WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 05/16/98
- Nothing in the way of notes from me this week. I was out of town this
weekend, both at my niece's first birthday party, and then at my alma mater's graduation ceremonies with my
girlfriend. That's why this report is so late.
- Match 1: Jim Duggan pinned Roadblock after Old Glory
- Woah! The biggest fatass in WCW, Roadblock!
- He actually seems like he's slimmed down a bit.
- Oh no! Jimmy one-eye!
- Hudson says that Duggan's mom is a cop in Glens Falls.
- Tenay: "Duggan seems to wrestle to the level of his competition."
- Duggan fires up his "cheap heat" machine.
- Roadblock with a big clothesline, and he drops a big fat elbow.
- Duggan gets sent outside, and Roadblock drops an axehandle from the
apron.
- Roadblock tries to run Duggan's head into the ringpost, but Duggan
shoves Roadblock into the post.
- Clothesline from Duggan on the outside, and Duggan follows it up with
punches.
- Big bearhug from the 'Block.
- Duggan tries to fight out, but Roadblock holds on.
- Duggan finally "Ho"'s out of the bearhug.
- Roadblock runs his rear into Duggan in the corner.
- Duggan has none of that, and gives ten punches in the corner.
- Roadblock whips Duggan into the corner, and Duggan sells it like
eplipsy.
- Duggan avoids a big splash from the second rope.
- Duggan hits the three-point-stance clothesline, and drops Old Glory
for the win.
- Main event tonight - Goldberg defends against Yuji Nagata, and
Fit Finley defends against Eddie Guerrero.
- Match 2: Marty Janetty pinned Barry Horowitz after a top-rope fistdrop
- "The God of Jobbers" Barry Horowitz comes out to pat himself on the
back.
- He'll be facing "The Refuge from the 80s," Marty Janetty.
- Horowitz starts off with some mat wrestling.
- Janetty, however, comes back with a rollup for one.
- Horowitz with an elbow on the rope break.
- Janetty reverses a hiptoss, and hits a dropkick.
- Horowitz with a type of "Inverted-DDT-backbreaker."
- Horowitz drops the leg for two.
- Northern Lights suplex from Horowitz! Only a two-count.
- Side suplex from Horowitz.
- Horowitz goes up top, jumps off, and Janetty catches him with an
inverted atomic drop.
- Janetty with a back elbow, and comes off the top with a fistdrop.
- One, two, three! Janetty wins with the fistdrop.
- Mean Gene has Fit Finley with him
- Finley says they call him "Fit" because he's a pure athlete.
- Finley says he's fit to do anything.
- Finley says he came to this "crusty" country to attack.
- Finley says that he let Benoit and Booker go at each other with blinders on, so they didn't see him coming from behind, and he took the belt.
- Promo for Hart/Savage at Slamboree.
- Match 3: Horace (w/Reese) pinned Juventud Guerrera after an elbowdrop
- The Flock sends out Horace Boulder, along with Reese.
- He'll be continuing the Flock/Juventud feud.
- Reese is out at ringside making a choking motion toward Juvi.
- Horace is manhandling Juvi to start.
- Horace with an avalanche clothesline in the corner.
- No offense from Juvi yet.
- Horace tries a Reese Chokeslam, but Juvi turns it into a
hurricanrana.
- Horace quickly takes Juvi down again.
- Juvi tries a cross-body, but Horace turns it into an
over-the-shoulder powerslam.
- Juvi avoids a corner charge, and opens up.
- Juvi with punches in the corner, and hits a missile dropkick for two.
- Juvi flips out of a German Suplex, but Horace hits the big boot.
- Juvi backdrops Horace over the top rope, and slingshots over the top
with a plancha.
- Horace distracts the ref, and Reese comes in with his two-handed
chokeslam on Juvi.
- Horace then re-enters the ring, hits the ropes, and drops an elbow on
the prone Juvi for the win.
- Match 4: Jerry Flynn pinned Johnny Swinger after a spinning back kick
- The fairly impressive Johnny Swinger comes down.
- He'll be facing Eric Bischoff's karate buddy, Jerry Flynn.
- Why do I get the feeling that we'll see Flynn win?
- Hudson: "Golberg is 86-0, and I think 30 of those are Jerry Flynn."
- Swinger poses, and Flynn kicks him in the back.
- Swinger ducks a kick, and hits Flynn with a face-to-the-knee
kneedrop.
- Swinger sends Flynn outside, and hits a flying lariat off the apron.
- Swinger shakes his pelvis, and walks right into a thrust chop from
Flynn.
- Flynn with kicks in the corner.
- Flynn drops a leg for two.
- Flynn ducks a kick and Swinger hits a jawbreaker.
- Swinger with belly-to-back suplex.
- Flynn hits a thrust kick, followed by a spinning back kick, and gets
the pin.
- The announcers talk about the Sting/Giant/nWo/Hogan/common-sense angle,
and show some footage
- Match 5: Disco Inferno pinned Len Denton after a jawbreaker
- Len Denton, the former top-contender to the US title.
- Yes! Disco!!
- Disco's getting back to his more heelish ways.
- Disco charges out with a clothesline, and kicks Denton in the corner.
- Denton comes back with a backdrop, and a clothesline of his own.
- Denton with a modified neckbreaker.
- Disco with a reverse atomic drop.
- Disco kicks denton in the gut, and hits his Swinging Neckbreaker.
Denton kicks out, though.
- Denton avoids Disco's fistdrop, and Denton introduces him to the turnbuckle.
- Denton misses a fistdrop of his own.
- Disco kicks Denton again, and connects with a modified jawbreaker.
He set up like a Soviet suplex, and then dropped straight down.
- Disco, proving he's got more finishers than Ed Leslie has gimmicks,
then pins Denton.
- Disco has used (that I know of) as a finisher: standing reverse
figure-four, piledriver, swinging neckbreaker, Chartbuster, and now
this.
- nWo promo of Bischoff challenging Vince McMahon.
- Nitro will be on 7pm-8pm, and 11:30pm-12:30am Monday here in DC.
- Match 6: High Voltage defeated Disorderly Conduct when Kaos pinned Mean
Mike after a double-team springboard lariat
- Haven't seen the Disorderlies in a while.
- Haven't seen tag teams in a while, actually.
- Probably High Voltage, they're the only team left.
- Yup. High Voltage. Can I call 'em?
- High Voltage have gotten a lot better since their stint in Japan.
- The Disorderlies work over Kaos, but Kaos hits a butterfly suplex.
- Rage runs the Disorderly into the turnbuckles twice, and drops him
with a powerslam.
- Kaos with a top-rope elbowdrop, and then locks on a half-crab.
- Nice teamwork by the Volts so far.
- One of the Disorderlies drops Rage with a trip, and the other drops
an elbow.
- It's Tough Tom and Rage in right now.
- Tags from the Disorderlies.
- Belly-to-back from Tough Tom.
- Tenay says that James Vandenburg will be debuting an "editorial"
section on Nitro this week. I dunno if it'll be a taped thing, or a
"Piper's Pit"-type segment.
- Mean Mike knocks Rage off the top, allowing doubleteams from the
Disorderlies.
- However, the doubleteam backfires, allowing Rage to make the tag.
- Mean Mike gets picked up by Rage, and Kaos hits a springboard lariat
for the win!
- They show the trailer for "Quest for Camelot."
- Promo for Hart/Savage at Slamboree.
- Match 7: Kidman (w/Saturn) pinned Lenny Lane with the Seven Year Itch
- Yes! Lenny Lane!
- He'll be taking on the Flock's cruiserweight representative, Kidman.
- Kidman gets an escort from Saturn.
- Kidman with the early advantage, but Lane comes back, clotheslining
Kidman over the top.
- Kidman hits what looked like a really impressive move, but I couldn't
see what it was because of the camera angle.
- Lane gets sent outside, and Saturn hits a superkick on Lane.
- Lane with a rollup on Kidman for two.
- Two guys with a lot of potential in this match.
- Kidman hits his slingshot legdrop.
- Kidman scratches.
- Lane with a sunset flip for two, but he gets met with a back elbow.
- Lane tries to fight back.
- Nice headscissors by Lane, and hits a Bubba Slam.
- Lane tries his bulldog, but Kidman turns it into HIS springboard
bulldog!
- The Seven Year Itch finishes off Lane.
- James Vandenburg with the Odditorium
- Vandy says that JJ Dillon was a great manager, but is a horrible
executive.
- Highlights:
- Wrestling fans want to see people get hurt, or they change the
channel;
- Kevin Nash was hurting people with the powerbomb, so Dillon banned
it, which created a big demand for the powerbomb.
- If people start getting hurt, don't blame the wrestlers, blame Dillon
- It was a really good interview piece, and I can't do it justice with
the highlights. Hopefully we'll see more along those lines.
- Match 8: Saturn (w/Kidman) pinned Evan Kourageous after the Death Valley
Driver
- Evan Kourageous runs down to the ring.
- He'll be getting the tar beat out of him by Saturn.
- Kidman's got a mic.
- Kidman asks if Kourageous wants to get beat by the Rings of Saturn,
or the Death Valley Driver.
- Kidman confers with Saturn, and then says "We decided that tonight,
you're going to get beaten by the Death Valley Driver. Good luck, kid."
- Saturn levels Kourageous with a clothesline.
- High dropkicks from Kourageous, and spins around with a crucifix into
a DDT.
- Kourageous tries a springboard, but Saturn turns it into a suplex.
- Saturn with a superkick.
- Kidman throws a chair into the ring, and Saturn uses it as a
sprigboard for a dropkick.
- Saturn goes up top, and hits a guillotine legdrop.
- The Death Valley Driver puts Kid K away.
- Match 9: WCW U.S. Heavyweight Champion Bill Goldberg pinned Yuji Nagata
(w/Sonny Oono) with the Jackhammer
- Yuji Nagata comes out to get his picture taken.
- Here comes Goldberg.
- Jackhammer. Splat. Win. Oh, whoops. I'm supposed to wait until he
gets to the ring before I type that.
- Tenay says that Goldberg's idol is former Oakland Raider John
Matuzak.
- Goldberg no-sells some kicks, and applies his leglock. Nagata, of
course, gets to the ropes.
- Gorilla-press-slam into an over-the-shoulder powerslam.
- Goldberg with a dragon-screws legwhip.
- And there's the spear.
- Now I can type it. Jackhammer. Splat. Win.
- Match 10: WCW World Television Champion Fit Finley pinned Chavo Guerrero
Jr. (w/Eddie Guerrero) after the Tombstone piledriver
- Eddie Guerrero gomes out, shoving Chavo in front of him.
- Commercial.
- Eddie's got a mic.
- Eddie says that he's going to show Chavo how to win a match.
- Eddie challenges Fit Finley right now. The announcers try to play
off the fact that they've been hyping the match for two hours.
- Finley comes out, and the heat machine cheers.
- Eddie now says he'll give Chavo the opportunity to win the belt.
- So it'll be Chavo vs. Finley.
- Finley with a headlock, and he jaws at Eddie.
- Finley goes to chase Eddie, and comes back in the ring.
- Trapezius hold from the champ.
- Chavo comes back, but gets a thumb to the eye.
- Stiff kick to Chavo's back from Finley.
- Nice slam from Finley.
- Finley runs Chavo's back into the ring apron.
- Finley with a bearhug.
- Finley with a backbreaker, and a Sammartino backbreaker.
- Chavo with a VERY impressive springboard bulldog.
- Chavo eats boot as he charges the corner.
- Finley hits his forward roll slam.
- Finley drops Chavo with the tombstone, and retains the belt.
- Post-match, Eddie paintbrushes Chavo with slaps.
- Ultimo Dragon comes to help Chavo, but Eddie attacks the Dragon from
behind.
- Eddie makes Chavo hold Dragon down, and Eddie hits the Frog Splash on
the Dragon.
- Eddie then throws Chavo over the top rope, and kicks on the dragon a
bit more.
