WCW Monday Nitro - Monday, 09/15/97
- A couple of tidbits before I get started on the report.
- From Scoops:
Condolences go out to the entire Runnels family. Due to a death in the family, Dusty was not on last night's PPV and Dustin was unable to wrestle in Hartford. Our prayers are with you.
- Also, a reader sent in this report (Thank you Ice Queen):
"Contrary to other reports, Jimmy Hart is working full time backstage in WCW, and is expected to keep that position, not returning to an on camera role. On a side note, he has no interest in returning to TitanSports, and no negotiations happened between the WWF and the former manager."
- Finally, about Fall Brawl's lame ending, what else do you expect from a WCW PPV with Bischoff in charge?
- Dark matches:
- Bobby Blaze vs. Louie Spicoli....Bobby Blaze wins match
after getting up from a Death Valley Driver and nailing Spicoli with a
DDT.
- Kendall Windham vs. Chris Adams...Chris Adams won the
match. Kendall Windham came out wearing black tights, black boots, a goatee, and a bald head. He looked exactly like an anorexic Steve Austin.
- Tim Horner vs. a jobber....Tim Horner won this match.
- Tony S.: "I need to say something I've never said before. 13 years ago, I got into this business because of Ric Flair. He went to bat for me. You have seen Flair and what happ (choked up)...I can't do the show. Listen, I'm sorry."
- Tony leaves. I wonder what the point of this is.
- The opening shot was a very messed up Ric Flair.
- Stills from last night's show. Showed the door slam on Flair's head. Very dour opening.
- I'd be surprised if Larry doesn't get involved somewhere tonight.
- Dean Malenko beat Disco Inferno with the Texas Cloverleaf.
- Tenay: "Tony leaving falls right into the master plan by the nWo."
- How does it matter what Tony S. does? Sad. Tenay and Larry trying to do play by play fails miserably.
- Malenko with a HUGE lariat. Heard the pop way over here. He's pissed about something.
- Guy with a Syxx shirt starting something in the crowd.
- "Disco Sucks" chant from the capacity crowd in Charlotte, North Carolina.
- Faces of Fear beat Harlem Heat after Meng's Tongan Death Grip.
- Harlem Heat executed a Heat Seaker, but covered the wrong FOF. Meng came from behind and applied the hold.
- Eddie Guerrero to defend the cruiserweight title against Ultimo Dragon tonight.
- Mongo vs. Curt Hennig for the main event. Larry Z. "I'm going to be at ringside for that."
- Outsiders vs. Wrath/Mortis for the tag title tonight.
- STEVE REGAL FIGHTING FOR THE TV TITLE TONIGHT! OH YES! Surprised to see him back at all!
- Raven at ringside. Good to know that all this stuff unrelated to the match is more interesting than the match itself so far.
- Tenay and Larry Z. are whining about the destruction of the 4 Horsemen and the end of Flair's career. Ok, ok, ok... enough already.
- Gene-O with Kimberly, then DDP comes out.
- DDP yammering about how he hates Savage.
- DDP: "You and me... one on one... Las Vegas... Slim Jim's Haloween Havoc. Don't bother bringing your Slim Jim's, because I'll
give you something to snap into."
- Rey Misterio Jr. beat Juventud Guerrera with his signature Hurricarana.
- Rey took off his outer mask and put it on a little kid, who, afterwards, sure didn't look very excited.
- Missed drop kick by Guerrera. Neither wrestler sold the move (Rey just stood there, and Guerrera didn't act hurt).
- Somersault leap out of the ring by Rey onto Guerrera, who was out by the steel guard rail.
- "The Patron Saint of Flight Attendants" Steve Regal lost to Alex Wright after a German Suplex.
- Heard last night on the PPV: "The weekly defenses of the TV Title make this belt so prestigeous... on TNT, TBS, WCW Network..."
- So I guess that makes the Heavyweight Championship worthless.
- Crowd chanting "Regal. Regal. Regal." Guess he's the bigger face of the two heels.
- Gene-O with Ray Traylor. Yammer, yammer, yammer. Wants to face NWO members 1-on-1.
- Giant beat Konan after a Hurricarana!!
- Heh. Nope. 'Twas with the Choke Slam. Yawn.
- Konan went to the top rope, and Giant caught him. In a blown spot, before Konan jumped, Giant went to catch Konan, but he didn't jump, so Giant just stood there and tried to look dazed until Konan finally decided to jump.
- Lights went out, the green ones went on, and no music for the Giant. The laser pointer was all over him on the way to the ring.
- Hour Number Two. Nitro Girls. Bobby Heenan out. Let's get it on!
- No nWo interviews yet. Unfortunately, I can't say the same thing about Gene-O.
- DDP beat Stevie Richards with the Diamond Cutter.
- To set up the Cutter, Page gave him a front-face pile driver. Then he put Richards in a fireman's carry and gave him the Diamond Cutter.
- Richards playing the face in this match by stomping his foot, trying to get the crowd involved. Sad.
- When Page does that finger point in a circle, ya know he's gonna be on the receiving end of something.
- After the match, Raven comes in, slaps Richards, kicks him out of the ring, then kicks him like a dog. He leaves through the crowd.
- The Outsiders (w/Syxx) beat Wrath and Mortis after Nash's Powerbomb.
- Nash stood and put his boot on Mortis for the cover.
- Hall vs. Mortis to begin. Mortis held his own pretty well. Wrath came in against Nash, and got hammered.
- Wrath with the big boot to the face. 1-2- NO! Leg drop off the middle rope by Mortis. 1-2- NO!
- Syxx interferes to change the course of the match.
- That Slim Jim Gear Girl is pretty hot.
- Eric Ripoff (TM Larry Z.) comes out and introduces Hogan. He can make Nitro, but he couldn't make an appearance at the PPV last night, which was just down the road. Sad.
- Sign in the crowd: "Raw Is Taped" with thumbs down on either side. Nice!
- The rest of the nWo comes out.
- Hogan's going to die of skin cancer before he relinquishes the belt.
- Hennig gets his own entrance, to Flair's music, and in Flair's glittering red robe.
- After Hennig yammers, he takes off the robe and presents it to Hogan.
- Hogan: "This day has been perfect." (Note: Hennig was Mr. Perfect in the WWF)
- Hogan yammers about Piper, about his stint as WWF Prez, and that he can't tell Hogan what to do now.
- This is going to be re-shown about a million times between this weekend's shows and as ads for Havoc. Ugh.
- Hogan: "You're here to see the..." and the crowd fills in rather loudly: "N... W... O!"
- "Piper: What are you going to do when the whole nWo runs wild on you."
- Ultimate Dragon lost to Eddie Guerrero after a...
- Frog Splash, folks. He set it up after a Shoulder Breaker.
- When the Dragon was unleasing kicks on Eddie, Referee Mark Curtis was punching air in time to the kicks.
- It's 10:00 EDT. Just schedule Nitro Plus every week instead of going over every week. SAD!
- Guerrero gets out of a Dragon Sleeper in the middle of the match.
- We're RRRRUUUUUMMMMMBBBBLLLLLLLLLLLIIIIIINNNNGGGGG with U.S.S. Buffer.
- Commercial break after Hennig's entrance. (P.S. he came out alone).
- Mongo comes running out, throws the belt down, and the fight starts while Buffer is still in the ring announcing.
- Curt Hennig beat Steve "Mongo" McMichael without any outside interference or a screwjob ending!
WE HAVE A NEW U.S. HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION!!
- Hennig gets the early upper hand, working over Steve's knee and leg.
- Heenan: "Mongo's had knee trouble over the years." Tenay said nine surgeries on that knee.
- Mongo did the eye rake, picked up Hennig for a slam, but his knee gave out.
- Mongo's the last Horseman, said over and over by the announcers.
- Steve with the comeback. Works on Hennig's knees.
- HA! 3 times Hennig's head to the top turnbuckle, another few times to the middle one, a few more to the bottom one, and #10 to the mat!
- Mongo then went into the 3-point stance to take the legs out from Hennig, but Hennig got out of the way, and Mongo's head hit the turnbuckle.
- Hennig charged, put his arm over Mongo's head and gave him the Fisherman's Suplex for the win.
