This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 03/10/97
- The show opened with Hogan and Rodman on tape in a short promo.
- For the show, it was at the La Vela nightclub in Panama City, FL and the ring is floating in the middle of a pool.
- Piper and his band of merry jobbers showed up in a white limo. If you watch carefully, you notice the "boxer" holding the door open for Piper exactly as you would expect a personal lackey to do.
- Jeff Jarrett and Steve "Mongo" McMichael def. High Voltage when Mongo pinned Rage after a tombstone piledriver.
- Zbyszko looking at Debra: "We have a lot of talent here...and a lot of wrestlers."
- Crowd was chanting "We want Flair!"
- Piper and his team of jobbers were introduced and came to the ring. Piper got all over Howard Stern for not allowing Piper on his show. (This is probably a work with Stern.) Piper said that when he was in the WWF, he beat the hell out of Golddust. (Uh oh! WCW's going to get in trouble.) Piper said damn the critics, he's keeping his team. Then Flair's music started playing and the Four Horsemen came out. Arn said to Piper's guys that they have a lot of heart, but this is a job for professionals. "When someone breaks into your house, you don't squirt them with a garden hose, you pick something up and bash them over the head with it." Flair said Piper has broken the rule they all live by: "You never overmatch yourself". Flair offered the Horsemen to Piper. Piper said his "family" would watch his back and he would be proud to fight with the Horsemen on his side. Yes!! WCW had the brains to undo quite possibly the worst angle in wrestling history before it was too late! Well, second worst, behind Robocop. Well, third worst, behind Papa Shongo making the Ultimate Warrior throw up. Well, fourth worst behind...well, you get the idea.
- Prince Iaukea pinned "Squire" Dave Taylor when Taylor fell backwards as he was attempting to slam Iaukea.
- During the match, the nWo humvee limo arrived. As they were making their way in, all of a sudden Michael Wallstreet was down and out on the pavement, ala Bubba Rogers. No one saw who did it.
- Eddie Guerrero pinned Jim "Juice" Powers after pulling Powers into a skull session with Teddy Long to retain the WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title.
- Dean Malenko joined the broadcasting team for the match. He said Eddie Guerrero is jealous of him.
- In the post match interview, Guerrero got angry with Okerlund.
- "Diamond" Dallas Page pinned Sgt. Craig "Pit Bull" Pittmann following a, Bang!, diamond cutter coming out of the corner.
- During the post-match interview, the lights and the wireless microphone went out. At first, I thought it was an angle and Page would be attacked. However, it actually seemed to be a problem as they went to commercial without any resolution. Man, ain't live TV great?!
- I can't believe no one has been thrown into the pool yet.
- After commercial, they came back to Page and Okerlund and the interview continued.
- Ray Misterio, Jr. pinned Galaxy with a head scissors and hurricarana from the top rope.
- John Sencio, MTV VJ (BFD) was brought out to introduce Miss Monday Nitro, Pamela Rogers. Hey, now!
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger, Giant, & The Steiner Brothers def. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, Road Block, and The Amazing French-Canadians when Giant pinned Road Block after a choke slam.
- The match included Scott Steiner giving Road Block a belly-to-back suplex.
- My girlfriend thinks the Giant's getting fat.
- Women started screaming with glee when Lex Luger flexed his pecs. Fortunately, my girlfriend was focused on her knitting on the time.
- The Ultimate Dragon pinned Juventud Guerrera with a tiger suplex into a bridge.
- Scotty "What The Hell Was I Thinking What I Got An American Males Tattoo?" Riggs defeated "Lionheart" Chris Jericho via DQ when Marcus "Buff" Bagwell interfered and started whipping Riggs when Riggs was pinning Jericho after delivering a flying forearm.
- Given that the announcers were saying what a great scientific match it was going to be, I was predicting that Jericho would be turning heel in the match (especially if they shook hands in the middle of the match). Rather, Jericho helped Riggs fight off Bagwell after Bagwell interfered. This is why I don't make predictions before the pay-per-views. I'm usually wrong.
- "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan and Hardbody Henderson went to a double countout when Sullivan took Henderson down to the beach and beat him up. The beating ended with Henderson being thrown in the pool and the crowd went nuts.
- Randy "Pee Wee" Anderson was refereeing again.
- Miss Jacqueline would be an incredible phenomenon if she had interview skills.
- Sullivan said he was depending on the Horsemen to succeed at Uncensored: "No excuses!"
- nWo came out. A clip with Rodman and Hogan was played. They gave Sting his colors. He just stood there expressionless. Nash gave the Steiners some advice, "Next time, get the loss damage waiver!" Savage furthered the goofy angle of refusing to say "Diamond" Dallas Page's name. Hogan said nWo is "Tits!". That was odd.
- The match event between Public Enemy and Harlem Heat went about five seconds before time ran out and the show ended.
- In the pre-match interview, Johnny Grunge correctly pointed out that Ric Flair's been running around like he's having an epileptic fit.
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 03/09/97
- Konan pinned Super Calo after a whack on the noggin with Jimmy Hart's megaphone.
- Dusty came out and blantantly said, "I think Piper's made the wrong decision in picking his team". I think it is highly likely that Piper's team will undergo some drastic changes on Nitro.
- Renegade and "Desperado" Joe Gomez def. Sgts. Parker and Pittman when Gomez pinned Parker after a Sidewalk Slam.
- Steve "Mongo" McMichael pinned Johnny Swinger following a bulldog.
- "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan pinned Rex King after punching him with a taped fist.
- Duggan started the match with a "USA" chant. So where's Rex King from...Antarctica?
- Duggan taped his fist in full view of the referee. Maybe next week, he'll pull out a gun and still not get disqualified.
- Jeff Jarrett made Jim "Juice" Powers submit with a Figure-Four Leglock.
- Debra McMichael came out to watch Jarrett wrestle but Mongo came out and dragged her (figuratively) back to the locker room.
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 03/08/97
- "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan pinned "Squire" Dave Taylor after a punch in the face with a taped fist.
- Last time I checked my rulebook, a closed fist wasn't legal, much less a taped closed fist.
- The announcers made it a point to say Bischoff has been suspended, not fired. Seems like Ted Turner is going to "fire" him after all. (After Bischoff is "fired", he will still be an executive vice president. He'll just be behind the scenes.)
- Road Block pinned Larry Santo following a Dead End Drop.
- Ice Train pinned Buddy Lee Parker with a Train Wreck.
- You get the impression Ice Train really likes his job. He comes to the ring with a genuine smile on his face.
- A recurring theme in interviews with other wrestlers is how much they respect Buddy Lee Parker. He is a trainer at the Power Plant and seems to have universal respect from the guys in WCW.
- Mortis (Chris Canyon) and his manager, James VanDeBurg, were interviewed.
- VanDeBurg was kind enough to point out that Glacier means a "slow moving block of ice".
- While VanDeBurg is talking about how dangerous Mortis is, having learned his craft in bloodsport in Southeast Asia, Mortis is behind him mugging and goofing like a buffoon. It really ruined the angle.
- VanDeBurg comes off very effeminate. Mortis, while not effeminate, has a voice that sounds like Charles Nelson Reilly.
- Prince Iaukea pinned Super Calo with a flying body press from the top turnbuckle to retain the WCW World Television Championship.
- The announcers kept saying Piper may have made a mistake in picking his team. Supposedly, WCW is very unhappy with this angle Piper put together so the announcers may be setting the stage to change it around on Nitro.
- Glacier pinned J.L. following a standing side kick.
- Mortis and VanDeBurg came out and watched the match but did not get involved.
- Harlem Heat def. "Hardwork" Bobby Walker and Jim "Juice" Powers when Booker T. pinned Powers after The Big Apple.
- Dusty said "Sister Sherri always looks like she's wearin' her mama's high heels and her little sister's dress".
- "Diamond" Dallas Page pinned Billy Kidman following a Diamond Cutter delivered from a fireman's carry.
- A video montage of Miss Jacqueline was shown. Nice to know she benches and squats more than I do.
- "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan pinned Tim Cheeks following The Tree of Woe and a Reverse Heimlich.
- Miss Jacqueline got to do her thing to Cheeks twice outside the ring. The crowd was chanting "Jackie! Jackie!". She is going over big in a hurry.
- Dusty said: "I'd go to bed with a claw hammer if I woke up with her in the morning".
- As Jacqueline was about to nail Cheeks, Dusty imitated her saying, "You forgot the loaf of bread?!"
- Public Enemy def. Galaxy and La Parka when Johnny Grunge pinned Galaxy after powerbombing him from the second turnbuckle through a table in the center of the ring.
- Mark Curtis, the referee, saw the entire thing and did not disqualify Public Enemy but, instead, counted the pinfall. Whoever booked that finish should be fired!
- Lex Luger racked Maxx.
- Boy, you just can't get enough of seeing Lex rack jobbers, can you?
- The rules for Uncensored were explained. Three teams of four. First round, one man from each team for five minutes. Second, third, and fourth round, add one more from each team for two minutes. The team with the last man standing wins. If it is someone from WCW, the nWo has to give all the belts back that night and cannot wrestle at a WCW-sanctioned event for 36 months. If the nWo wins, they can wrestle for any WCW title at any WCW event at any time. If Piper's team wins, Piper gets a cage match with Hogan sometime in the near future.
- Somehow, I don't think the WCW is going to win this one.
- The announcers mentioned that the "boxer" is Piper's bodyguard. From what I've read, he's more like a personal lackey.
- They replayed the bit with Bischoff getting suspended. You can see Bischoff mouthing Dr. Harvey Schiller's lines to him.
