WCW {Pro} - Sunday, 08/09/1998
- Here we go again with another edition of pointless recaps and jobber matches! First, a quick trip to the mailbag...
- Tommy Brownell writes in:
- As a useless piece of trivia, I just thought I would point out that Stan
Hansen beat Rick Martel with a Boston Crab to win the AWA World Title.
That is notable only because that was Martel's finisher at the time as
well.
- Over the weekend, I've gotten a few mails about this. The actual
move was called the Brazos Valley Backbreaker, which many people said was
nothing more than a Boston Crab. On an additional note, DDT Digest's own
Bill informed me that when Martel
attempted to power out, Hansen got additional leverage by facing the corner
and pressing his own forehead into the turnbuckle, which the referee
failed to see.
- In a couple of my reports, I mentioned an NWA show on August 5 in Sanford, FL.
Unfortunately, I was not able to make it to this event. If anyone out in Internet land did attend
the NWA show at the Sanford Civic Center, please
e-mail me. I'd like to know exactly what promotion it was and what happened. Thanks.
- The {Pro} opens with a shot of Scott Hall and Dusty Rhodes storming the announcers booth on Nitro.
- Scott Hudson immediately goes into a PPV pitch and begins to talk about the main event of Road Wild.
- We are shown a montage of clips that cumulated to the main event.
- Lee Marshall interviews Chavo Guerrero, Jr.
- Chavo calls out "Pepe" to no avail. If only the same result came about when Duggan called out his board two weeks ago.
- Chavo says that Stevie Ray is the TV Champ since he is carrying the belt around.
- Chavo claims that Stevie Ray stands 6-9 or 6-12 tall.
- Chavo wants to give the TV Belt to his brother Eddy as a peace offering should he win.
- Chavo will use his newly acquired notary powers to sign the belt over to Eddy.
- They talk about the situation between Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner/Buff Bagwell.
- {Pro} Exclusive #1: Wayne Bloom pinned Jim Powers after a double underhook suplex.
- We join this battle of WWF pensioners already in progress.
- Bloom lands a couple of punches to the back of Powers and whips him to the ropes, but Powers comes back.
- Powers hits a running clothesline which sends Bloom outside.
- Bloom stalls outside the ring.
- Powers grabs Bloom as he re-enters the ring and drops him face first.
- Powers whips Bloom into the ropes but Bloom takes him down.
- Bloom goes to work on Powers in the corner.
- Bloom with a whip to the corner and a side slam.
- If you haven't caught on, Wayne Bloom is in control.
- Bloom with another whip, but Power lifts his boot as Bloom walks into it.
- Jim Powers with nine face-first turnbuckle shots on Bloom, then goes across the ring for the tenth.
- Powers whips Bloom into the corner but Powers runs into the turnbuckle.
- This allows Bloom to apply a double underhook suplex for the win. Boooooring!
- They talk about how Buff Bagwell lied to the fans about his injury.
- Starburst Road Report -- Monday Nitro will be in Rapid City, SD.
- They ask who is the best pound-for-pound wrestler and mention Ultimo Dragon. While Dragon's got skills galore, he is not being currently pushed. This can mean only one thing...
- From Worldwide (8/1/1998): Ultimo Dragon has a field day with a jobber.
- Promo for the Road Wild Encore Presentation.
- They talk about the Cruiserweight Title Situation.
- From WCWSN (8/1/1998): Quasi-Juice takes on Ron Mysterio, Jr.
- This week in WCW Motorsports -- Once again, Mark Martin just can't beat Jeff Gordon.
- Lee Marshall interviews Saturn.
- Lee asks Saturn why he is concerned with Kanyon.
- Saturn says he can concentrate on more than one guy.
- Saturn says he will dump both Raven and Kanyon on their heads.
- They talk about Bret Hart and his admiration for Sting.
- Larry Zbyszko makes deragratory comments about Dusty Rhodes, which prompts Scott Hudson to point his finger at Larry and tell him that he is in violation of Dusty's Gag Order. Yes, mommy.
- How about another analogy? Here goes. Scott Hudson : Announcer :: Vincent : Wrestler.
- From Nitro (7/27/1998): Scott Hall battles Sting.
- A long form promo for the Road Wild Encore Presentation recapping the events leading to the main event.
- Yet another PPV promo. Enough, already.
- They talk about the nWo Battle Royale.
- {Pro} Exclusive #2: Brian Adams and Curt Hennig defeat The Public Enemy when Hennig pinned Rocco Rock with the Fisherman's Suplex.
- Once again, we join this match in progress.
- Rocco Rock applies an armringer on Curt Hennig, but Hennig reverses this.
- You know, this match looks awfully familiar. Oh yeah, I happened to see this one live at the April Universal Studios Florida Tapings. You won't hear me, but I was the only one who booed The Public Enemy.
- Hennig kicks Rocco and chops him to the mat. An attempted pin gets only a two-count.
- Hennig whips Rocco but Rocco kicks him and lands an elbow.
- Rocco applies another armringer and tags in Johnny Grunge.
- Hennig applies a drop toehold on Grunge and tags in Brian Adams.
- Adams with a gullotine legdrop from the ropes.
- A couple of whips by both of the legal wrestlers and Grunge lands a chop and a flying lariat.
- Grunge with another whip but Adams counters with a piledriver.
- Adams goes for the pin but Rocco Rock makes the save.
- Adams tags in Hennig, whom pulls Grunge to the nWo corner and tags Adams back in,
- Adams goes to the second turnbuckle and connects with a double sledgehammer.
- Adams grabs Grunge for what appears to be an atomic drop but instead slams him to the mat.
- All four men enter the ring, and chaos ensues. Well, chaos for a TV Taping.
- The Public Jobbers throw Adams out of the ring and Johnny Grunge follows.
- Chant: "Table."
- Meanwhile, Adams distracts Rocco Rock, which allows Hennig to score the Fisherman's Suplex for the win.
- Brian Adams and Curt Hennig pull off a victory despite their fatigue from wrestling Saturday Night at Road Wild! If Mike Tenay or Lee Marshall would have actually said this, I would have thrown my TV out the window of my apartment.
- That match sucked live, and it sucked just as much on the {Pro}.
- To end the {Pro}, they talk about how nWo-Hollywood is unified heading into the PPV. For the second straight week, Scott Hudson uses the word "flumoxed" to describe the main event.
- That's all for this week! Hope to see you next Sunday for another hour of pain!
