WCW Worldwide - Saturday, 9/26/98

• Normally, I'd start the Worldwide report off with some comment, about the Cubs or my life or something. Not this week. No, I haven't decided to stay on topic...I've just got something more important to discuss.

This is the last Orlando Tapings Worldwide...

Starting next week, Worldwide will regress to a clip show, like the {Pro}, where we just see highlights from other programs. No more matches. It's sad, I think. By chance, this is my 60^th report and I figured I've reported on about 300 matches since starting for DDT Digest. And, before I started doing this, I watched a lot more.

See, what a lot of people don't realize is that I don't have cable. Never have. My university doesn't feel it's necessary to provide it to dorm rooms and I've had roommates who "don't watch TV." I rarely get to see Nitro or Raw...and if I wasn't on the 'net, I'd have no idea what was going on. For me, it's always been shows like WCW Worldwide, {Pro}, WWF Superstars, Shotgun, that have kept me interested in wrestling. The matches may have not been the most important...they might have been filler, but for me, it was the only wrestling I'd get to see. And somehow, they got me interested enough that I followed it, without even knowing what was totally going on at times.

Through these syndicated shows, I've been lucky enough to catch some great stuff. A Bret Hart-Bob Backlund match, which got me more interested in wrestling than anything before it. Barry Horowitz beat Skip. Harlem Heat win the tag belts from the Nasty Boys, with an assist from the Bluebloods. A tag team of Johnny B. Badd and Brian Pillman (before the words "work rate" or "spot" meant anything to me, I knew that was a killer team) Eddie Guerrero vs Chris Benoit, before either of them were big. The unbelievable combo of Lizmark Jr. and Rick Fuller have a cool match. And tons more stuff, that just isn't in my mind at the moment.

Even with the meaningless matches, Worldwide's been fun to watch...you never know what kinda of match could show up on your TV. And if they keep that one week+ delay and go to a recap format, it's going suck big time. Sure, next week, the show will go on. But it won't be the same...

• Two quick Worldwide/{Pro} stories, before I go on
  • I was watching around Fall Brawl '94. They had been hyping a Johnny B. Badd/Brian Pillman #1 contender match for the US title that you may know of. I found this incredibly odd, seeing as those two teamed up to take on Bunkhouse Buck and Dick Slater two weeks previous. Anyways, a couple weeks after, they're recapping what happened on the Saturday Night where Badd, the winner of the bout, was supposed to get his shot. Mero seemed to no-show, so Pillman went out and faced the champ, Sting, in his place. We only got to see a second of Pillman coming out...but in that one second, I looked at him and said "He's gone nuts.". Pillman has this insane look about him, you could see it his eyes..I instantly figured he'd turned. Anyways, they continue the recap with an interview with Diamond Dallas Page (w/ Maxx and Kim). DDP is ranting about how he should be getting the title shot, being TV champ, and Badd walks in. Okerlund, who had been talking to DDP, asked Badd where he was. Badd said he had a flat tire. Maxx says it must have been really bad to have four flat tires. Badd questions how Maxx knew that...and KOed Page with a right hook (should have done that in the Brawl For All). I'll never forget the look Kim had on her face...this cartoonish shock. It was incredibly funny.
  • This must have been around the same time on {Pro}. Cobra, fresh of his loss to Craig Pitman, (I didn't know what had happened at the time and assumed he won, being the face and all, although I really didn't like him....) was out to take on some no-namer and, as was his ritual, was shaking hands with the fans and about to give his dogtags to a fan, when the no-namer came out of the ring and started beating the heck out of Cobra! He destroyed Cobra on the outside for a couple minutes, threw him in, the match finally started, he did a (dragon? Don't remember) suplex and got the win in about 7 seconds of ring time. Cobra didn't even get his vest off! I remember thinking...that no-namer rocked! Chris Cruise, Larry Z and Dusty all had a ball calling the replay were thinking the same thing. They mentioned the no-name's name one more time and I remember it now...

• Er, for reasons I can't discuss, I wasn't paying a lot of attention to Worldwide for the first half of the show. Please excuse me if my early summaries are way short.

• Lenny Lane vs Chris Adams
  • Maybe I'm not gonna miss Worldwide ;)
  • I remember this match as being very not good...
  • Adams with a superkick for the win
• Todd Griffith vs Bobby Blaze
  • I wonder where guys like Griffith and Blaze are going go, if they're kept. WCW doesn't need as many people, since they don't have to fill out the tapings.
  • Near the end, Griffith goes for a moonsault, but misses.
  • Blaze hits a high knee and a double underhook suplex to get the pin.
• Atlantis vs Len Denton
  • It's Atlantis debut match...and judging from the program they picked to air it, he's not going be pushed big...
  • Atlatis has a similar outfit as Lizmark Jr., but is bigger, about Silver King size.
  • Atlantis ducks a clothesline and grabs him in a backslide to get the win.
• Villano IV & V (w/2 good necks) vs (The) Public Enemy (w/a table they aren't going use.)
  • Ahh, the magic of video tape...
  • Tony goes nutso early in the match, talking about how big this match is and how it affects so many things. I make a mental note to tune him out.
    • I'll really think it's sorry if they dump the Tag Team Titles to Japan, as rumored.
  • Grunge and IV start this one off
  • Grunge whips IV into the ropes, IV comes back with a shoulderblock
  • IV runs off the ropes again, only to get backdropped.
  • Tag to Rocco , and a double backdrop occurs.
  • IV crawls over to V to tag out.
  • V comes on and hurts Rocco with some chops
  • Rocco comes back with a couple of clotheslines
  • V whips him into the ropes near the Villano's corner, so IV can give him a knee to the back.
  • Drop toe hold by V, and a legdrop by 4 for the quick double team
  • V is tagged in and IV whips Rocco into the corner
  • V follows with a splash, but Rocco ducks out and clotheslines IV.
  • Race to the tag!
  • Johnny Grunge on fire!
  • IV is thrown out and V recieves the Drive-By. And all is right with the world.
  • TPE goes up into crowd and waves their hands in air like they don't care...
• Lee Marshall's interview
  • He runs down the date and time of Nitro in Chicago
  • Lyin' Lee says Lex Luger was supposed to be his guest, since he's from the area, but he's having car problems
  • Lee says that David Penzer, WCW ring announcer, is looking for a replacement. I've got my money on Disco.
  • DISCO INFERNO! I swear a wrote that before he showed!!
  • Lee Marshall is not happy with Penzer.
  • Disco's wearing an ugly lime green shirt. Looks like he's taking clothes from Alex Wright...
  • Disco talks about partying on Rush Street after the show. And before the show. And maybe during the show.
  • Marshall wants him to go to Rush Street. NOW.
• Tony and Larry plug the new format. Either you know it by now or you'll find out next week.
• Main Event, Last Match, Glacier vs Saturn
  • This is sooooooooooooooooooo fitting to end Worldwide on.
  • Why does Glacier still get the 5 minute entrance?
  • Just me, or when Saturn wears that do-rag, he looks just like Mero.
  • The old feud is brought up..."Glacier sucks" chant!
  • Saturn fist to the head
  • Saturn karate kicks..whip...dropkick.
  • Saturn whip Glacier, who rolls out.
  • The arena is filled with smoke or something because of the snow. You can't see the ring at all.
  • Glacier spends 30 seconds outside the ring, maybe hoping the smoke would clear up. Saturn goes out after him and chases him around but gets hit coming back in for his effot.
  • Saturn with a Russian leg sweep for 2.
  • Glacier with a Stun Gun
  • Glacier rams Saturn's head in to the turnbuckle, and comes back with some martial arts kicks and poses
  • Saturn rolls him up with an inside cradle. 1 count
  • Glacier with ahard kick, 2 count. count
  • Glacier pushes the ref, the ref pushes back.
  • Glacier with a chin lock.
  • Glacier whip, reverse, Glacier blocks a hip toss but gets hit with a belly-to back suplex
  • Saturn with a clothesline...shoulderblock
  • Glacier comes back up and goes for a Cryonic Kick, Saturn blocks it, and picks him down with a Death Valley Driver
• Er, that's it.
• Well...I was planning on doing this last week, before I knew what was about to happen with Worldwide...but I'm going use it anyway. It's fitting. Folks, the lyrics to song of the last tag team you'll see on Worldwide and has had a similar slide from greatness, or at least above-averageness...The Public Enemy Song...
