This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 05/05/97
- Show opens with Flair, Piper, and Greene. Schiavone asks Piper to answer for why he didn't immediately come to Flair's aid last week. (It is turning into an angle, after all). Two "Tradition Bites" banners unrolled and the gleesome threesome stormed off. Credits roll. Flair, Piper, and Greene are in the ring. Flyers come down from the ceiling again (well, at least the flyers coming down cost less than Sting). J.J. Dillon shows up to give Piper the news that the nWo will, in fact, get 75% of the gate at Slamboree and Piper will be in breach of contract and let the WCW down if he doesn't show. Flair grabs the mike and says "I don't know about Hall and Nash, but Syxx, you're mine!" Greene grabs the mike but gets cut off by Public Enemy's music. Flair, Piper, and Greene legit wouldn't leave but finally left.
- "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus and Konnan def. Public Enemy when Morrus pinned Rocco Rock after superplexing Rock on top of Konnan who was laid across a table in the ring.
- Public Enemy showed up with two tables. Konnan and Morrus brought one.
- Public Enemy attempted to sandwich Konnan between two tables. Hart pulled Konnan out at the last second and Grunge took a bad header. Grunge was out for the rest of the match. At first I thought it might be legit, but the way the ending came together convinced me otherwise.
- The ending seems to be a set up for Konnan turning on Morrus at Slamboree.
- Syxx made Rey Misterio, Jr. submit to the Buzzkiller after Scott Hall gave Misterio an nWo drop (Razor's Edge) behind the referee's back. Syxx retains the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship.
- J.J. Dillon and Nick Patrick came to the ring when Syxx wouldn't break the hold. The rest of the nWo came to the ring. Patrick got pitched from the ring and Dillon threatened to reverse the decision. Bischoff said Dillon had no "stroke". (At least no one was trying to promote their line of "Bite Me!" t-shirts.) Nash and Syxx got in Dillon's face with references to their time in the WWF (for all you smart marks out there).
- Oh no! It's Hogan and Bischoff. Hogan decided to show up tonight. Damn! And, unfortunately, I stand corrected. Bischoff is wearing his new "Bite Me" t-shirt. Hogan called Sting out. Yeah, this has as much chance happening as a clean finish in a Steiner Brothers match on Nitro.
- Schiavone announced that Luger was injured "at the hands of the nWo" in Japan but Luger will still be wrestling along with the Giant against Harlem Heat in tonight's main event.
- Meng and "Lord" Steven Regal went to a non-finish when Regal attacked Sullivan outside the ring.
- Meng got the nervehold on Regal outside the ring after the match and wouldn't let go. It looks like Meng's new personality is the "uncontrollable maniac".
- A "Diamond" Dallas Page promo was shown. Not bad. Too bad I tuned in to see wrestling and not promos. Now a live interview with Okerlund, DDP, and Kimberly. Wow, TOO BAD I tuned in to see wrestling and not promos. Gadzooks, Okerlund really is terrible. Macho and Elizabeth appear in the stands. They jaw. Not bad. Too bad I've seen this bit at least two times already. Wow, TOO BAD I tuned in to see wrestling and not promos.
- Jeff Jarrett, with Debra, made Alex Wright submit to the figure-four leglock in a very quick match.
- Hmm, a fan grabbed Alex Wright on his way to the ring. Alex was not pleased.
- Uh, oh, Zbyszko violated Turner Broadcasting policy and said "Foreign object".
- Alex wrestled like a heel and the announcers commented on that fact. There is a rumored heel turn coming for Alex.
- You know, I understand that an hour long show means the matches have to be shorter. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't spending so much time on the promos.
- Now, a car racing promo for Mark Martin who is making a big announcement on Nitro in two weeks. Does anyone care?
- Glacier pinned Lizmark, Jr. after a cryonic kick.
- You know, maybe short matches aren't all bad.
- Mortis attacked Glacier after the mach. Glacier was getting the better of Mortis until the wrestler formerly known as Adam Bomb jumped Glacier from behind. Then Mortis beat Glacier with his stick with the soft, puffy skull on the end. What's next...the soft cushions and the comfy chair?
- Luger was a no-show and the Giant came to the ring and announced his partner, "Diamond" Dallas Page. As Page went to the ring, Macho Man got in his way. Hogan jumped Page from behind and laid a world of hurting on him as Savage manhandled Kimberly. The rest of the nWo (including M. Wallstreet who was supposedly no longer in the nWo) stormed the ring fists-a-flyin' and beat on the Giant and Harlem Heat. Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, and Kevin Greene stormed the ring, got a momentary advantage, but were beaten for their efforts. (Well, Greene wasn't beat up. He was just tossed out of the ring because he couldn't sell a life preserver to a drowning man.) The show ended as the beatings continued and Hogan and Savage joked into the microphone.
- I liked the ending. It was like last Summer all over again.
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 05/04/97
- Konan pinned Villano IV following the 187.
- In announcing the card for Slamboree, it was noted that the "newly crowned" women's champ would be defending her title in a match pitting Madusa against Luna Vachon. They didn't exactly make it clear who now holds it, but I've read elsewhere it is Madusa (the numerous times they've accidentally referred to her as the champion in the last few months is another hint she was going to win it). Also, some sites are reporting that Ric Flair got his way and the Slamboree main event has been changed from Flair/Piper/Greene vs. Hall/Nash/Syxx to Flair/Greene vs. Hall/Nash with Piper/Syxx as an undercard match although the Slamboree promos are not saying that yet.
- Kevin Sullivan (with Jacqueline's help) pinned Doc Dean following The Tree of Woe and a Reverse Heimlich.
- Note that Doc Dean was one of Jacqueline's original victims on Nitro when she first came to WCW. Jobber or not, I'm guessing a lot of wrestlers do not wish to be humiliated by getting whallopped by Jacqueline. For those of you who don't know, Disco Inferno was fired by Bischoff a few months ago after a backstage argument with head booker Kevin Sullivan at Nitro for refusing to job to Jacqueline.
- Prince Iaukea pinned Adrian Byrd following a flying body press from the top turnbuckle.
- For some reason, Adrian Byrd was really over with the crowd.
- Scratch my previous comment. Scott Hudson just announced that Madusa won the belt two days ago from Akira Hokuto in Japan. Zbyszko wondered if "Heavyweight" is a compliment for women.
- "Crippler" Chris Benoit made Bunkhouse Buck submit with a Crippler Crossface in a very quick match.
- Buck knocked down the cameraman on the way to the ring again.
- Benoit came out to his own music rather than Horseman music today. I like his music a little better.
- Jeff Jarrett made Sgt. Craig "Pit Bull" Pittmann submit with a figure-four leglock.
- Congratulations to Pittmann for being the first person in WCW to be smart enough to clobber Jeff Jarrett while Jarrett was strutting.
- Harlem Heat def. The Amazing French-Canadians when Stevie Ray pinned Carl Ouelette after Booker T. superkicked Ouelette after attempted interference by Colonel Parker backfired.
- What is up with referee Mark Curtis mirroring the match as it goes?
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 05/03/97
WCW Saturday Night was unexpectedly pre-empted by auto racing this week
