WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 02/14/98
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 02/14/98
- What better way to spend Valentine's Day that on the Muthaship??
- Actually, I didn't, 'cause I think I would have been disowned.
- Match 1: Jim "Pushed By Marriage" Neidhart and Davey Boy Smith defeated "Demoted From Squire To This" Dave Taylor and "Meh, What's Up" Doc Dean when Smith pinned Dean with the Running Powerslam
- Doc Dean does some sort of wacky Munchkin dance as he comes to the ring.
- They show a retrospective of Steve McMichael vs. Neidhart/Bulldog
- This is the first teaming of former Hart Foundation members in WCW.
- Dean and Taylor attack before the bell, but Neidhart and Bulldog come back quickly.
- They mention that Dean defeated Jushin "Thunder" Liger in Japan a few years ago. That's impressive.
- Doubleteams by Dean and Taylor, but Neidhart makes the tag to Bulldog.
- Taylor tags in and starts working on Bulldog.
- Both Taylor and Steve Regal are apparently legit tough guys.
- Taylor with a stepover toehold.
- Taylor's not as amusing as Regal, though.
- They say that Dave Taylor's father was an Olympic wrestler back in 1932.
- Bulldog comes back with a big clothesline.
- Bulldog eats a boot running into the corner, allowing Taylor to make the tag.
- Dean runs in and gets powerslammed by the Bulldog.
- Bulldog slingshots Neidhart in with a flying shoulderblock on Dean.
- Neidhart knocks Taylor to the floor, and Bulldog hits the Running Powerslam on Dean for the win.
- Not a bad match, all things considered.
- Hudson and Tenay talk about Hogan vs. Sting at SuperBrawl VIII.
- Match 2: Sick Boy (w/Lodi) made "Lorenzo Lamas As The" Renegade submit to The Cure
- Renegade narrowly edges out Barry Windham for the "Oh How The Mighty Have Fallen" award, simply because Windham was relevant at SOME point in his career.
- And it's a lot more fun to watch Renegade get his touché handed to him on a regular basis than it is Windham.
- They actually acknowledge that Renegade was World TV champion. Why they did that to "Double A", I'll never know.
- Hudson says that Sick Boy is named after someone in the movie "Trainspotting." As I didn't see the movie, I'll take his word for it.
- Lodi sign: "Sick Boy. There Is No Cure"
- Renegade starts off with the early offense.
- Sick Boy tries to fall to the floor, but doesn't do a very good job of it.
- Sick Boy has impressed me, with what I've seen of him thus far. Not in this match, but he seems to have some good moves.
- Slingshot plancha by Renegade to Sick Boy on the floor
- Renegade comes back with a belly-to-belly suplex, and a full-nelson suplex.
- Lodi is distracting Renegade.
- Hudson: "Lodi is having a bad hair day at ringside." He's right, Lodi looks like he's wearing a "Koopa" on his head.
- Renegade nails Lodi off of the apron, but Sick Boy catches him with a springboard elbowsmash.
- Powerslam and splash by The Ultimate War...er, Renegade for two.
- Renegade misses the handspring elbow in the corner.
- Sick Boy hits a Thesz Press, and locks on "The Cure" for the submission win. The Cure is an inverted Camel Clutch.
- That move looks like it'd hurt only slightly less than Lex Luger's excuse for a backbreaker.
- Alright, we know that the Flock is "alternative." What's next? Lodi's "Dancing With Myself" leglock? Hammer's "Smell's Like Teen Spirit" suplex? Come on! Sheesh!
- Promo for Luger/Savage at SuperBrawl.
- Match 3: Jerry "The Mighty" Flynn pinned Len Denton "Texas" after a spinwheel kick.
- Haven't seen Denton before. He looks pretty built.
- Yes! Disco!
- Disco's got a multi-hued jacket on tonight. He's in street clothes.
- Actually, this is supposed to be Denton vs. Jerry Flynn. So Disco's not wrestling.
- Denton is yelling at Disco while he's dancing.
- Disco: "Nobody came to see you wrestle. These people cam here to see the Disco Inferno dance."
- Denton is yelling for Disco to leave the ring. Disco moves to leave.
- Denton turns around, Disco runs back in, kicks Denton in the gut, and gives him a Chartbuster. Disco then leaves.
- Disco's kinda like a jobber-Steve Austin. Austin runs in and gives the Stunner to the WWF's main eventers to show how much of a badass he is. Disco gives the Chartbuster to people like Denton and Barry Horowitz. Same planet, different worlds.
- Flynn comes out and starts working on Denton with some kicks.
- I've never been a fan of "Karate Fighers" like Flynn.
- Denton comes back with a clothesline and armdrag.
- Denton gives Flynn ten punches.
- Denton whips Flynn into the ropes, but Flynn comes off with a spinwheel kick for the win.
- Promo for Booker T.
- Tenay plugs Mean Gene's hotline. At least Gene's not doing it himself.
- Footage from Chris Jericho/Juventud Guererro on Nitro.
- Juvy, don't get too attached to that mask.
- Match 4: "Today's Program Brought To You By" Villano IV and Villano V beat "We Wish We Were Still The Texas Hangmen So Nobody Would Recognize Us" Disorderly Conduct when Villano IV pinned Tough Tom with a top-rope cross-body block
- Los Dos Villanos outfits don't look too good. Their old ones were better.
- Hmmm....this is a tough one to call. Disorderly Conduct are jobbers, Los Villanos are luchadores. I don't know if WCW will let EITHER of them win!
- "Billy, what does your father do for a living?" "He's a professional wrestler." "Really? What's his name?" "Tough Tom" "Have a seat, Billy."
- IV and V are the youngest of the five Villano brothers.
- Flying forearm by IV, followed by a nice DDT.
- I may lose track of which Villano is which during the match.
- V runs into the ropes, but gets kneed by Mean Mike. Tough Tom then clotheslines V.
- Big flying kneedrop by IV.
- Tough Tom hits a bulldog on IV.
- Nice doubleteam by the DC's.
- Quick tags by DC.
- A combination reverse neckbreaker/flying axehandle by the DC's.
- V tags in and starts cleaning house.
- V picks one of the DC's up on his shoulders, tags in IV, and IV comes off with a big flying cross-body for the win.
- Not a very good match.
- This week in WCW Motorsports, things are still pointless.
- Lee Marshall is in the "locker room" with Yuji Nagata and Sonny Oono
- Oono calls Nagata the "true international superstar."
- Oono calls Great Britain a "has-been" country.
- Oono's accent is coming and going during this interview.
- Speaking of Oono's Asian accent, Marshall's got more chins than a Chinese phone book. Yuk yuk yuk.
- The announcers talk about Nick Patrick's suspension, and how it'll come into play during SuperBrawl.
- Like we don't know.
- Just a question: Why is every single match "The biggest match in the history of professional wrestling?" I think they'd call Bill Mulkey vs. Randy Mulkey "The biggest match in the history of professional wrestling" if they had them on Worldwide.
- They seem to be grasping at straws with this Nick Patrick angle.
- Patrick doesn't have very good posture. Just an observation.
- Match 5: Yuji "Bear" Nagata (w/Sonny Oono) made "Geriatric" Chris Adams submit to the Nagatalock
- Hey Yuji! Say cheese!
- Oono's not too bad, as far as managers go.
- Adams looks like a happy little puppy coming down to the ring.
- Tenay: "These are two of WCW's top international wreslters."
- Lots of armbars to start off.
- Nagata with an eyerake.
- Belly-to-belly by Adams.
- Adams runs into the ropes, but gets tripped by Oono.
- Nice suplex by Nagata, who then punches Adams in the head.
- Reverse chinlock by Nagata.
- Kicks in the corner by Nagata.
- Adams gets mad, and gets even by punching and choking Nagata.
- Nagata misses a charge in the corner, and gets hit with a belly-to-back suplex.
- Adams hits a piledriver for two.
- Adams signals for the Superkick, while Oono distracts the ref.
- Glacier runs in and delivers the lamest superkick I've ever seen to the back of Adams' head.
- Nagata recovers and puts the Nagatalock on the unconcious Adams for the win.
- I kinda like seeing feuds develop on WCWSN. Makes it for a more interesting program.
- Match 6: "No-Selling Like It Was My Job" Meng pinned Kendall "Why Do They Spell My Name 'Kendell' Now?" Windham with the Tongan Death Grip
- I typed the result in as soon as I heard who was wrestling.
- Windham: "Body By Bud." Looks like he wasn't pumping iron in prison, that's for sure.
- Meng comes out with Jimmy Hart.
- Meng works on Windham in the corner. Windham tries to come back, but Meng doesn't sell at all.
- Reverse atomic drop by Meng.
- Meng's pretty painful to watch.
- Meng kicks Windham to the outside, and they brawl.
- Meng says something in Tongan. I think it was "I love my push. I don't have to react to any of my opponent's moves."
- Trapezius hold by Meng.
- It'd be such a treat to see Windham beat this stiff fool.
- Yeah, and there's winged swine outside my window, too.
- Meng starts getting mad.
- Windham hits a flying lariat on Meng (who actually reacts!), and then punches Hart on the apron.
- Windham whips Meng into the corner, but gets met with a boot to the face as he charges in.
- Meng then puts the Tongan Death Grip on for the win.
- Promo for Bill Goldberg
- Oh yeah, and 1-800-YES-IMPLANTS
- Match 7: "The 'Other' Rocker" Marty Janetty pinned Frankie "Bambi" Lancaster after the Showstopper
- Frankie Lancaster. Hmm. Shiny jacket. That's about it.
- Marty Janetty comes out, showing his Olympic spirit in his speed-skaing outfit.
- Lancaster starts off early.
- Oh, I know this guy. Frankie "The Tumper" Lancaster. I've heard of him before, but don't remember too much about what he's done. Can anyone jog my memory?
- Lancaster with a big suplex.
- Janetty with a sunset flip for two.
- Lancaster has been in control most of the match.
- Tenay: "Small Cradle to an Inside Package!" Thank you, Mr. Spooner.
- Lancaster comes off the top, but gets met with a boot to the face.
- Janetty hits a back elbow.
- Lancaster tries another suplex, but Janetty reverses it into the Showstopper for the win.
- Footage from Hogan/Savage on Thunder.
- Luger's goin' heeeeellll, Luger's goin' heeeeellll...
- Match 8: Silver King and El "Jim" Dandy beat Juventud Guererra and "There's Always Room For" Super Calo when Dandy pinned Calo with the Mahistral Cradle.
- Silver King's a funny guy. Dandy's just kinda there.
- Lots of energy from Calo and Guererra.
- The heels attack early, but Dandy accidentally clobbers King.
- The faces clear the ring.
- Slingshot cross-body from Guererra to the King.
- King begs off.
- Nice springboard spinwheel kick from King.
- Springboard dropkick by Guererra to Dandy.
- Lots of moves and reversals thus far.
- Juvy gets kicked from the front and back by the heels.
- King with a "Gory special" on Juvy.
- Slingshot plancha by King.
- Juvy comes back with a headscissor takedown.
- Calo tags in, and is clearing house.
- Juvy's doing something, but the camera's not on him.
- Calo puts Dandy on the top, and hits him with a top-rope headscissors, and goes for the pin.
- Very strange block of the pin by King. He just kinda stands there in the ring, and the ref stops counting at two to get him out of the ring. Juvy then comes in and stands around, and the ref sends HIM out of the ring. King then comes in and breaks
the pin.
- Dandy hits the Mahistral Cradle, the ref is distracted, but the ref comes back to make the three-count.
- One of the few times the heels will win a lucha match in WCW.
- Lee Marshall has Jimmy Hart with him
- They talk about the "problems" between Meng, Barbarian, and Hart.
- Hart's got an annoying voice.
- Hart mentions a lot of the guy's he's managed, like Hogan and Bret Hart.
- This is a pretty pointless interview.
- Match 9: Hugh Morrus pinned Rick Fuller "Up, And Check The Oil" with the No Laughing Matter.
- Rick Fuller comes out to lose. That guy's apparently got the devestating finisher: the vertical suplex. Only Greg Valentine's elbowsmash is more feared.
- Morrus gets tonights "Driftwood" award for a wrestler with no career direction.
- Fuller attacks before the bell.
- Morrus with a nice clothesline.
- Big belly-to-back by Fuller.
- Fuller using a chinlock a lot.
- Morrus decides that's a good idea, and uses a chinlock of his own.
- Avalanche splash by Morrus in the corner, but he gets met with a knee when he tries it again.
- Morrus mounts the second turnbuckle and hits Fuller with a clothesline.
- Morrus hits the No Laughing Matter for the win. Pretty good execution of the moonsault by Morrus this week.Last time I saw him do it, he hit La Parka in the 'nads.
- Retrospective of the Steiner problems, and their recent tag title win.
- Match 10: WCW World Tag Team Champions Rick and Scott Steiner (w/Ted DiBiase) beat Konnan and "The Most Useless Man In Wrestling" Vincent when Rick pinned Vincent after the Steiner Bulldog
- Konnan can't be happy about being paired with Vince.
- Some fans at ringside have a Mexican flag, and all of the Luchadores have been going up to it.
- Konnan puts his hat on the ref's head. That's pretty funny.
- Scott's biceps are bigger than my legs.
- Scott starts off, still wearing his leather do-rag.
- Scott shows his power to Konnan.
- Konnan whips Scott into the ropes, Vince knees him in the back, and Konnan hits his rolling clothesline.
- Butterfly suplex by Scott to Konnan.
- Rick runs in and starts barking.
- Scott tags in to Rick!
- Vince tags in and starts getting his clock cleaned.
- Rick sets up for a shoulderbreaker, but runs Vince into the turnbuckle.
- STF by Rick.
- Rick bites Vince on the touché.
- Vince tries to call time-out.
- Scott tags in, and puts Vince on the top turnbuckle.
- Top-rope belly-to-belly by Scott.
- Scott puts Vince on his shoulders, and Rick comes off the top with the Steiner Bulldog for the win.
- Nice tag work by the Steiners, for a change.
