WCW Monday Nitro - Monday, 05/11/98
It will never, ever, happen again!
- Sorry that we haven't been updating much recently. Chan is working on a huge Lodi project as I speak which will hopefully be a big feature on the Digest.
- I was reminded by HorsemanL to send a shout out to Hardcore Wrestling Association.
- I was in Atlanta on Saturday and took a stroll through CNN Center. I didn't get to make it by the WCW offices like I hoped, but I did take a tour of CNN Center and saw a US Title belt on display. If anyone knows exactly which belt it was (NWA, WCW, old tag belt, singles belt, etc) let me know.
- I almost bodyslammed the tour guide when he said that he was ashamed to admit that Ted Turner owns WCW.
- On to the show....
- Footage of last week's brawl
- We are live (for real this time) from Kansas City, Missouri
- Looks like the production crew wanted to keep a steady shot of their new pyrotechnics.
- Larry, Tony, and Tenay open the broadcast as usual
- Larry takes his bows as Tony and Tenay talk about Bret Hart's place in the nWo
- More footage from last week as Nash's side beats the hell out of "Horseface" Luger
- Tony just referred to that match as an old-fashioned stalmate. Ummm....
- Mean Gene interviews Bret Hart
- Hart struts to the ring wearing a Toronto Blue Jays jersey. Hart is receiving some heat as usual.
- Gene claims that Slamboree will be the first time that Hart and Savage have ever met. Definitely not true. (More info on that in the Thursday Thunder report.)
- Bret claims himself to be the world's greatest technical wrestler. He also claims that Savage went to WCW because he was running from Bret.
- Hart glares at a fan who calls him a "stupid son of a bitch". heh-heh
- Sounds like they are going to heavily hype this weekend's PPV since they have lacked to do so thus far.
- Gene welcomes the Nitro Girls
- Out comes Spice, then Fyre, Tayo (why does she write her name on everything?), Chae, AC Jazz, Whisper, and Kimberly
- Barry Horowitz vs Disco Inferno
- His leisure suit rules.
- Scott Dickinson is the ref
- Horowitz hits his lone offensive move for the night....a backbreaker
- Disco wins with a swinging neckbreaker
- Surely he didn't get in trouble over the Chartbuster
- Tony claims that WCW has laid a foundation for wrestling in the '90s. Obviously Tony doesn't remember 1992-1995
- nWo music plays and Savage makes a delayed walk to the ring sporting new Macho Man gear. Actually, it's the same stuff, just flying the new colors, the Wolfpac's black and red
- Sign: "Where is DX?"
- Funny after DX's shenanigans 2 weeks ago
- I can't believe that shenanigans is in my vocabulary
- Savage is sputtering something about Hogan
- Is it just me or does Savage cut his words short?
- Savage challenges Hogan for tonight's main event.
- Traditional WCW comeback after a ratings losses to WWF
- Refers to Hogan as a reject from a glue factory. I won't even ask...
- Savage responds to the "Hogan Sucks" chants with "Yes he does"
- I guess Hogan will make his lengthy response after the commercial break.
- Random non-wrestling related question: Did anyone watch the "Sanford & Son" Marathon last week?
- Tony: "We return to the non-stop action on WCW......."
- Kidman w/Saturn vs Juventud Guerrera
- Note: Thunder WILL be on TBS this week
- Mickey J is the ref
- The crowd is dead until Juvie takes Kidman out with a head scissors and then a springboard splash from the top rope to the floor
- Kidman hits a funky reversal
- Sign: "Kidman, I want your itch!"
- Some female was very audible in her support for Kidman
- High intensity match leading to the Juvy-driver
- Reese comes in and gives Kidman a double-choke slam
- Kidman wins with the 7-Year Itch
- Reese carries Juvie to the back as we fade to replay
- Bischoff comes out on his Harley, nice bike by the way.
- Sign: "Hollywood Style"
- Is that how Bischoff prefers it?
- Please, don't answer the previous question
- Bischoff responds to DX's actions earlier today. It seems that DX showed up at the CNN Towers today with a videocamera with Sean Waltman looking for an "apology" from Bischoff. Bischoff should have noted that the WCW offices are no longer in the CNN Towers, they have moved to a suburb 20 miles away.
- Talks about how Vince sends his "wanna-be's" where Bischoff isn't
- Denies an apology to Sean Waltman (Syxx, X-Pac)
- Throws an open invitation to Vince McMahon to show up at Slamboree for a match.
- Easy E claims that he will knock out Vinny Mac
- Bischoff, rather than be a tease, notes that you shouldn't buy the PPV expecting to see that showdown since Vince won't show. Give Eric credit for honesty.
- Damn, now that's the kind of angles WCW needs to use. In my personal opinion, WCW may have the talent, but WWF knows how to put on a show.
- Nitro Girls dancing on the entrance ramp.
- Alex Wright begins to dance once again as Doug Dougy D escorts him to the back
- Yuji Nagata w/Sonny Onoo vs Scott Norton
- Scott Norton while sticking his ugly mug in the camera: "Get that camera out of my face"
- Scott Dickinson is the ref
- Scott opens a can with a splash, body slam, and stiff chops. Onoo applauds him
- Both competitors are receiving little to no reaction when they play to the crowd
- Tony mentions that Sonny is cheering for both men
- Norton wins with the shoulder breaker
- Well, Yuji did manage to suplex Norton during the match
- Mean Gene plugs Tenay's report on the hotline tonight
- Bret Hart and Randy Savage are the topic tonight
- Tony, Larry, and Tenay talk about Hennig's choice to join Nash's faction
- Footage of Hennig joining Nash's faction last week. The rumor is that there is now heat between Nash and Hennig because Nash wouldn't give Hennig the microphone during the bit.
- Hugh Morrus w/Jimmy Hart vs Jim Powers
- It took me a minute to figure out who the jobber was. Then I saw the JP on his tights.
- Hugh Morrus wins with the No Laughing Matter (Moonsault) in an extremely quick match.
- Babbles something about focus in the camera. Maybe he was telling the cameraman to adjust the focus so he could pick up Morrus's arrant flesh.
- Konnan and Nash make their way to the ring just as we thought we were going to commercial.
- Must be time for The Bad Guy's return
- Nash talks about how he and Hall formed the nWo while Hogan was making a movie. Claims that the only nWo is the boys wearing the black and red.
- Nash: "In case you're wondering what Godzilla looks like, you're looking at him"
- Nash and Konnan show Hogan the proper way to use their stuff (Too Sweeeeet and 4- Life)
- That was some funny stuff
- Nash comments on how the production crew just cut them off
- Where's Hall? He better not return at Slamboree to turn on Nash. That angle would suck
- Ultimo Dragon vs Johnny Swinger
- Billy Silverman is the ref
- This match was pretty much a joke
- Swinger didn't do that bad though
- Chavo Guerrero Jr comes to ringside cheering Ultimo
- Ultimo screws up a top rope frankensteiner and wins with the Dragon Sleeper
- Chavo goes to shake Dragon's hand. Eddy interrupts and Chavo shoves Eddy down. Eddy dares Chavo to hit him and Dragon apples the Sleeper on Eddy. Eddy stomps Ultimo, Chavo pulls him off. Man, it's hard to keep up.
- Dusty Rhodes comes out looking as intellectual as ever.
- I can't keep a straight face after that comment.
- Dusty has got to filibuster just a little biyet
- Dusty addresses several issues such as Hogan/Nash, Bischoff/Syxx, Scott Hall. Dusty actually admits that Hall is going through personal problems. Dusty says that Savage needs to stop bitching. Dusty promises that Hall will be at the PPV.
- Larry with the quote of the night: "Speaking of mugs" as Dusty shakes his in the camera while making fun of Hogan.
- RAW will have footage of DX's assault on WCW headquarters earlier in the day. This should be entertaining.
- Goldberg 82-0 vs Len Denton
- Al Snow and Head just arrived on RAW
- Jim Ross claims that Nick Lambros called 911 asking the cops to arrest DX;
- Footage from MTV's Ultimate Music Video Feud Saturday featuring DDP/Raven
- Mean Gene interviews, oh no, JJ Dillon
- JJ is followed by Raven
- Tony: "Raven has filed a grievance with life is what he's done"
- Dillon talks about all the run-ins in the past. Mortis perhaps.... Actually, we have it on good authority that even the first fan who attacked Raven was a work.
- A professional wrestler claiming that he's in an unsafe work environment? How pathetic is that?
- Dillon is ordering that four officers protect Raven to make WCW a safer work environment.
- Officers in riot gear approach the ring. The Flock comes to the ring.
- Raven insists on a cage match with DDP at Slamboree. Loser is decided as the one who cannot answer the 10-count. Raven calls out Saturn to explain why he lost last week. Kidman teases him.
- Saturn is reinstated into the Flock as Hammer is assaulted. Jerry Flynn runs in and assaults Saturn to begin his match.
- Saturn vs Jerry Flynn
- Footage of Fit Finley winning the TV Title from Booker T last Monday
- Dave "Fit" Finley vs Rage w/Kaos
- Finley is receiving some heat on his way to the ring.
- Who's the moron with the Bert mask on?
- Charles Robinson is the ref
- High Voltage really needs a push in the US
- Powerful running clothesline by Rage
- Rage hits a big splash teasing a title change
- Booker T pulls Kaos off the top rope, Finley wins with the Tombstone, and Benoit joins in on the battle.
- Dillon starts bitching about Booker and Benoit's interference. That's stupid since he's never done anything about Sting, Lex, Giant, or nWo interference.
- JJ cancels Booker T's and Benoit's matches tonight so they can face each other. The winner will face Fit Finley at Slamboree
- WCW is returning the blows by airing Bischoff's previous interview, where he ragged on Vince McMahon, when we break to commercials.
- Another Nitro Girls dance routine
- Lenny Lane vs DDP
- This one's a no-brainer
- "Shooter" Mark Curtis is the ref of this bout
- I can't remember the last time DDP wore vinyl pants and did not have his ribs taped.
- Lane looks a little like Chris Jericho
- Lane hits a bulldog
- Lane signals the Diamond Cutter and does a Rick Rude pose
- heh, reminds me of my childhood
- DDP makes a comeback.....Diamond Cutter off the top turnbuckle
- As if you didn't know
- Oh no, mic time for DDP
- "Not only will I bang you at Slamboree, why don't you come out and get banged right now."
- That's not something you say when my mind works the way it does
- Pyrotechnics for Hour #3 at 9:49
- Hogan for his, Yawn, weekly babble
- Tony, Tenay, and Bobby question what's going to happen at Slamboree since Sting and The Giant were to face Hall and Nash
- Footage last week of Jericho facing Bore-Us Malenko
- For the record, Chan's beard looks just like Jericho's
- Matt has the old style. L-shaked sideburns.
- Me, well I can't grow a beard. A goatee, yes, but not a beard
- Gene interviews Jericho on Monday Night Jericho
- Previously recorded interview with Glacier
- Glacier claims that someone stole his Cryonic Kick
- Waaaah
- Sick Boy vs Glacier
- Footage from last Monday of Scott turning on the Dogface Gremlin once again
- Gene interviews Lex Luger
- One fan has his "friend" in the rack
- Hmm, one of Luger's well thought out and planned interviews
- Luger says that Rick Steiner is out for a while due to shoulder surgery
- Luger wnats a contract to fight Bryan Adams or Scott Steiner at Slamboree
- Thank God that was short and to the point.
- Dustin Rhodes came out on RAW and set his Goldust uniform in flames.
- Chris Benoit vs Booker T
- Intense looks on the faces of both men
- Benoit cut his hair
- "Shooter" Mark Curtis is the ref
- The match is slow from the beginning, but Benoit picks up the pace with a German Suplex
- Damn, Benoit's snap suplex looks very vicious
- Booker T counters with a powerslam
- Booker straddles the top rope after missing a Harlem Sidekick
- Benoit hits the belly-to-back suplex, goes for and hits the diving headbut, and gets only a 2-count
- Heh, the ref's reaction after a chop by Benoit is great
- Booker hits a knee, sidewalk slam, breakdances, misses a sidekick, checks on the ref, and Benoit puts Booker in the Crippler Crossface for the win and the ref calls for the bell.
- AW HELL YEAH!!!
- Main Event time 'cause Michael Buffer is in the house
- For the thousands in attendance and the millions watching around the world, let's get ready to SUCK IT!
- Oops, wrong program
- Randy Savage vs Hollywood Hogan w/Disciple
- Hogan looks drunk coming to the ring. Must have been with Hennig in the back.
- Charles Robinson is the ref
- Anyone know where Pee-Wee Anderson is?
- Savage opens with the offensive attack
- Of course Hogan has to have his lame offensive fury
- Savage rebukes with a kick to the jimmies
- Hogan with the "big foot", a scoop slam, and misses the LDOD
- Savage with a scoop slam, climbs the ropes, and Disciple pushes him off.
- Bret Hart runs to the ring, clocks Savage with the belt to give Hogan the 1-2-3
- Someone chucks a beer at Hart and the fan is greeted with "F*ck Off"
- Nash runs in, Piper declares Savage as the winner by DQ
- Piper runs his mouth off at Hart and Hogan.
- Piper claims to be the special referee for the Hart/Savage match at Slamboree.
- Piper gives us his Bret Hart imitation (Nobody knows what it's like to get screwed by a ref like I do) Heh
- The Giant approaches the ring speaking in Gaelic (just kidding) to Piper
- Sting is spotted in the rafters. No, not this silence bit b/c Giant turned his back.
- That's it for this week's program.
- Chan and myself may go to Chattanooga next Tuesday for a WWF Raw taping. If so, you can bet your sweet @$$ that we'll have a backstage dumpster report.
- And Amanda, we'll have HHH give HBK your love.
- Be sure to tune in next week for another Nitro Report brought to you by The Triple Threat
Arena report from Hackney:
- Dark matches (form Hackney):
- Bobby Eaton beat a jobber with Voodoo Man on his trunks
- Eaton's music is too loud and we were in the nosebleed seats
- Eaton hooks the tights for the win
- Public Ememy defeated The Yeti and Hollywood's nephew...also known by Tony
Schiavone as Reese & Horace
- This seems to be like Raven's Rules match as PE & Reese, Boulder fight
outside the ring.
- Public Enemy pin one of the two and they didn't use the table
- Those "Hogan sucks" chants were loud as hell, Hogan was nearly booed out of the arena, in fact during the title match they booed any of Hogan's moves and cheered on Savage. They especially booed and threw stuff after Hart's interference. In fact, they booed Hart loud, also.
- The Giant looked huge from the cheap seats.
- We knew about Sting being up in the rafters for about a minute before they put the cameras on him. (I was predicting he'd come out the huge scoreboard above the ring)
