WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 07/18/98
- Greetings! I've been asked to bring you this week's Saturday Night report and what a privilege it is. I always enjoy reading the reports on
DDT Digest and often find myself comparing notes. Like Bill stated in his Thunder report, I too get a little miffed when I hear that wcwwrestling.com commercial that says it's "the only wrestling web site that matters." Uhhh..... no.
- WCW, in my humble and honest opinion, has been on the upswing as of late. I just wish Hogan wouldn't have signed that reported contract extension or I would feel even better about their future.
- All kinds of disgusting, nauseating thoughts came to my mind when Roadblock had Duggan in a bearhug on Thunder this past Thursday night.
- By the way, Bill, you didn't mention Tony saying "he literally exploded..." during the Eddie Guerrero/Psychosis match.
- We've got a 2 hour show tonight with Sick Boy against Saturn for your Main Event.
- Enough of all this, onto the show...
- Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart over Renegade with a powerslam
- Neidhart's moving up in the world. There's no "Yeah, baby!" tonight, just a "Shut up!" to the fans along the aisle. His jacket needs some work as the "Anvil" logo is beginning to wear off.
- Neidhart controls most of the match with his wide variety of technical skills such as punches and kicks.
- The first real wrestling move is a reversed suplex by Renegade.
- Renegade briefly has control until Neidhart hits a powerslam for the win.
- Scott and Mike rant on about Goldberg.
- The Dancing Fools (Alex Wright and Disco Inferno) over Disorderly Conduct after Disco hits a piledriver.
- The Dancing Fools come out separately to their own music. Disco's attire gets rave reviews from Scott and Mike.
- Scott: "Disco with a couple of wins spends all his money on tights and weirdo plastic shirts."
- Oh, by the way, Tokyo Magnum is at ringside after coming out with Alex.
- Alex Wright and Tough Tom start with Alex in control with arm maneuvers.
- Nice teamwork by the Fools.
- Disco's in and things get reversed.
- Mean Mike with a jaw breaker for a two count.
- Disorderly Conduct with a team suplex on Disco. Tough Tom gets only a two.
- Alex breaks up a pin attempt and taunts with his dancing which allows Disco to regain the advantage.
- Alex with a spinwheel kick. Pin gets broken up by Tough Tom.
- All four men are in the ring and Disco hits a piledriver for the win.
- Public Enemy runs in and begin to punk Alex and Disco. Tokyo Magnum stays outside the ring and dances a little.
- PE clear the ring and Tokyo gets thrown in by Alex.
- PE work over poor Tokyo and then lay him on a table. Grunge then crashes through Tokyo and the table from the top rope.
- Stills from the Bret Hart/Booker T match at Bash at the Beach, followed by footage of Stevie Ray on Nitro beating Rick Martel with the help of a chairshot from Hart.
- Mike Enos defeats Bobby Blaze with a fallaway slam from the second rope.
- Nick Patrick is the referee. Is it just me or has he slipped a notch or two as far as referee "pecking order" is concerned?
- Tenay mentions that Booker T will be out for 4 to 6 weeks. I hope it isn't for any longer than that.
- Enos has control during most of this pretty slow match.
- Blaze with little offense, although Tenay says Blaze has been impressive as of late.
- Enos drapes Blaze over the corner before hitting the finisher.
- Gene Okerlund plugs the Hotline. He teases of a "former WCW champ" returning to the ring.
- Norman Smiley over The Gambler with an anklelock submission
- Smiley has the early control.
- Scott and Mike mention very little of the match and instead, talk about the current Scott Hall/Kevin Nash situation.
- The Gambler reverses things with a clothesline.
- Smiley with a sunset flip for a two count.
- Smiley with a Harley Race-like vertical suplex.
- Smiley with a knee breaker.
- After working the leg over a little more, Smiley executes a roll over into the ankle lock submission for the win.
- They play Tenay's interview with Nash about Scott Hall.
- Scott Hall on the mic from Thunder bad-mouthing Nash.
- Stills from DDP and Malone/Rodman and Hogan match from BATB, followed by highlights of DDP/Disciple from Nitro with DDP getting punked by Hogan and Co.
- Scott Putski beats Julio Sanchez with the Putski Bomb
- Fast paced match.
- Sanchez with a guillotine leg drop while Putski's head was draped over the rope. Ouch!!
- Sanchez with a (almost) fisherman suplex. Two count.
- Sanchez whips Putski to the turnbuckles and then nails Putski with a drop kick.
- He tries it again, but Putski reverses things with a clothesline.
- Putski hits the Polish hammer, then the Putski bomb for the win.
- Jericho getting the belt back on Nitro is shown. Jericho is the funniest heel I've seen in a long time.
- Footage of Misterio/Malenko is shown.
- Chris Jericho over Barry Houston with the Liontamer.
- I really wish they wouldn't insult all of us by saying the match is for the Cruiserweight title.
- Jericho with the face slap.
- Houston reverses things with a hip toss.
- Jericho comes back with a nice vertical suplex. Non-chalant cover for two.
- Houston hits a German suplex into a bridge for two.
- Houston with a clothesline and then pulls up from the pin attempt before Jericho kicks out.
- Jericho rolls out of a sunset flip into the Liontamer for the win.
- Lee Marshall interviews Public Enemy.
- Scott Hall/Hollywood Hogan highlights from Nitro are shown.
- Barry Darsow over Jim Powers with the Barely Legal.
- Darsow jaws all the way to the ring. He plays the "classic heel" part very well, in my opinion.
- As this match begins, Scott and Mike are rambling on and on and ON about Buff Bagwell and what Hogan did on Nitro. Finally, Tenay says to drop the whole thing and get on with the match. Thank you.
- Darsow controls most of the early part of the match, still jawing at the fans as well as Powers and the referee, Nick Patrick.
- Darsow with a clothesline for two.
- Powers comes back with kicks but only briefly.
- Darsow with a hammerlock slam.
- Darsow puts on the Barely Legal and although all Powers had to do was extend his other arm to the rope, he submits.
- Scott and Mike plug the Hotline.
- Ultimo Dragon over Shiima Nabunaga with the Dragon Sleeper.
- Tenay says that this is "teacher versus student" as Nabunaga and other Japanese wrestlers went to Mexico City to be trained by the Ultimo Dragon.
- Scott says that if you go to a Greg Maddux Baseball Camp or the John Elway School of Quarterbacking that you will come out and be a good pitcher or QB. Huh?? You mean TALENT has nothing to do with it, Scott?
- The match starts off slowly with many amatuer wrestling moves by both men.
- Nabunaga falls for the headstand in the corner and gets kicked. The student needs to go back to school some more.
- Nabunaga gets control and hits a springboard headbutt for two.
- Nabunaga with a spin kick for two.
- Dragon comes back and executes the series of kicks that he's famous for.
- Nabunaga fires back with another spin kick for another two count.
- The student misses some kind of spinning move off the ropes and Dragon has control.
- Dragon is through playing around with the kid and puts on the Dragon Sleeper for the win.
- Footage of Dean Malenko and Arn Anderson is shown. I have to agree with Bill -- what Arn said on Thursday was one for the archives.
- Saturn comes out for the Main Event as we go to commercial.
- Saturn over Sick Boy (w/Lodi) with the Death Valley Driver.
- Sick Boy hits a spring board elbow early on.
- Release suplex by Saturn to turn the tide.
- Saturn with a series of kicks, but Sick Boy comes back.
- Sick Boy with a face first slam.
- Sick Boy with a power slam off the ropes for two.
- Saturn regains control and hits the Death Valley Driver for the win.
- Horace, Riggs, Lodi, and Raven come in. Saturn holds his own for a while, but eventually Raven hits the Even Flow DDT.
- Goldberg winning the belt over Hogan is shown. I was surprised as anyone by the outcome of that.
- Well, that's it folks. Thanks, it's been great!
