This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 06/02/97
- Show starts live from Dayton, OH, with Hall and Syxx in the ring. "Hey, Six Pack, smell that? It's us, 'cause we're the stuff!" Hall claims the nWo is the reason wrestling is so popular. Hall says they punked Greene, Flair, and Piper at Slamboree and Hall (thinking Flair was in Charlotte) called Flair out. J.J. Dillon came running out and told Hall that Flair was on his way to the arena and Hall had to wrestle him tonight, as he just offered a verbal contract, or he would have to leave the WCW Tag Team Belts on Dillon's desk tonight. Hall said Flair should get his wrinkled butt on down here.
- Great start tonight, but where's Kevin Nash?
- I would guess that the main event tonight is a direct result of Raw defeating Nitro in the 9:45 - 10:00 slot last week.
- Glacier pinned Alex Wright following a cryonic kick.
- Alex Wright's dancing as a heel is a riot. I was laughing out loud. He even does it during the match. My girlfriend pointed out that Alex Wright seems to have taken over Disco Inferno's role. I don't quite agree as Disco Inferno never took himself as seriously as Alex Wright does.
- Glacier's been borrowing some of Ric Flair's hair bleach.
- Vandenburg came to the ring with Glacier's helmet after the match. Mortis and Wrath came out of separate places in the crowd and began to double team Glacier. When Alex Wright came to, he wanted a place of Glacier. He got a few kicks in and was holding Glacier for Mortis to kick him and guess what happened? Glacier ducked and Alex Wright went down faster than a flight attendant in Frank Gifford's hotel room. Eventually, Glacier fought Mortis and Wrath off and Nitro went to commercial.
- Buff Bagwell pinned "Desperado" Joe Gomez following the Buff Blockbuster.
- Bagwell got some help from Scott Norton outside the ring during the match.
- The best thing I can say about this match is that there was no run in by the Renegade afterwards.
- Mike Tenay did a sell job on Ernest Miller and then showed clips of Roddy Piper's new movie, Swept Away. And you all know how much I love crossovers. As for Ernest Miller, Ron Bridges sends in the following:
I'd just like to share some info with you that you may not know about. Ernest Miller has already trained to become a wrestler, and two weeks ago on World Wide Wrestling (TV syndication showing OLD matches), Ernest Miller beat Disco Inferno in a near squash. The match must have taken place before Disco Inferno got fired. Actually, he looked pretty damn good, for he was using Syxx-style wrestling; martial arts combined with high-risk moves, and he wrestled like a five-year veteran! So he's not a newcomer in the least bit. Therefore, inform all readers of your web page about this info, and they can e-mail me if they have concerns, or just wanna shoot the bull.
- Prince Iaukea pinned "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus with a simple roll up in less than a minute.
- Morrus got about three steps out of the entranceway for the match and got cracked over the head by Konnan with a broom. Dazed and confused, well, more than usual, anyway, he continued to the ring. The pre match attack enabled Iaukea to score the quick and easy win.
- J.J. Dillon announced that if the Steiners win their match tonight, they will be the number one contenders for the tag team titles. Harlem Heat and Sherri stormed out to say every action causes a reaction. Larry Zbyszko noted the Sherri's face is her chaperone.
- Short feature on DDP about how people didn't believe in him and he lost his first 79 matches. Now he's a main eventer. Not a great promo, but not bad, either.
- Masa Hiro Chono and The Great Muta def. The Steiner Brothers when Muta pinned Rick Steiner with a simple leg hook after Harlem Heat "chaired a meeting" with Rick Steiner.
- Believe it or not, Scott Steiner actually sold some of his opponents' moves tonight.
- After the match, J.J. Dillon confronted the Harlem Heat about their actions and said the match would be reviewed. Also, how Harlem Heat do later in the show would have an effect. Sherri then went into a screaming fit.
- Okerlund introduced Flair as the 13-time W.C.W. champion again. And, to insult our intelligence a little further, Okerlund introduced Flair Michael Buffer-style. About Hall, Flair said, "I am going to stomp a mudhole in your toothpick-chewing, white, honky, ass!!" Schiavone reminded us that this will be a pay-per-view quality main event. Boy, WCW really does not want to lose the last fifteen minute slot again this week.
- "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko made M. Wallstreet submit to the Texas Cloverleaf to retain the WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title.
- In a weird ending, Jarrett (accompanied by Debra) came to ringside and hooked Malenko's ankle as he was suplexing Wallstreet. It looked like Wallstreet got the three count but Nick Patrick seemed a little confused and said it was only a two-count. Malenko then hooked the Texas Cloverleaf on Wallstreet and Patrick sort of got in the way of Wallstreet reaching the ropes and Wallstreet tapped out.
- End result of all this...Jarrett will get a rematch with Malenko for the U.S. Title on Nitro next week.
- Mongo came out and told Jarrett said this kind of stuff should be cleared with one's partner. Jarrett said he is on his own and walked off and said "Let's go, Debra". Mongo kept Debra with him and talked trash about Kevin Greene.
- In a huge upset, Ciclope and Damien def. Harlem Heat when Damien pinned Booker T. following a (really lame) splash from the top turnbuckle after the Steiners chaired a meeting with Booker T.
- In the grand Ciclope "bad bump" tradition, Ciclope came very close to legitimately hurting himself again towards the end of the match when his leg got stuck between the edge of the canvas and the top of the apron. Man, that guy must slip on the soap in the bathtub.
- I thought this was really odd booking. I would think that if someone was going to get a big upset win over Harlem Heat, albeit a screw job, you'd give it to a jobber team that pairs regularly so that they could use it as a "feather in their cap", like Prince Iaukea's TV title reign. Better candidates might have been the High Voltage, the Armstrong Brothers, or ever Jim Powers and Hardwork Walker.
- "Crippler" Chris Benoit made The Barbarian submit with the Crippler Crossface following a flying headbutt from the top turnbuckle.
- Benoit came out alone tonight. Woman must be on sabbatical with her husband.
- Oddly enough, Benoit came out to Horseman music tonight.
- One particularly vicious move by Barbarian was a belly-to-belly suplex over the head from the top turnbuckle practically across the entire ring diagonally.
- The Barbarian jobbing via submission? Yup, the rumors may be true. Barbarian's probably going to the WWF.
- So, after the match, Hart is now dragging out the angle of "getting to Sullivan" ad infinitum. Now, tonight's victory over Barbarian wasn't enough. In addition to never putting his hands on Hart again, Benoit must face Meng in a rematch Death Match at the Bash and fulfill an as yet unnamed requirement to get to Sullivan. This "gauntlet" thing to get to Sullivan is pretty lame considering they've already fought all over the country. It's now gotten to the point where Sullivan is starting to hold Benoit back.
- "Nature Boy" Ric Flair def. Scott Hall via DQ when Randy Anderson called for the bell as Hall and Syxx were double teaming Flair in the ring.
- Crappy ending for a good match.
- The nice thing about Flair being a face is that the Flair Flop actually works. Tonight, Ric did the Flair Flop into a choke on Syxx on the apron.
- Schiavone kept making a big deal about how Piper couldn't help Flair tonight because he was making a movie. Hmm, where's this going?
- Eventually, Mongo came running out with the Haliburton to make the save. Jarrett came out afterwards, but by then the carnage had stopped. I was half expecting something to happen between Mongo and Jarrett at that point since they'd just broken up as a team, but no dice.
- The nWo music started with Macho Man dragging Okerlund to the ring under the threat of bodily harm. It took forever for them to get there. Nitro must have run short tonight. Once in the ring, Savage said he was the greatest wrestler ever. When Okerlund begged to differ, Savage physically threatened him. Dillon came to the ring and told Savage neither he, nor anyone else, is ever to put their hands on a WCW announcer again. Dillon told Savage he is personally disappointed in him. Instead of facing Page man-to-man, Savage is hiding behind a woman. With that, Savage decked Dillon and started mudholing him. Bischoff and WCW security came out and had to pull Savage off of Dillon. When it was all over, Bischoff's demeanor changed and he grabbed the mic and told Dillon that he started it. With that, Nitro ended.
- Seeing this made me really wonder where Kevin Nash was tonight. He has always been the one portrayed as having the most hate for WCW, vowing to fight WCW until "his dying breath". He would have been better than Savage in this angle, imho. Plus, Savage already played the "crazy guy" role last year.
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 06/01/97
- Oh, boy! The Amazing French-Canadians against Jim "Juice" Powers and Hardwork Walker in today's main event. This one's going to be a barn burner.
- "Desperado" Joe Gomez pinned "The Mysterious" Mr. J.L. following a spinning sidewalk slam.
- Either Gomez is huge or J.L. is tiny (or both) as Gomez made J.L. look like a little kid.
- Ice Train pinned Rick Fuller following the Train Wreck.
- Ice Train seems like a nice guy who genuinely enjoys his job. However, he is definitely lost in the shuffle in WCW. They're not doing anything with him.
- Public Enemy def. Doc Dean and Robbie Brookside when Rocco pinned Brookside after a drive-by.
- Scott Hudson made his first quantifiable contribution as co-host of {Pro}. He let us know that the dance that everyone does when Public Enemy comes in is "Cabbage Patching".
- After the match, Public Enemy went up into the crowd to do some Cabbage Patchin'. Even before they did that, I was ruminating on the fact that Dean and Brookside were very much the heels and Public Enemy were very much the faces in this match. It's ironic as all the house show reports I get have the Public Enemy playing mega-heels at the house shows.
- High Voltage def. Villano IV and Super Calo when Rage pinned Villano IV following the Power Plant.
- The June 9th Nitro is being billed as Luger's title shot against Hogan that he earned in that Four Corners match with Giant and Harlem Heat some time ago. It's been widely reported on the Web that Sting is supposedly going to interfere and cost Luger the title. It will not be a "turn" for Sting, rather payback for the three title shots that Luger has blown for Sting over the years.
- Lee Marshall interviewed Woman and Benoit about Benoit's match with Barbarian tomorrow. Another widely reported rumor has Barbarian on his way to the WWF.
- The Amazing French-Canadians defeated Jim "Juice" Powers and "Hardwork" Bobby Walker when Carl Ouellette pinned Powers following a guillotine leg drop from the top turnbuckle while Rougeau had Powers in a Boston Crab.
- The high point of the match was Rougeau attempting to display his delicate prowess by walking the ropes like Bobby Walker. Powers gave the ropes a shake to crack open a couple of pistachios.
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 05/31/97
- Meng put "Desperado" Joe Gomez out with the Tonga Death Grip (Goozle).
- As if the match wasn't exciting enough, Renegade, who now uses the same barber as Jim "Juice" Powers, made a run in after the match to beat on his former partner, Joe Gomez. Meng put Renegade in the Goozle for his trouble.
- A run in by Renegade?! Too much excitement! Quick, someone get me a nitroglycerine tablet to put under my tongue!
- "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus pinned Johnny Swinger following a No Laughing Matter.
- Although Jimmy Hart escorted Meng to the ring for the previous match, Hart did not escort Morrus to the ring for this one. Morrus may be making a complete face turn.
- Psychosis pinned Jim "Juice" Powers following a guillotine leg drop.
- Sonny Ono is now managing Psychosis and escorting him to the ring.
- Ono claims he is going to use Psychosis to teach Ultimo Dragon a lesson.
- The Steiner Brothers def. La Parka and Ciclope when Scott Steiner pinned Ciclope after a powerbomb.
- Wrath pinned Jumpin' Joey Maggs following the Death Penalty.
- Jeff Jarrett made "Das Blunderheel" Alex Wright submit to the figure-four leglock.
- Alex Wright is having about as much luck since his heel turn as The Renegade did.
