This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 1/6/97
- Glacier pinned "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton with a cryonic kick and, when that spot was blown, another cryonic kick and, well, when that spot was blown, a third cryonic kick. Finally Bobby Eaton got the hint that even though Glacier couldn't make any of his kicks connect, it was time for a commercial.
- A new record for Glacier, three blown spots in a row to end the match. Now, THAT'S a Valvoline Power Pin of the Week.
- I got an e-mail from a guy who saw Glacier live at the arena for Nitro and he said seeing Glacier live makes you appreciate what a great job WCW does making sure the viewers at home don't hear him being booed.
- Konan def. "Big" Bubba Rogers in a Mexican Four Corners Strap Match when Bubba punched Konan and he fell backwards to touch the fourth corner.
- Bubba's entrance music was not nWo music and Konan's entrance music was not Dungeon of Doom music.
- Bubba did a mudhole stomp on Konan after the match.
- Bubba and Konan had not worked much with the strap before the match as they kept legitimately getting tangled up in it.
- Okerlund interviewed "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan said the war with Benoit was just beginning. Okerlund said he had a videotape to show without Benoit or Woman, but it was someone Sullivan knew well. Sullivan said, "You don't mean..." and Okerlund said "You know EXACTLY who I mean". With that, Sullivan walked off. And, then, well, then they went to commercial without showing the tape.
- The Horseman came out for an interview sans Benoit and Woman. Mongo patted Okerlund on the head and asked, "How you doing, Shiny?" Flair was, as he often is of late, nonsensical. Debra started prattling on and generated a lot of heat. Jarrett appeared uninvited and asked Flair if he wanted a part-time Benoit as a Horseman or a full-time Jarrett. Anderson said no way. Jarrett said to Anderson, "Arn, you've been playing second fiddle for your entire career. First to Ole, then Tully, now Ric. I didn't come to talk to the horse's rear, I came to talk to the lead horse". With that, Arn pearl harbored Jarrett and they fought all the way to the ring. Once in the ring, Anderson had the advantage and the crowd started chanting, "DDT, DDT!" Jarrett caught Anderson with a swinging neckbreaker and pinned Arn using the ropes (I guess this was a real match in lieu of the promised Benoit/Jarrett match). Arn, Flair, and McMichael went to attack Jarrett after the "match" but Debra stood in their way to protect Jarrett. Flair pushed her and Mongo took offense. Mongo said that if Jarrett's okay with Debra, Jarrett's OK with him. Flair relented. Anderson said, "To hell with this!" and left.
- "Lord" Steven Regal and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan fought to a time-limit draw. Regal retains the WCW World Television Title.
- "Diamond" Dallas Page was to have fought Regal. DDP's music started playing and DDP didn't appear. Regal came out to new music and then Duggan came out to his music.
- Nash, Syxx, and Bischoff took over the announcers' booth during the match.
- Nash: "Please, somebody, hit Duggan in the face!"
- Nash said Page was having dinner with Hall, which was more important than the match.
- Ladies were invited to send pictures of themselves in to qualify for the Miss nWo contest at nWo Souled Out. Syxx said, "Please, I'm beggin' you, no fat chicks. No heinous broads". I really doubt that was in the script.
- While Regal and Duggan were duking it out, Nash said "Looks like two drunk guys fighting at a softball game on Labor Day".
- At the end, Duggan taped his fist, socked Regal, and was about to pin him when time ran out. Gee, Regal saves his title on time limit draws with Duggan, Anderson, and Ice Train in the last month. This is getting a little old.
- After the match, the regular announcing team came back.
- "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus pinned Jim Powers after The No Laughing Matter.
- Ray Misterio, Jr. pinned Psychosis with a victory roll after a spring off the top rope (note, not the top turnbuckle, the top rope)
- Psychosis took a bad bump early in the match when he flipped over the top rope and hit his shoulder on the edge of the apron on his way out.
- It was announced that Jushin "Thunder" Liger had defeated Ultimo Dragon at the Tokyodome. Liger won eight of Dragon's nine cruiserweight belts. Liger did not with the WCW Cruiserweight belt as the match was signed before Starrcade.
- Misterio's jock was sticking out in the back for most of the match. Hey, just calling it like I see it.
- "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan pinned Chavo Guerrero, Jr. following the Tree of Woe and a Reverse Heimlich in a squash.
- Commenting on the upcoming falls-count-anywhere match between Benoit and Sullivan in Milwaukee, Heenan said: "In Milwuakee, falls count anywhere. You can take him over to Crusher's house and beat him up on the front lawn!".
- Eddie Guerrero pinned "Das Wunderpinned" Alex Wright with a frog splash.
- Clean breaks during the match were booed by the crowd. So much for the appeal of face/face matches.
- Syxx came out during the match and set up a ladder in the walkway and perched himself on top of it. After the match, Guerrero went after him and Syxx scurried away.
- Harlem Heat def. The Amazing French-Canadians when Stevie Ray pinned Jacques Rougeau after a Heat Bomb. This followed Ouellette mistakenly cracking Rougeau with the Canadian flag.
- Two big wins for the Harlem Heat in eight days. The rumors of them going to the WWF seem to have been wrong.
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger def. Meng via submission with the Human Torture Rack, sort of.
- Luger had Meng in the Human Torture Rack and Meng kicked the referee and knocked him out. Barbarian rushed the ring to beat up on Luger. Barbarian got the initial advantage but Luger took over. The referee came to as Luger had Barbarian in the rack and the Barbarian submitted and the referee called for the bell.
- The show ended with the entire nWo, with the exception of Scott Hall, coming to the ring. Hogan went on and on about how he singlehandedly beat Piper and the Giant. The Giant stormed the ring, house afire. The Giant cleaned house with the nWo, depositing them one by one out of the ring, all ten or so of them. He lifted Nick Patrick over his head and tossed him to Scott "Flash" Norton, who kind of missed catching him (yes!). Finally, it was the Giant and Bischoff. As the Giant went for Bischoff, the Giant was gang-tackled. The nWo made the lights go out for the Giant with a replay of last week. The nWo then took over the announcers' booth. When that happened, WCW Sting came to the ring where the prone Giant was still laying in waste. He whispered some things to the Giant, pointed his bat at the nWo in the booth, dropped the bat next to the Giant, and left. The nWo sent Vincent to finish the Giant off. Vincent gingerly got into the ring and made sure the Giant was still out (hmm, can anyone else see what's coming here?). Vincent picked up the bat and gave one last smile to the nWo and the Giant reached up and got hold of the bat. A five second tug-of-war and the Giant grabbed Vincent. The Giant then gave him a vicious chokeslam, practically through the mat. The nWo rushed the ring again and the Giant held them all at bay. While this was going on, a vision of Sting was superimposed on the left side of the screen. With that, Nitro ended.
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 1/5/97
- M. Wallstreet pinned Brian Kees with a Wall Street Crash.
- This had to be a VERY old match as Wallstreet had has old music and was not wearing an nWo shirt. Gee, that's what I'm tuning in for, a month-old midcarder vs. jobber match.
- Ultimate Dragon pinned Mark Starr with an armbar step-over and rollover into the pin to retain the WCW World Cruiserweight Title.
- It's interesting that Mark Starr can get a title shot without ever winning a match.
- Jerry Lynn pinned Ciclope when Ciclope missed a dropkick off the top rope and Lynn put him into a Poughkeepsie pin-up.
- This is the second time I've seen a total jobber upset a mid-carder on Sunday {Pro}. It happened to Disco Inferno around a month ago. (Editors Note: A few days after posting this, I found out that Jerry Lynn isn't a total jobber as he his really the masked wrestler J.L. without the mask.
- "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko pinned Ray Misterio, Jr. using the second rope for leverage after a powerbomb.
- Cruise needled Zbyszko with Scott Hall's comments about him. It is looking more and more like Zbyszko will come out of retirement to fight Scott Hall.
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 1/4/97
- "Lionheart" Chris Jericho pinned Jim Richland following a missile drop kick from the top rope right on the noggin.
- nWo Souled Out pay-per-view will be Saturday, January 25th from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It will feature:
- "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan vs. The Giant for the WCW World Heavyweight Title.
- Eddie Guerrero vs. Syxx for the WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title.
- The Outsiders vs. The Steiner Brothers for the WCW Tag Team Titles.
- "Lionheart" Chris Jericho vs. Masa Hiro Chano.
- Marcus Bagwell vs. Scotty Riggs (this wasn't announced on the show...I saw this on MiCasa's News Glean)
- "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson pinned Chavo Guerrero, Jr. following a DDT.
- Congratulations to Arn Anderson for having the Valvoline Power Pin of the Week.
- During the match, Dusty Rhodes noted: "I'm so pretty, I should've been a girl". Seems like another Golddust reference to me.
- In the post-match interview, Anderson said that Woman is the seed for all of the Horsemen's problems. He also said that as long as Flair is on the sidelines, Flair does not get a vote in Horseman matters. Therefore, the fact that Flair thinks Jarrett should be a Horseman is meaningless.
- Eddie Guerrero and "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko wrestled to a double-countout. Guerrero retains the U.S. Heavyweight Title.
- During this match, I noticed how many empty seats were in the arena.
- Masa Hiro Chono made Mark Starr submit with the STF.
- The STF is a combination ankle lock and crossface while the victim is face down on the mat.
- As a member of the nWo was wrestling, the Masked Referee was the referee, but he didn't really come into play.
- The ending of a Madusa/Hokuto double-countout since Starrcade was replayed. In an interview, Madusa vowed to bring the women's title back from Japan on her upcoming tour.
- "Big" Bubba Rogers pinned J.L. following a Bubba Slam.
- Again, the Masked Referee was the referee, but he didn't really come into play.
- At one point when Bubba and J.L. were outside the ring, Bubba grabbed a bicycle and used it to choke J.L. I have no idea what a bicycle was doing there.
- The card for Clash of the Champions was announced:
- "The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan in a "falls count anywhere" match.
- The Amazing French-Canadians vs. The Steiner Brothers.
- "Lord" Steven Regal vs. Ray Misterio, Jr. for the WCW World Television Title.
- Konan, Psychosis, and Juventud Guerrera vs. La Parka, Chavo Guerrero Jr., and Super Calo.
- Public Enemy def. The Armstrong Brothers when Rocco Rock pinned Scott Armstrong following a drive-by.
- The Armstrong Brothers were wrestling as heels. The wind must be blowing in a different direction.
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger made "Mean" Mike Enos submit with the Human Torture Rack. *yawn*
- This match made The Armstrong Brothers exciting by comparison.
- "Lord" Steven Regal and Ice Train wrestled to a time-limit draw. Regal retains the WCW World Television Title.
- Ice Train had Regal in a pinning predicament after a big splash when time ran out.
- I've got to say, Regal's ring entrance just cracks me up. He looks so utterly disgusted with everyone and everything.
