm up in the corner. Bagwell then gave him a Stinger Splash, Nash gave him a running elbow, Hall gave him a running clothesline, and The Masked Referee splashed him.
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger made Jim Powers submit in The Human Torture Rack. *yawn*
