WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 12/27/97
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 12/27/97
Before, I get into the show, just a brief comment. Last year, the last Saturday of the Year, they had WCW: Year in Review and I was kind of disappointed they didn't do that again. I guess some people may find that
boring but I enjoyed that last year.
- Bill Goldberg defeated Renegade with the jackhammer in a 30 second match.
- Bill got in there, did one move to Renegade, then did the jackhammer and the match was over.
- Following the match, Goldberg called out Mongo. Mongo walked out to ringside, climbed in the ring and they went at it. They fought longer than the original match. LOL
- Dean Malenko defeated La Parka after the Texas Cloverleaf.
- La Parka brought his chair out with him and was playing the air guitar with it (similar to Hogan with the belt). Before the match began, La Parka placed the chair on the floor in his corner.
- Why is sweat pouring off Malenko every single week on WCW Saturday? Is that building that hot? LOL
- Throughout the first half of the match, Tony and Dusty talk about the closing moments of Nitro and the fact that Bret Hart stood between the nWo in the ring and Sting on top on the entranceway. They said that is a metaphor for what it going on. Bret hasn't decided to go with WCW or nWo. After realizing there is a match going on, Tony apologizes that they are not paying any attention to the match and Dusty scolds him. Dusty says there are more important things happening this weekend than this match and that Tony don't owe anyone no apology. (I disagree with that...the announcers are constantly ignoring the match in the ring.)
- After the bell sounds and Dean wins, Eddie Guerrero runs in, picks up the chair La Parka had in the corner and hits Malenko with it. This knocks Dean out. Then La Parka shakes Eddies hand and turns around to gloat, starts doing his hop on one foot, and as he hops around to face Guerrero, he gets nailed by Eddie with the chair.
- Ultimo Dragon defeated Psychosis with the Dragon Sleeper
- Psychosis had control for the first half of the match but lost control to Ultimo Dragon after a series of fast kicks and chops.
- Psychosis eventually regained control but then lost it once again to Ultimo
Dragon.
- Ultimo Dragon won it with the Dragon Sleeper
- Mean Gene interviews: WCW Tag Team Champions, The Steiner Brothers, Ted DiBiase, and Ray Traylor.
- Rick Steiner has a few screws loose. He starts talking in his normal way so no one can understand him and Ted DiBiase grabs him by the back of his coat so he doesn't hurt himself. LOL
- I think Scott is trying to look more like his brother. In recent time, Scott grew a goatee and cut his hair. The only thing that makes the two look different is the earmuffs that Ric wears to the ring.
- Mene Gene: "Attention Hotline Fans" A wrestler's career maybe ending and Gene's Starrcade Predictions. (A summary of Mean Gene's hotline report can be found at the end of this WCW Saturday Nite Report.)
- Eddie Guerrero defeated Rey Mysterio Jr after the frog splash.
- "Let's go Rey" and "Eddie sucks" chants throughout the match.
- Raven's flock present tonight. (Tony and Dusty make fun of Sick Boy's name....TONY: "What's your name son? (In another voice) "Sick Boy". LOL
- Overall good, solid match.
- Several near-falls almost giving Rey the title.
- Paid Announcement by the nWo Featuring: Curt Hennig
- Referred to himself as the greatest wrestler, greatest athlete, and greatest U.S Champion of all time.
- Replay of last week's up close interview with the Giant.
- Chris Benoit defeated Saturn after Raven's Flock jumped in and interfered.
- I rue the day Eric Bishoff ever asked Woman to pull some stunt with theHorseman and nWo. (In case you hadn't heard this rumor, it is rumored (important word...rumor) Eric asked Nancy to be involved in some stunt during a match with the Horseman and nWo and she said no...so she was canned. WCW just isn't the same without Woman.)
- Tony and Dusty are still questioning weather Raven will be at Starrcade.
- Without Raven...this angle is really getting old. If Raven is sick and can't do it, they shoulda just scrapped the angle until he returned.
- Raven's Flock jumped in causing Saturn to be DQ'd. Saturn put the Rings of Saturn submission on Benoit.
- This Week in WCW MotorSports.
- Does anyone else think this is a waste of airtime?
- Highlights from nWo Monday Nitro
- They actually wasted time and showed the nWo's B-Team dismantling the Nitro set. Wasn't this boring enough the first time around? They had to show it again. Take a hint Eric...you lost Hour #3 of Nitro in the ratings to the other guys...This ain't gonna work.
- Highlights also included Eric giving Hogan the Ring replica of the championship belt and Hogan being on Sports Illustrated.
- Further highlights showed the closing moments of Nitro and Bret showing up in the nWo limo, and Hogan taking a replica of his head out of the box and freaking out. They continued the film till Sting came down on the wire to the ring. How come WCW doesn't show what happened after Nitro went off the air here? Now woulda been a good oppurtunity to see the match between Sting and Scott Hall after Nitro went off the air.
- U.S. Champion Curt Hennig defeated Bobby Eaton
- Whatever happened to Jeeves? LOL
- During the match, DDP strolled out to ringside and took the U.S. title belt and then left. There was no more mention of that afterwards, so I am not sure if Curt ever got his belt back.
- Curt didn't notice that DDP took the belt until the match was over and a "DDP" chant was going strong.
- WCW World Tag Team Champions The Steiner Brothers defeated Public Enemy after the Steiners did the finishing manuver.
- Why is Ted always carrying the belts on his shoulder? Don't the champs normally wear them around their waist?
- Tony referenced "Big Thursday Night cards in January", but obviously did not mention Thursday Thunder.
- Rocco Rock was riling up Ted DiBiase to the point wear the Steiners had to hold him back.
- Several times throughout the match, Ted DiBiase interfered smacking one of the Public Enemy around. Rocco got sick of it and grabbed the mic and challenged Ted to a one on one match.
- Close to the end of the match, The Steiners had control and Scott Steiner threw Rocco Rock out of the ring. It just happend to be the side with the table...so he went crashing through the table.
- The Steiners won with their finishing manuever.
- Mean Gene interviewed Larry Zybyszko.
- Larry addressed Internet rumors and stated he will definitely not be joining the New World "Odor".
- Why are all interviews conducted backstage in the locker room? I remember when all the interviews used to be conducted in the arena against the WCW Sat. Nite backdrop. (Where Tony and Dusty stand and talk every show)
- Mean Gene: "Attention Hotline Fans" A wrestler's career maybe ending and Gene's Starrcade Predictions. (A summary of Mean Gene's hotline report can be found at the end of this WCW Saturday Night Report.)
- Scott Hall and Ray Traylor battled to a no-contest.
- Tony pointed out that Scott Hall and Randy Savage are not on the Starrcade card and could be planning to beat up somebody on their way to the ring.
- Scott Hall did his little survey. (Am I the only person who thinks this is so boring? He should be drug out to the middle of the street and shot for doing this every week.)
- Scott throws his toothpick at Ray, and then Ray picks it up and throws it back at Scott.
- During the match the nWo walked down to ringside and was greeted by a chorus of boos.
- Not less than a minute later, Ray Traylor got some back up...Out came The Steiner Brothers AND Harlem Heat.
- Close to the end of the match, Ray did his finishing move and went to pin Scott. Scott was close to the ropes (by nWo) so, Konan pulled Scott's leg and put it on the bottom rope and called to the referee to notice it. This prompted Scott Steiner to run around the ring and get a shot and Konan and then return to his side.
- Scott Hall then got control of the match and did his finishing manuever to Ray Traylor and then went for a pin (by WCW), so Rick Steiner grabbed Ray's foot and put it on the ropes and called so the ref would notice.
- This prompted all sides to get in and start a Battle Royal of sorts.
- WCW cleared the ring of nWo and Harlem Heat walked over and raised Ray Traylor's hand.
- Show fades to black.
- During one of the Nitro highights, I saw Miss Elizabeth. Some Internet sites are still reporting that she had breast enlargement surgery and that's why she was not at Nitro for a few weeks. First of all, I looked and I don't see any significant change in her breast size. Second, I heard she was on her honeymoon with her new husband that she recently got engaged to and that's why she wasn't on Nitro. I would appreciate any comments on this.
- The most important thing from Mean Gene's report was that Alex Wright suffered a brain aneurysm but was released a few days after and this signals the end of his wrestling career at the age of 22. He hopes he can
come back. As often happens in the wacky world of the Internet, on some of the message boards, people were saying that Alex had died this week. Totally false. I assume this is the career that maybe over that Gene was referring to.
This is my first week at DDT Digest. I am just filling in this week for WCW Saturday Night. I will be doing {Pro} on a regular basis (if it isn't canceled) starting next week when Chan and Charlie take over Monday Nitro. So, see you next week for WCW {Pro}!
