WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 03/28/98
I wish my name was Kevin...
- Hey, remember me? I'm back. Wade is away today and forgot to set his VCR, so I get to do the honors. Just as well, since Thunder is pre-empted this week. The detail will probably be a little thinner than usual. You can only write so much about Kendall Windham and Chase Tatum.
- Well, um, as for my report for the week, um, I just did one two days ago, so I don't really have anything to say. My only note is something someone e-mailed me about that I've been forgetting to mention. It's pretty well hidden, but if you look carefully, you can see that the referees on the live TV shows are wearing earpieces.
- Um, well, that's it. Sorry. If I've got enough to make it worth it, I'll do a posting on Thursday even though there's no show.
- Before the show, TBS shows a short subject film on what it's like to run the manual scoreboard at Fenway Park. I thought it was extremely cool even though I've never even been there.
- That's followed by a commercial for Wrestlemania...
- Kidman pinned El Dandy following the Seven Year Itch.
- Rick Steiner vs. Kevin Nash in the main event tonight.
- Lodi comes out with Kidman. Match must have been taped before Lodi busted his ankle wrestling Psychosis on Nitro. Makes sense since I don't think there was a Tuesday taping this week...it's the film from last week. Generally they tape two weeks of WCWSN every other Tuesday.
- Ironically, Tenay tries to sell this as fresh footage saying that Lodi is "limping around ringside due to the injury inflicted by Psychosis". Uh, Mike, he's not limping at all. Admit it, this was taped six days before he got hurt.
- Tenay wonders about Kidman scratching himself and says he's renamed his Shooting Star Press to the Seven Year Itch. Scott Hudson takes offense to someone renaming a finishing move. Scott, you must be new here...
- Sign: "Heavy Duty Fly". Huh?
- Kidman scratches his face as the ref counts the pinfall.
- Decent opening match for WCWSN. After all, it coulda' been Duggan...
- Ultimo Dragon made Silver King submit to the Dragon Sleeper.
- Silver King was such a maniac on the way to the ring, the camera couldn't keep up with his movements.
- Sounds like a feud is in the works between Ultimo and Eddie Guerrero.
- Silver King lays waste to Ultimo Dragon outside the ring.
- Tenay gives us the obligatory warning not to "be fooled by Silver King's stocky physique".
- Announcers talk about Malenko's disappearance.
- Silver King misses a big elbow from the top.
- Ultimo Dragon accidentally kicks the camera on a top turnbuckle hurricanrana.
- Feature on Konnan. He doesn't do that much for me in the ring, but he is incredibly nice guy to the fans outside the ring. Odd, because he's supposedly a really ruthless businessman.
- A DDP/Raven promo.
- WCW World Cruiserweight Champion Chris Jericho made Psychosis submit to the Liontamer.
- Psychosis hits a suicide dive on Jericho on the outside before the bell.
- Jericho screams "Help me!" as Psychosis is beating him up.
- Jericho throws a tantrum as the crowd chants "Jericho sucks!".
- Hudson mentions James Vandenburg. Maybe he wasn't canned, after all.
- Match goes back and forth.
- Psychosis puts his knees up on the Lionsault.
- Psychosis hits a powerbomb, but the announcers just say "Wow! What impact!" instead of saying what the move was.
- Psychosis taps out.
- Lee Marshall interviews Rick Steiner w/Ted DiBiase about Scott Steiner. Rick keeps walking away from the microphone toward the camera to make his point, so we only hear half of it.
- WCW World Television Champion Booker T pinned Yuji Nagata following a missile dropkick.
- Booker T makes the mistake of chasing Sonny Onoo during the match, and gets nailed by Nagata.
- Tenay fawns over the fact that Booker T wrestled 30 minutes at Superbrawl. Anybody remember Flair going 60 minutes six nights a week?
- A little breakdancing by Booker T.
- Well, the WCW car got the pole position, but got its ass kicked anyway.
- Tenay and Hudson fawn over the "first ever" bat match. Anybody remember Giant vs. Luger at Starrcade '96?
- More Bret Hart hype. Poor bastard, he's so lost in the shuffle. Of course, that's probably a pretty healthy paycheck for being lost in the shuffle.
- Chavo Guerrero, Jr. pinned Johnny Swinger following a Tornado DDT.
- Chavo comes out wearing his new t-shirt...and he's just not happy.
- Scott Hudson explains why missing a dropkick hurts. When you hit it, pushing off your opponent's chest helps cushion the blow. Uh, OK.
- They keep talking about how Chavo is "keeping his word" by doing what Eddie tells him to. So, is this going to last for the rest of Chavo's life?
- Chavo yells "My word is my bond!" into the camera after the match.
- Saturn and Raven do a promo and talk about what they're going to do to Page. Raven says he's going to end it at Spring Stampede.
- Scott "Flash" Norton pinned Chase Tatum following the Flashback (shoulderbreaker).
- Oh, my! Chase Tatum is a big boy!
- Quick match.
- Replays from Thunder in Fairfax.
- Ray Traylor pinned Kendall Windham following the Traylor Park Trash.
- Kendall's underwear was sticking out.
- Tenay talks about the physical changes in Windham since he was last in WCW. Hudson: "Yeah, he's lost his hair". I don't know if that was a slam by Hudson or a display of ignorance.
- Tenay called the move the Traylor Park Trash tonight.
- The Cat pinned Bobby Blaze following the Feliner.
- Rick Steiner w/Ted DiBiase defeated Kevin Nash w/Scott Norton and Vincent via DQ when Scott Norton interfered.
- Nash talks smack before the match and says he was the person who recruited Scott Steiner into the nWo.
- Anybody want to bet that this match will have a clean finish? Anybody?
- Nash gets the early advantage until Steiner bites him.
- Later, Steiner bites again. That's his primary offense tonight.
- Steiner hits the Steiner Bulldog and makes the cover when Norton interferes.
- Nash hits Steiner with a jackknife powerbomb after the match.
- For some strange reason, Kevin Nash blames Scott Norton for it and Norton attempts to accept the blame.
- Doug Dillinger and a local cop put the bracelets on Nash and escort him out.
- See you in twelve days, I guess.
