WCW Worldwide - Saturday, 01/30/99
By Bill
- Wade is unavailable to do Nitro this week, so Jesse is doing Nitro, and Cubs Fan is covering WCWSN. Cubs Fan offered to cover this edition of Worldwide as well, but I said I should do it. After all, we've all got to spend our time in Purgatory. :-)
- Larry and Tony talk about Souled Out, and they show stills from the card, with voiceover by Scott Hudson.
- Scheme Gene interviews Bam Bam Bigelow.
- Okerlund refers to Bigelow's finisher as a "sitdown piledriver". Bigelow corrects him with the proper name: "Greetings from Asbury Park".
- Bigelow seems to be really enjoying that chewing gum.
- Bigelow says Wrath was just a stepping stone on his way to Goldberg and eventually the World Heavyweight Championship.
- On a commercial, I find out Sable will be at the World of Wheels in Chantilly, Virginia, on Sunday, February 7th.
- Review of Nitro the night after Souled Out. Highlights are the Horsemen attacking the Wolfpac limo and the set up for the "match" between Eric Bischoff and David Flair.
- It's obvious that David Flair has been taking lessons on how to work the microphone from Bobby Eaton.
- Back from commercial, they show the "match".
- Zbyszko: "I've never seen a roll of dimes in my life". That's a reference to him handing a roll of dimes to Curt Hennig to use in beating Nick Bockwinkel for the AWA World Heavyweight Championship on 5/2/87.
- I know I'm way behind the curve here, but I just figured out that the point of this show is that it's the wrestling show for people who don't have cablevision. That's why it's on 118 local stations across the U.S.
- Replay of Misterio vs. Luger
- Zbyszko: "Rey be nimble, Rey be quick, Lex Luger puts you in the torture rack, he'll break you like a stick."
- Okerlund hypes the match between Flair and Hogan at Superbrawl.
- Okerlund interviews Jericho about the referee possibly being paid off for his match against Saturn at Souled Out. Jericho says that as a role model, he could never do that. Okerlund notes the irony of the fact that Scott Dickinson is now driving around a new car. They then debate whether you can say "putz" and "peon" on TV. They finish up with Jericho saying that Okerlund is a role model for all 73-year-olds. Hah!
- In the first match of our double-exclusive main event, Scotty Riggs vs. "Mr. World Class" Chip Minton
- Minton is now definitely a full-fledged heel.
- Scotty Riggs is no longer wearing his eye patch.
- Billy Silverman is your referee.
- Match starts by Minton spitting his gum at Riggs.
- Minton follows the gum up with a boot to the solar plexus and some forearm shivers.
- Headlock by Minton, Riggs shoots Minton into the ropes, and Riggs hits a dropkick.
- Tenay and Hudson wonder about the missing eye patch. They theorize that he may have never needed it.
- Scott Hudson claims that Chip Minton raising his head during the bobsled cost the U.S. the medal at the Olympics.
- Stomps by Riggs, snapmare and fistdrop.
- Clubbing blow to the head by Riggs into an armbar and knees to the shoulder.
- Whip by Riggs, he misses a clothesline, and Minton hits a terrible tackle.
- Bodyslam and legdrop by Minton into a headlock.
- Minton tosses Riggs into the corner, biels him out, and hits a legdrop and starts choking Riggs on the ropes.
- Minton tosses Riggs into the corner, and drives in the shoulder.
- Minton misses a dropkick, and Riggs hits some kicks, tosses Minton into the corner, and he hits a high knee.
- Snapmare by Riggs, but he misses an elbow off the second rope.
- Suplex by Minton.
- Full-body splash off the ropes by Minton, but he only gets a two-count. Riggs has powered out of Minton's finisher!
- Riggs hits the flying forearm and gets the pin at 3:58.
- "Mr. Hole-In-One" Barry Darsow vs. "The Cat" Ernest Miller w/Sonny Ono
- I have the feeling I'm not going to like the way this one ends.
- Hudson calls Darsow "Mr. Hole-In-The-Head".
- Charles Robinson is your referee.
- Darsow brings out his clubs and putting green.
- Darsow talks smack to the crowd, and he says that unlike what he usually does, instead of showing you he's the greatest golfer in the world, he's going to show he's the greatest wrestler in the world.
- Darsow says that although Miller is a 3-time karate champion, he (Darsow) is a 4-time PGA champion.
- Miller comes out and talks smack to Darsow (and the crowd) from outside the ring.
- Darsow: "Ya stinkin' bum!! Get in here!!!"
- Miller gives Darsow the warning, in attempt to free himself from legal indemnity.
- Miller turns his back to count to five, and Darsow doesn't leave.
- Darsow goes for a clothesline, misses, and Miller hits a standing back kick.
- Miller throws Darsow into the ropes, goes for a back body drop, but he telegraphs it and he gets clubbed by Darsow.
- Darsow comes back with punches and a bodyslam, and Miller rolls out of the ring.
- Darsow goes out of the ring to chase down Miller, and threatens him with a putter, which the referee takes away.
- More stalling by Miller, but Darsow lands a punch.
- Darsow charges, Miller steps out of the way, and Darsow's shoulder jams into the corner.
- Miller goes to work, but misses an elbow.
- Darsow with a punch to the breadbasket.
- Darsow with a suplex.
- Darsow with a hotshot against the top rope. Two-count only.
- Darsow levels Sonny Onoo, and gives Miller a double-axehandle on the back of the head.
- Miller comes back with a dropkick to the knee of Darsow.
- Darsow goes for a golf club, and gets in a tug-of-war with Ono.
- While Darsow is distracted, Miller hits a kick to the back of the head, and pins Darsow with handful of trunks (right in front of the referee) at 3:46.
- Miller twirls the golf club after the match as if he were a majorette.
- Larry and Tony say their goodbyes.
