This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 03/24/97
- They've redone the opening credits to Nitro. They got rid of the clips of Hogan and Sting and replaced them with clips of the Giant.
- Larry "The Axe" Hennig (Curt's father) was in the crowd and pointed out. Hmm, I think Curt's coming to WCW. I think they are saving the "who's been dropping the nWo guys" angle for him. If he doesn't show, someone else will eventually get credit or they'll drop the angle entirely.
- "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko made Konan submit with the Texas Cloverleaf to retain the WCW U.S Heavyweight Title.
- Do all gangsta's grab their crotches on the way to the ring? Just wondering.
- It was announced that due to nWo's new ability to challenge for any title, anywhere, "Macho Man" Randy Savage would be fighting Prince Iaukea for the TV title later in the program.
- Malenko was really over with the crowd. He got a pop for every move. Konan got the exact opposite reaction from the crowd with each successful move.
- The announcing team stated that Arn Anderson was attacked after Nitro last week. Details were sketchy.
- The announcers implied and Malenko, in the post-match interview, stated outright that Eddie Guerrero and the nWo are in cahoots.
- Mortis pinned Jerry Flynn following a flatliner (a Samoan Drop from the second turnbuckle).
- Everyone's been talking about this great finisher that Mortis has. I hope that wasn't it because it was pretty lame.
- Jerry Flynn is an excellent worker.
- La Parka pinned Juventud Guerrera following a spinning body attack from the top turnbuckle.
- La Parka came to the ring wearing a new bullfighter outfit. Hey, maybe it's Tito Santana under the mask! :-)
- The announcers made a point of mentioning Scott Hall was not at the arena tonight and they didn't know why. One of the rumors pages said he might be out for a while but they didn't say why.
- La Parka was really animated during this match. Dancing around and hootin' and hollerin'. Stuff he normally doesn't do. It did physically seem like the same guy. Must have been drunk.
- There were a number of great dives out of the ring in this match. Too bad Ciclope wasn't one of the combatants so we could see him really hurt himself.
- Okerlund interviews the (Ein)Steiners. * yawn *
- In a huge upset, High Voltage def. Public Enemy when Kaos pinned Johnny Grunge after Jeff Jarrett and Debra "Queen of the WCW" McMichael came to the ring and Jarrett nailed Grunge with the Haliburton.
- For those of you who might be interested, High Voltage is from Anchorage, AK.
- Rage took a table shot toward the end of the match. This may have been the result of the crowd chanting, "Table, Table, Table!"
- After the match, Mongo came out and he was pissed at Jarrett and Debra.
- Okerlund interviewed Giant and Luger. Luger looked and acted liked he'd been out drinking with La Parka.
- Psychosis pinned Super Calo following a guillotine leg drop from the top turnbuckle.
- In another upset, "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus pinned "Crippler" Chris Benoit following a No Laughing Matter after Konan knocked Benoit off the top turnbuckle.
- After the match, Konan and Kevin Sullivan did a mudhole stomp on Benoit. Woman wasn't there as she was supposedly at the hospital with Arn Anderson and his wife.
- Dean Malenko, who is defending his title against Benoit at Spring Stampede, tried to make the save but was knocked out.
- Ric Flair ran in and cleaned house. He drove everyone nuts or, more accurately, drove everyone'S nuts!
- After Flair cleared the ring of the Dungeon of Doom, Benoit and Malenko stared each other down.
- Harlem Heat def. The Faces of Fear when Booker T. pinned Meng with a handful of tights after a Harlem Sidekick and Sister Sherri took a bump.
- Quick quiz! What's the size order of Harlem Heat from biggest to smallest. Your guess is Stevie Ray, then Booker T.? Well, that's close. More accurately, it's Stevie Ray, Sister Sherri, and then Booker T. Man, she's huge! And not in a good way like Miss Jacqueline.
- Okerlund interviewed Benoit and Flair. Benoit said Sullivan beat up Anderson in his hotel room after Nitro last week. Benoit said Anderson made the biggest mistake of his career telling everyone he was going in for surgery. (Where is this angle going?) Flair on Piper: "We all got wives, we all got kids. Some of us got more wives..." Pretty funny as Flair's been married three times.
- Madusa pinned Malia Hosaka (Oh, my!) with a German Suplex and a bridge.
- So, if Madusa were to go up to the top of Pike's Peak, would there be any danger of her breast implants exploding?
- "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan pinned Renegade after a sock in the mush with a taped fist.
- You know, if earlier today someone had said, "Hacksaw Duggan is wrestling on Nitro tonight and you're going to hope he wins" I wouldn't have believed them, but they would have been right.
- Before the match, Duggan and Renegade shook hands and Duggan take the roll of tape out of his tights (the first of two) and threw it into the crowd.
- A handshake before the match. You can see this heel turn coming a mile away.
- Would you would to touch that tape after it's been in Duggan's tights?
- Ironically, Duggan no-sold Renegade's heel turn. Usually, at the very least, wrestlers win matches as they turn heel. Renegade's such a jobber they didn't even give him that.
- Mike Tenay pointed out that Renegade is a former WCW TV Champion. I can't believe they acknowledge that unless they are doing it to embarass Hogan for the terrible job he did booking in 1995.
- Duggan had a second roll of tape in his tights. How do you explain that?
- You know, given how out of shape Duggan is and how much he sweats, that second roll of tape must have been pretty ripe when he pulled it out.
- The (Ein)Steiner Brothers def. The Amazing French-Canadians when Rick pinned Carl "Ahoy, Matey!" Oulette after Rougeau accidentally nailed Oulette with Col. Parker's boot.
- Prince Iaukea and Randy "Macho Man" Savage were a no-contest when both "Diamond" Dallas Page and the nWo rushed the ring. Iaukea retains the TV title.
- When the nWo (Nash, DiBiase, Savage, Syxx, Vincent, Nick Patrick) came to the ring, Kevin Nash leaned into the camera and said, "Right back at you, HBK" HBK is the Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels. Oh, boy, Nash is going to be in trouble for doing that.
- Savage had the match cleanly won with a flying elbow smash but picked Iaukea up to administer more punishment. This gave Page time to interfere.
- After the match, Page and Iaukea were both knocked out, jackknifed, and spray-painted and the show ended with them laid out. It was a flashback to Nitro of six months ago except now Savage is the painter rather than the paintee.
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 03/23/97
- La Parka pinned J.L. after hitting him with a flying twist off the top turnbuckle.
- The group of teenaged girls from "last week's" show (they were filmed on the same night) were moved up front this week (Hey, now!). Good thing neither Tatanka nor Jerry Lawler wrestle for WCW.
- After La Parka got kicked in the crotch, Zbyszko said, "He kicked him in the tights". Dusty added, "Right in the center of the tights!"
- The Amazing French-Canadians def. the Southern Posse when Carl Oulette pinned the hairy guy in the Posse after a Flip, Flop, and a Fly.
- While the AFC were singing the Canadian National Anthem, the guy doing the music changed it to the Star Spangled Banner. The announcers didn't seem to notice it.
- "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan pinned the Cheetah Kid following the Tree of Woe and a Reverse Heimlich.
- Jacqueline, as usual, laid waste to Sullivan's opponent outside the ring.
- Jacqueline had one short skirt on.
- The Faces of Fear def. High Voltage when Barbarian pinned Rage after Meng back body dropped Rage into a Barbarian powerbomb.
- The Ultimate Dragon pinned "Das Wunderpinned" Alex Wright with a one arm rollover.
- The teenage girls were very disappointed with the outcome of this match.
- Dusty Rhodes referred to Sonny Ono as a "Snake in the rice paddy".
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 03/22/97
- Public Enemy def. Ace Darling and Devon Storm when Johnny Grunge pinned Storm after powerbombing him from the second turnbuckle through a table right in the center of the ring, right in front of the referee.
- Public Enemy gave a great post-match interview. Repeatedly, one of the them would say something complimentary about the Horsemen and then they'd both turn to the camera and in unison say "Not!"
- "The Man of 1,000 Holds" , U.S. Heavyweight Champion Dean Malenko made Galaxy submit with the Texas Cloverleaf.
- The match included Malenko standing on the apron and suplexing Galaxy from the ring onto the floor. Haven't seen that move for a few months.
- Immediately clamping on the Texas Cloverleaf, Malenko gave Galaxy a frog splash and then said into the camera "Eddie Guerrero, pay attention!"
- The Steiner Brothers def. High Voltage when Rick Steiner pinned Kaos after a Steiner Bulldog.
- From body language and other incidents, it seems pretty obvious that Scott Steiner is not a very friendly person. He doesn't make a very good face.
- Malea Hosaka pinned Lelani Kai following a headscissor takeover.
- For you youngsters out there, Lelani Kai defeated Wendi Richter to win the WWF Women's championship way back in the early 1980s. Richter won it back from her and eventually lost it back to the Fabulous Moolah.
- Melea Hosaka is very attractive. Dusty commented on how he liked her little drawers.
- Lelani has definitely aged and gained significant weight. She looked like she was on the verge of crying before the match started.
- At one point, Dusty accidentally used an expletive and got bleeped.
- After the match, Luna Vachon rushed the ring and cleaned house. The bottoms of her tights were a thong on top of see through pantyhose. Dusty commented, "Talkin' about drawers, she ain't got much!"
- Man, Luna gives some interview! After her house cleaning, she was with Lee Marshall and she sounded like Linda Blair in The Exorcist. I was waiting for her head to spin around.
- Rick Fuller pinned Johnny Swinger following a spinwheel kick.
- Watching this match, I was trying to come up with a good reason to watch a jobber vs. jobber match. I actually came up with one. You get a chance to see a new finisher. Lord knows Fuller won't get a chance to use it on anyone else in a televised match.
- Prince Iaukea pinned Ciclope with a crossbody block from the top turnbuckle to retain the WCW World Television Title.
- Once again, Ciclope took another bad bump outside the ring. Iaukea was standing on the floor and Ciclope jumped out to give him a flying head scissors. Iaukea didn't hold on to Ciclope's legs and Ciclope crashed on his back on the floor.
- The crack announcing team of Rhodes and Schiavone thought Ciclope was La Parka and kept calling him that throughout the match. You know, for a title match, you'd think they'd at least know the challenger's name.
- Scotty Riggs pinned The Renegade with a roll up using the ropes for leverage.
- Renegade had tried the same thing earlier on Riggs but was caught by the referee. Oh, no! I hope they are not planning a heel turn for Renegade!! Whatever will I do? ;-)
- "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan pinned Johnny Boone following the Tree of Woe and a Reverse Heimlich.
- As you would expect, Jacqueline laid waste to Boone outside AND inside the ring. At one point, Sullivan and Jacqueline took him into the crowd and she beat him with a garbage can. During this two minute exchange, Sullivan was not disqualified nor was there a double count-out.
- Johnny Boone is best known for the huge upset win he got over Disco Inferno on WCW Sunday {Pro} late last year. No stranger to the pay window, that Johnny Boone.
- Giant pinned Road Block following a chokeslam.
- Other that the chokeslam, the Giant only had one other serious offensive move during the match. Of course, it just happened to be a missile dropkick from the top turnbuckle. Yikes! Rumor has it Giant has been practicing a moonsault at the WCW Power Plant. Can you imagine?!
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger racked Jim "Juice" Powers.
- Boy, you just can't get enough of Lex racking jobbers, can you?
- Harlem Heat defeated The Faces of Fear via DQ when "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus rushed the ring when HH had FoF in a pinning predicament.
- Luger and Giant made the save on the Harlem Heat after Morrus came in.
