WCW Thursday Thunder - Thursday 01/15/98
- Trivia Question: Chris Adams and Norman Smiley teamed together once before in WCW, as the entry from Great Britain in the Pat O'Connor Memorial Invitational Tag Team Tournament at Starrcade '90. Who did they lose to in the first round?
- For WCW Saturday Night, I will be using a guest reporter every week for a short while.
- The mailbag:
- From The Saint, on my theory about Miss Elizabeth having implants:
Sorry to burst your bubble about Miss Liz having implants. One of my friends from college studied the human body and is a
specialist on breast cancer. He says "The chest area of Miss Liz has been the same throughout the years. Normal breasts with implants will not shift and move like hers. She is one of the following: 1) Mother may hve had large breasts or 2) she has a push up bra built into the dress."
- From Tobias Twigglebottom, on the 'Andre The Giant Has A Posse' stickers:
I never saw you mention the Andre the Giant has a posse/website thing before but here's some info. Actually, in 1994, I got one of those stickers from the band Glazed Baby, and didn't know what the hell it was about. A couple of months ago I found out the whole story on alt.culture. Go to
http://www.pathfinder.com/altculture/aentries/a/andre.html. It talks about his career (it implies that he really wasn't 7'4"{!!} and mentions the Giant pretending to be his son), then talks about the "Andre The Giant Has A Posse" phenomenon, with links and stuff.
- More from Derrik Snider on the 'Andre The Giant Has A Posse' stickers:
I have a friend who knows the guys that make the Andre stickers and I have met them (I can't remember thair names). The Andre
stickers are not that old, they started making them in the 90's. They are two old "taggers" and were interested is seeing if an idiotic image and slogan would catch on if it was presented enough times. One guy came up with the idea for the Andre Has A Posse idea and they put it everywhere.
It has really caught on in the skater comunity (they put out a Andre Posse skateboard) and they have pulled some outrageous stunts with it (one time they covered a billboard with a huge 15 ft by 15 ft Andre sticker in Boston). They also said that they gave Paul Wight (the Giant) an XXXXL shirt and I have heard several reports of him having it on at bars and so on. I doubt WWF could sue them over it because I don't think they had many rights to his name (he was in a lot of feds) but I am sure that his estate could.
- Matthew Piercy on Juventud's 450 Splash:
I am a long time wrestling fan and read your DDT Digest everyday.
In your result of WCW Saturday Night 1/10/98 you questioned the validity of Juventud Guerrera's 450 splash having more power than a regular splash. The answer is quite simple. Since Juvy is spinning at a tremendous speed he creates what is commonly called centrifugal force. However, this is somewhat incorrect since there is no such thing as centrifugal force. Rather it is actually a tangential normal force that is created. Irregardless of what you call the force, it is created by the spin and upon hitting the ground Juvy has a greater force than if he just did a regular splash. Think of it this way he has two sources of energy. The energy of the fall from the turnbuckle and the energy of the spin. Clearly the extra energy source creates the greater impact. Hope that clears it up.
- Best signs from the 1/12 Nitro:
- From Rob: "I Steal Cable!"
- I got a couple e-mails about the belt Air Juvy was wearing on WCWSN. It slipped my mind but, when I saw it, it did look a little funny. My instincts were correct...it was the TV Belt! And Booker T came out wearing it five minutes later! So, not only was Juvy working a show wearing a belt he hadn't won yet, but it was the wrong belt! I wonder what the crowd who was there thought about that when they later saw him win the belt on Thursday Thunder.
- Regarding Monday Nitro, the tag team title change was some screwy booking. On Thunder, Chris Adams' decision over Randy Savage was reversed later in the show due to Lex Luger's interference. With the tag team title change, it was the exact same thing, and both Hall and Nash were on top of Rick Steiner for the pinfall, yet the decision stands. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
- Note that I predicted this title reign for the Steiners would be short just like the last one (one day, although that one technically didn't count). If Scott Steiner could just stop saying the F-word on live TV, WCW President Eric Bischoff might let them keep the belts.
- Felix Smith sent me an e-mail saying that Flair's comment to Bret Hart of "Ask Hogan about St. Louis" was referring to the retirement match at Halloween Havoc '94 which Flair lost.
- Fellow La Parka fan Greg S. from Rochester, NY let me know that the current issue of Mad magazine has a professional wrestling parody.
- Mike Lednicky passed along that if you are at all interested in the Von Erichs, there is an incredible story about them in the Official Von Erich Web Site from the Dallas Observer Newspaper at http://www.vonerich.com/DOfeature2-1.htm
- Speaking of websites, the official Arn Anderson website is at http://www.arnanderson4ever.com/. As you will see, it is very much under construction but there is an article there from the Charlotte Observer about Arn that is pretty cool if you didn't already see it. However, for those of you who have expressed interest in Arn's autobiography, you will find official information there when it becomes available. So, bookmark it if you are interested.
- If you are a fan of Mad Dog Vachon, check out issue 263 of Solie's. Even if you are not a fan of Mad Dog, but you want to put any difficulties you might be having right now into perspective, it's definitely worth a read.
- The tentative WCW schedule for February and March is available on their official website. For those of you in the Northern Virginia area, there is house show scheduled for George Mason University on Friday, March 27th. The house show at GMU back in September kicked ass, so I definitely recommend you catch this one if you live in the area. Thunder will be broadcast live from Charlottesville the night before.
- And, now, on to the show...
- Show starts off with announcers talking about the nWo problems and a replay from Nitro about the performance bond.
- Schiavone interviews Giant in the ring. Lodi starts walking around the ring with a sign "Nash Rulz, Giant Drools". Giant chokeslams Lodi from the apron into the ring. The Flock, sans Raven, rushes the ring. Chokeslam for Sick Boy. Hammer is elbowed off the apron and he goes over the railing and flattens some guy in the crowd (you could later see Hammer apologizing to him). Saturn attempts a sleeper and gets clobbered. Kidman tries a flying body press, gets caught by Giant, and gets thrown to Hammer who is still in the crowd. Nash then comes to the ring and starts yelling in Giant's face. Giant, of course, can't touch Nash. Nash throws hot, scalding coffee in Giant's face and follows Giant back to the locker room, yelling into his face the entire way.
- The Steiner Brothers and Ray Traylor defeated Black Cat, Ohara & Gedo when Scott Steiner pinned Gedo following a Steiner Screwdriver.
- On the way to the ring, Scott goes to make a muscle for the camera, and the producer cuts away. I really do think the Steiners are in trouble with the brass.
- Oh, please! The announcers are saying that DDP got mugged after Nitro and lacerated his knee and may not be able to wrestle. Interesting, since DDP announced on his official newsletter that he cut it on some equipment running to the ring to make the save on Luger on Nitro. DDP and Dillon are supposedly having a heated discussion backstage as this conversation is going on.
- Ow! Stiff kick to Ohara's head by Scott Steiner. Scott is really wrestling as a heel and shoves the referee. Rick and Ray look confused on the apron as Scott won't tag either of them in.
- Once again, Rick sets up for the Steiner Bulldog and Scott decides to do the Steiner Screwdriver on his own. DiBiase, Traylor, and the Dog-Faced Gremlin look ticked and leave the ring without Scott.
- Ernest "The Cat" Miller pinned Yuji Nagata following a Beeliner (spinning round kick off the top turnbuckle) in a martial arts match with pro wrestling rules...whatever that is.
- Sonny Ono refers to Yuji Nagata as the meanest export from Japan since Godzilla.
- Satellite feed problems that started during the last match got worse during this match.
- Really lame piledriver by Nagata on Miller.
- Schiavone interviews Dillon, with microphone problems getting in the way. DDP comes out on a crutch saying, hurt or not, he made the match and will wrestle and he promises not to sue, no matter what happens.
- A match between Scott Hall and Louie Spiccoli never happened.
- Hey! Louie's hair is now brown!
- Scott Hall came out wearing a real tag team belt and a bogus one.
- Announcers speculate why Hall came out without his partner Big Kev. Meanwhile, Hall takes his survey. From what I read, an incredible number of people switch the channel to RAW when he does his survey on Monday nights. Unfortunately, tonight they didn't have that option.
- Hall asks Spiccoli what he thinks. Spiccoli says Scott Hall is his hero. Zbyszko powerwalks to the ring and tells Spiccoli that Hall is afraid of him (Spiccoli) and Spiccoli should take his chance at glory. Hall cons Zbyszko into the ring for a match. Spiccoli Pearl Harbors Zbyszko. Spiccoli and Hall attempt a double team but Hall gets pitched out of the ring. Zbyszko then gave his spinning back kick to Spiccoli's gut, knocking him out of the ring, too.
- "Lionheart" Chris Jericho made Eddie Guerrero submit to the Liontamer on a reversal of a Hurricarana.
- Jericho does his schtick on the microphone before the match.
- As a result of winning the match, Jericho gets a title shot for the Cruiserweight belt at Souled Out.
- More satellite feed problems during a replay of the Neidhart stuff from Nitro. They continue for quite a while making everyone sound like they are in an echo chamber.
- Chavo Guerrero, Jr. comes out for a match with Bill Goldberg. Disco Inferno comes out and grabs the microphone and insults Chavo. The insults start going back and forth. Disco Inferno winds up delivering a Chartbuster on Chavo. Goldberg comes to the ring and nails Disco and delivers the Jackhammer. Unfortunately, due to problems with the satellite feed, we didn't see any of it...I had to get it all from the voiceover.
- Hogan and Bischoff come to the ring. Tenay pronounces Hogan's song's name as "Voodoo Chili". Heenan asks "Do you ever have a bowl of that stuff?" Hah. Hogan and Bischoff demand that Dillon give them the heavyweight belt back on next Monday's Nitro.
- Rey Misterio, Jr. pinned Juventud Guerrera with a Hurricarana to regain the WCW World Cruiserweight Belt, his third reign.
- If you've ever seen it said on the web that Rey looks like he's twelve without his mask, believe it. I've seen him without his mask and, from the neck up, he looks like a little kid.
- The match was all Juvy during most of it.
- As we near the end, Juventud becomes a heel, telling the crowd to shut up and flicking his tongue at them.
- According to Tenay, sitting on someone's shoulders to pin them is a "schoolboy press".
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger and "Diamond" Dallas Page defeated Randy "Macho Man" Savage and Kevin Nash via disqualification when the nWo interfered.
- Nash and Savage came to the ring separately. Nash came out with Hogan rather than Scott Hall.
- Savage talks trash to Nash in the ring before their opponents arrive. Hogan plays peacemaker.
- More video problems during this match.
- Luger comes to the ring, and DDP tries to come in behind him. Luger sends DDP back to the dressing room. DDP comes to the apron anyway. Hogan attacks DDP with the crutch, hitting him with the metal crutch so hard that it bends around his leg.
- Savage, after beating on Luger, won't tag Nash in. Finally, at Hogan's urging, Savage slaps Nash's hand hard to tag him in. Nash comes in and tosses Savage out of the ring. Nash beats on Luger and Nash tags Savage by slapping him on the head.
- Savage goes to attack Luger outside the ring and Luger Pearl Harbors Savage. Luger takes control, giving elbows to Savage and racking Nash and Hogan. Savage and Hogan start having it out and Giant comes to the ring and chokeslams Hogan. (At this point, we have no video...but it eventually comes back). The rest of the nWo rushes the ring and then Sting runs in and he, Giant and Luger clean house. Fade to black.
- Trivia Answer: Rey Misterio, Sr. and Konan
