WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 08/29/98
- Some random ramblings before we get to WCWSN:
- So we're calling the Page-Piper-Warrior team a "Dream Team"? To me, it's more like an old timer's reunion. What's the combined age of this team...150? However, as much you may dislike Piper, you gotta admit he still gets pretty decent fan reaction, even before the local sports team reference. It's the marks that pay the bills for the wrestling promotions, and the marks always will get into Piper, Warrior, etc.
- What is the deal with Chris Jericho and the Giant? Please, please don't let Jericho go nWo b&w! He's way too cool by himself. Besides, the nWo already has the second best comedian in Buff Bagwell.
- With the talent roster containing Sting, Nash, Hart, Hogan, Hennig, the Giant, Goldberg, and now the Warrior, what will happen if and when Savage and Flair return? All of these guys want the push for World Champion. Something's gotta give.
- Speaking of Hennig, am I the only one who thinks that Hennig is too good to be a squash for Goldberg? I've always heard rumors that he was arrogant and cocky, but he seems to have sucked up some of that pride, especially after doing the job in a match that he wasn't originally a part of (last Nitro's main event).
- Finally, I once was impressed with Goldberg. That was about 6 weeks ago. It's not his fault totally, I'm sure, but from no-selling an opponent's finisher, to the same 5 moves every match, to only going an average of 60 seconds, let's move on. In my opinion, the only way now to save this guy's career when it is time for him to lose is to turn him heel.
- Now on to the show...
- Immediately, Scott and Mike start hyping War Games, One Warrior Nation, Piper, Hogan, etc.
- Disorderly Conduct vs. The Dancing Fools
- Let's see...Disorderly Conduct is Mean Mike and Tough Tom. Couldn't we come up with better monikers for these two?
- This one is fast paced and dominated, to say the least, by Disco and the Wunder Boy.
- Alex shows some nice aerial moves.
- Disco's in and maintains control.
- With all four men in the ring, Disco hits a neckbreaker on one of the Disorderlies and a jawbreaker over the knee on the other.
- Alex finishes it off with a reverse neckbreaker for the win.
- WCW Dream Team Hype #2.
- Big Sexy t-shirt promo. I don't have one of those for the same reason Konnan doesn't.
- Chris Jericho comes out and has the mike.
- Jericho: "I want you to want.....me!!" Then Tenay tries to be funny with a Cheap Trick joke. Uh...no.
- "Jericho sucks" chant starts.
- Jericho: "It's hard for me to be your role model, your Paragon of Virtue...", etc.
- The back of Jericho's shirt says "Jerichoholics Anonymous".
- Stevie Ray, wearing an nWo tank top, comes out.
- Stevie: "I'm so tired of hearing you flappin' yo trap, Jericho."
- After some more jawing, Jericho offers Stevie a match later on in the program.
- Stevie: "We ain't gotta wait 'til later on, let's get in on right now!"
- Jericho (pointing to his watch): "Oh, I'd love to, but, you see, we're outta time." And he vacates.
- Dream Team Hype #3.
- When we come back from commercials, Tenay starts babbling about why is the Giant helping Chris Jericho.
- You know, I have 3 small children in my house, so when I see something like Tenay's face, my natural reaction is to wanna put a diaper on it.
- Kaz Hayashi vs. Mike Densmore
- If I remember correctly, Hayashi's first match on the tube was a little over a month ago and I was covering WCWSN then.
- Densmore starts a (weak) "U.S.A." chant. At least this one makes sense.
- The two trade chops to begin.
- Densmore with a suplex for a 2-count.
- Sonny Ono comes out to scout Kaz.
- Densmore hits a missile dropkick and follows it with a flying elbow.
- Densmore is showing us some talent here.
- Hayashi comes back and takes control.
- Kaz hits a "back body bomb" for the win. This move resembles Hugh Morrus' "No Laughing Matter", in case you missed it, except that Kaz lands on his back..
- Ono (smiling, referring to Hayashi): "I smell money!"
- Tenay plugs the hotline.
- Scott and Steve Armstrong vs. High Voltage
- Not much to say here, except that High Voltage was pretty good and the Armstrongs....well, there's that Armstrong curse again.
- The Armstrongs work over Rage for most of the match with double-team work.
- One of the Armstrongs does some stupid looking dance while on the outside. Man, these guys are bad!
- Kaos finally gets the hot tag.
- Kaos hits a clothsline on one of the brothers, who was on Rage's shoulders, for the win.
- Lee Marshall interviews(?) Meng.
- Marshall: "Meng, why are you so angry these days?"
- Meng just growls and grunts.
- Marshall: "Did something happen in Tonga?" This time Meng rambles something in one of the supposedly seven languages he knows (no kidding).
- Marshall asks Meng if this all has something to do with Jimmy Hart and Meng attacks Marshall.
- Geez, if that could have only been Tenay doing the interview!
- Dream Team hype #4
- After commercials, in a promo, Jerry Flynn says that he's ready for Meng and "I will survive."
- Lodi and Saturn from Nitro clips are shown, with emphasis on Kanyon hitting the flatliner on Saturn.
- Wrath vs. Trevor Blanchard
- Okay, okay, I admit it, I don't know enough, but is this Blanchard related to Tully? [Note from Bill: Nope]
- Wrath drawfs this guy in a total squash. No offense at all from Blanchard.
- Wrath does look better since he returned from the long absence.
- Wrath finishes things with the "Meltdown".
- Clips of the Steiner vs. Steiner angle are shown, hyping the match for Fall Brawl.
- I'm sorry, but this would be boring if it weren't for Buff doing his stuff! Oh, the doctor part is pretty good, too.
- Dream Team hype #5.
- You would think, by now, that the only thing that happened last Monday night was the formation of the Page-Warrior-Piper team. Gimme a break, PLEASE!!!
- Jerry Flynn vs. Meng
- Flynn opens with chops that Meng doesn't sell at all.
- Meng hits a shoulder breaker. Flynn kicks out at 2.
- Flynn comes back and hits a spinning back kick that gets Meng off his feet.
- This doesn't last long as Meng catches Flynn while attempting a flying body press and turns it into a back breaker.
- Flynn attempts some more offense but Meng hooks on the Tongan Death Grip for the 1,2,3.
- Meng refuses to let up, so ref Charles Robinson gives the win to Flynn, and then escapes out of harm's way.
- Meng is still in the ring by himself when we go to commercial.
- Meng is still in the ring, when Evan Kourageous comes out for the next match.
- Evan hits the ring and immediately Meng hooks the Death Grip on him.
- Out comes Vincent and Scott Norton, who was, I guess, supposed to be Kourageous's opponent.
- Vincent wails on Meng, and just as Meng was about to put the clamps on him, Norton attacks Meng.
- Lots of chops and punches by both that neither one sells.
- I would love to see these two in a shoot. However, this stuff is pretty lame.
- The fighting continues all the way to the back as we go to Lee Marshall.
- Lee Marshall interviews Konnan.
- Konnan says that they (the Wolfpack) aren't going to reveal who the team for War Games will be, but that we'll either have to go to Winston-Salem or buy the PPV.
- I can assure you that, barring injury or another star doesn't join the Wolfpack before War Games, Konnan won't be in that match.
- Konnan then schmoozes us, saying that he appreciates the letters, and the e-mails, and the love that he receives from us.
- Dream Team hype #6
- "Mean" Mike Enos vs. Konnan
- I wish Konnan would lose that flannel shirt.
- Konnan wants to yo, yo, yo, speak on this.
- Konnan: (You already know).
- Crowd: "Rowdy, Rowdy!"
- Konnan controls things early
- Enos comes back and hits two pathetic diving headbutts.
- A standing leg drop by Enos was better.
- Konnan comes back with the usual rolling clothesline type stuff and then the Tequila Sunrise for the win.
- Closeup of Konnan after the match. We really didn't need that, Mr. Director.
- Stevie Ray in an nWo-type monologue.
- "As far as I'm contherned, I don't forgit what someone done for me."
- "J.J., you can't pimp this brotha'!"
- "Chris Jericho, I'm gonna slapjack you right on yo' head!"
- Somewhere else in there was a "sucka'" and a "thucka'".
- Brian Adams vs. Rick Fuller
- Good Lord, we were doing so well at one point.
- Two words for this match: It sucked.
- Atomic drop by Adams, eye rake by Fuller, and one horrible clothesline by Fuller. This reminded me of the recent Adams-Goldberg match. That one sucked, too.
- Adams hits a piledriver for the win.
- Thank goodness!
- Another Steiner vs. Steiner promo followed by stills of the Stevie Ray/Booker T. angle.
- Chris Jericho vs. Stevie Ray
- Another "Jericho Sucks" chant starts.
- Jericho tries to get referree Mark Curtis to quiet the crowd down. Classic.
- Stevie Ray hits an early clothesline.
- Stevie catches Jericho in a bearhug.
- Jericho starts to get out of the hold by twisting an ear. Ha! This guy is too much!!
- Jericho mounts an offense and works on a knee.
- Control goes back and forth until Stevie hits a decent sidekick.
- Stevie: "Slapjack time!"
- Just as he says that, here comes the Giant.
- The Giant hits the ring, and Jericho starts yelling at the Giant to "Chokeslam him, chokeslam him!"
- Instead, the Giant grabs Jericho!
- The Giant holds Jericho up with one hand, looks at Stevie Ray, does the "4 Life" gesture, and finishes off Jericho.
- Jericho gets the win by disqualification.
- Don't tell me this angle's going by the wayside like others have!
- That's about it. A pretty decent program, especially for Saturday Night.
- Thanks for reading, folks.
