WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 09/20/97
- It was reported sometime ago that Jerry Lynn, the talented "jobber" in WCW was let go, and some people were wondering where he wound up. Last night I was watching an ECW event on TV, and he was fighting Chris Candido (formerly known as Skip in the WWF). Lynn looked real good, and Joey Styles (the announcer for ECW) mentioned that he was known as Mr. JL in WCW, and also worked in the WWF. Styles also said that he would be climbing up in the ranks in ECW, indicating that he will probably be used better there than in the other promotions. I had to say, he did look very good. Too bad he is no longer involved in WCW. He worked hard, and it was a shame that he wasn't treated with more respect. He lost, if that says anything, but he was fighting a good match, and had some even more impressive moves than in his WCW days.
- Now for the report...
- This week's show is only an hour long, and next week has a special start time of 7:05 PM Eastern time.
- Ray Traylor beats Vincent with the move formerly known as the Bubba Slam (anybody tell me what the new name may be?).
- Vincent was sporting some new shades tonight. They looked cheaper than the ones he used to wear. It's hard to explain what they looked like, but if he shows up this Monday on Nitro and wears them, you'll know what I am talking about.
- Tony Shiavone and Dusty Rhodes kept harping on Curt Hennig's turn. Dusty says he understands how Shiavone could get choked up. Pass me the tissue.
- Pretty much from the beginning Vincent starts acting the coward, you know, begging for mercy.
- This match lasted about 90 seconds. One word...SQUASH!
- Crap! Glacier is on tonight!
- What's up with Dusty's right eye? It seems to always be closed.
- Like I said earlier, next week start time for this program is 7:05 PM Eastern.
- Hardwork Bobby Walker w/Teddy Long beats Trevor Allen after HBW gets on the 3rd rope, jumps, and slams Allen's head into the mat to get the pin.
- Tony Shiavone: "Interim Commisioner Rowdy Piper will be at Nitro in Salt Lake City, Utah this week."
- Dusty Rhodes: "I've said that from the beginning of this program!"
- Supposedly Piper has a big announcement concerning the nWo this week.
- This week's Saturday Night seems to be a lot like Sunday {Pro} or WCW Worldwide. Hmmmm...
- To tell you the truth, I have never seen HBW win. And it was a SQUASH!
- After HBW did the move (don't know the name of it), Dusty exclaims, "Oh my goodness gracious!!!".
- I just now noticed that Shiavone wears a Mickey Mouse watch. How cute.
- Glacier and Ernest Miller defeat High Voltage when Ernest Miller pins Rage (the guy with the brown hair).
- Rage has a new HUGE tatoo on his right arm. It's nothing in particular, just a fancy design.
- During Glacier's ebtrance, I changed the channel to catch the scores on about 10 college football games.
- High Voltage definetly acting the heels. Maybe they will win this one! One can hope, anyway.
- At one point, Glacier misses a spinwheel kick (what's new?), but Kaos sold it. This is where we all roll our eyes!
- Ernest Miller actually (and mercifully) ended the match with a decent athletic move. He stood up on the 3rd rope facing the center of the ring, does a 180 in the air, lands on the ropes, and springs into a flying spinwheel kick from the top rop. Not bad.
- An advertisement paid for by Ted Turner, I mean, by the nWo, for Hollywood Hogan. Why does his stinkin' shirt cost $22 and everyone else sells their's for $20? One word...Royalties.
- Nitro highlights. I didn't see it the first time, but when Hennig came out to his new nWo comrades, someone NAILED him in the back of the head with a cup of water, or someother liquid, and Larry Zybszko screamed (during Nitro), "Throw him another one!" The crowd loved it, too.
- Why is Kevin Nash always hugging and hanging on someone?
- Ultimo Dragon and Alex Wright wrestle to a time limit draw.
- Oh come on! We're not going to start this time limit draw stuff again, are we? Geez!
- When Wright comes out, the cameras were only showing him from the chest up. This IS a title bout, right?
- Shiavone and Dusty keep saying this is a, "...return match from Fall Brawl." No belt showing, I wonder who's going to win this one?
- I just noticed, the draping around the ring is wrinkled BIG TIME! Can't they iron it before the show?
- This was a pretty well worked match. Say what you will about Alex Wright, he plays the heel role pretty good.
- Dusty Rhodes talking of the Piper/Hogan match at Halloween Havoc: "Steel cage time, men get hurt." Don't go out on a limb with with the inside scoop on these matches Dusty!
- Alex Wright starts using elbow drops on the Dragon, and Dusty Rhodes says, "That ain't pretty, but it hurts."
- Ultimo actually blew a spot. You now how he always flips when running the ropes, and is about to get backdropped? He didn't jump into the flip right, and landed and his butt. He did recover nicely, though.
- At the time the bell rang, Ultimo Dragon had the Dragon Sleeper locked on. Pathetic.
- The Steiner Brothers w/Ted DiBiase defeat Buff Bagwell and Scott Norton w/Vincent after a strange series of events.
- Vincent just got squashed, and he has the guts to come back out again?
- Are Bagwell and Norton still going by Vicious and Delicious? Haven't heard that used in a long time.
- Rick Steiner gets tagged in, and gives Buff a a taste of his own medicine by mocking his posing. In doing so, he leaves himself wide open for Buff to kick him, and that's what he did.
- The ending: Scott Steiner holds up Bagwell, to set up for the Bulldog, and Vincent comes from behind Rick Steiner, and throws him of the top rope. Then DiBiase starts chasing Vincent around the ring (which was a sight to see), and Bagwell is set to do his Blockbuster finisher on Rick Steiner. Just then, Ray Traylor comes out and pushes Bagwell into Rick, who catches him and powerslams him for the to get the pin.
- Show ends with the Steiners and Traylor brawling with Bagwell, Norton, and Vincent. A La Nitro!
