WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, October 9th, 1999
By Bill
Dan had VCR trouble this week, and his back up VCR failed, so I'm going to do the report from tape. It will be somewhat abbreviated...I probably won't call it move-for-move because I've got a bunch of stuff to do today and I hadn't planned on covering this, but you'll get the general gist of things. Also, I'm not doing a pre-show report. That will, as usual, be in my mid-week report.
You see, I don't want to overdose on wrestling early in the day, because the missus and I will be watching the Heroes of Wrestling PPV tonight. Look for Xavier Doom's coverage of the show tomorrow on DDT Digest.
- Match 1: Lexie Fyfe (w/pierced eyebrow, pierced bellybutton and bad attitude) vs. Mona (w/my heart in her back pocket)
- Lexie comes out to Chris Jericho's original WCW music.
- Are Mona's hips and legs getting bigger, or is it just my imagination? By the way, did you ever notice she wrestles barefoot?
- Arm wringers and classic wrestling holds to start off, with advantage traded.
- Tenay and Hudson talk about Kidman being in the shower with Torrie Wilson.
- Lexie comes back with some power moves, including a combination side body press and elbow drop from the second rope.
- Mona comes back with a sunset flip for two, but Lexie hits the Traylor Trash.
- Mona comes back with a headscissors, and scores a series of moves leading up to scoring the win with the Twin City Twister.
- Your Winner: Mona, via pinfall with the Twin City Twister.
- In the between-match comments, Hudson notes that Psychosis' "two-day reign" as Cruiserweight Champion came to an end on Nitro.
- Also, Disco will not be wearing the belt as champion, as it clashes with his outfits.
- Match 2: WCW World Cruiserweight Champion Disco Inferno (w/o belt) vs. Hardbody Harrison (w/happenin' 'do and one-legged tights)
- In his pre-match comments, Disco Inferno claims to have been born in the DJ booth at Studio 54.
- Nice 'do, Hardbody.
- Hardbody with the early advantage with classic wrestling moves.
- Tenay correctly notes that Disco Inferno has been World TV champion on two previous occasions.
- Disco comes back with kicks and chokes.
- Reverse atomic drop and running lariat by the champ. Two count only.
- Swinging neckbreaker by the champ. Two count only.
- Hardbody comes back with punches and a sunset flip for two, but Disco comes back with a clothesline.
- Chokes by the champ.
- Advantage is exchanged, Hardbody misses a corner charge, and Disco hits the Last Dance and gets the pin.
- Your Winner: Disco Inferno via pinfall following the Last Dance.
- Replay of the Outsiders' return on Nitro. Hmmm, from what I saw, that acted like a couple of immature kids. Some things don't change, I guess.
- Match 3: "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton (w/o push) vs. Adrian Byrd (w/o hair)
- Bobby comes out acting like a heel, and the sound engineer turns up the heat machine.
- Adrian gives a clean break, and Bobby gives a cheap shot.
- Test of strength comes out even.
- Adrian scores a dropkick.
- Bobby hits some clubbing forearms, Bobby hits the spinning neckbreaker, and...he gets the pin!
- Man, that was fast, but Bobby got the win, and that always works for me.
- Your Winner: Bobby Eaton via pinfall following a spinning neckbreaker.
- Halloween Havoc promo.
- Gene Mean pimps his hotline.
- Madusa (w/implants bigger than the French Angel's head) comes to interview the, er, uh, group of Brits and Finley (w/Union Jack) that don't have a team name.
- Madusa looks to be drunk and bloated, as usual.
- Geez-o-pete, Bobby Eaton would do a better job at this than Madusa.
- Madusa tries to ask Finley about his injury, and he grabs the microphone away from Madusa and calls her a "babbling idiot". He says that the doctors said he would never walk again, but they must have assumed he was American.
- Regal grabs the mic, calls Madusa a "bloody tart", and runs down Duggan and Erik Watts.
- Taylor grabs the mic and says Duggan will respect the Union Jack by the end of the evening.
- If they paid Madusa a dollar to do that interview, she was grossly overpaid.
- Match 4: "The Cat" Ernest Miller (w/Sonny Onoo) vs. Nor-man Smi-ley (w/yellow tights)
- Miller appears to be wearing a lampshade on his head.
- Miller says in his spiel, "I hate Rome, Georgia. It's all rednecks here." The production crew bleeps out "Rome, Georgia" (I replayed it several times to read his lips), and the announcers practically fall out of their chair, acting as if he used some awful curse word.
- Please, don't insult my intelligence.
- Actually, there is a funny moment when Miller's talking trash to some old lady in the crowd, and she pulls out a cell phone and says she's going to call The Cat's momma.
- I think this may have originally been purportedly a dance contest, but Miller clotheslines Smiley as Smiley starts the SMBU.
- Miller goes to work, but Smiley comes back with a big slam.
- Onoo distracts the referee, and Miller kicks Smiley in the 'nads.
- They go back and forth, and Smiley does the SMBU.
- Smiley does one dance too many, and Miller stuns Smiley and hits the Feliner and gets the pin.
- It looks like Miller nailed Smiley pretty hard with that kick.
- Your Winner: The Cat via pinfall following the Feliner.
- Replay of the thrilling formation of the Duggan/Watts team.
- Match 5: "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan (w/2x4) & "Daddy's Boy" Erik Watts (w/o charisma) vs. Steve Regal and Dave Taylor (w/Fit Finley)
- Hacksaw starts out with Regal, and Hacksaw of course doesn't have to sell a single move.
- Taylor and Watts are tagged in.
- Watts executes a nice standing headscissors on Taylor. Never seen that from a guy that big!
- Regal is tagged in.
- Watts gets dumped out of the ring, and Finley gets a punch in.
- Taylor is tagged in. Erik Watts is officially the "face in peril".
- Taylor continues to work on Watts.
- Regal is tagged in.
- Watts reverses a bulldog on Regal, and he tags Duggan in.
- As Watts and Regal clean house, Finley attempts to sneak in with the 2x4. Scott Armstrong appears, grabs the 2x4 away, and tosses it to Duggan.
- Duggan starts clubbing Regal and Taylor with the 2x4. Referee Nick Patrick calls for the bell. The referee's official decision is a double-disqualification.
- Your Winner: Certainly not the viewers.
- Replay of parts of the Benoit/Hitman tribute match to Owen from Nitro. After that, portions of an interview with Bret Hart after the match are shown.
- Promo for Harlem Heat vs. Morrus/Knobbs at Halloween Havoc.
- Match 6: Devon Storm (w/huge honker) vs. Kidman (w/Konnan)
- Devon plays the arrogant heel.
- Moves traded, and first big move is Storm tossing Kidman out of the ring over the top turnbuckle to the floor like a dart. Yee-ouch. Kidman lands on one of the camera guys.
- Back in the ring, Storm gets a two-count, and puts Kidman in the Rear Chinlock Of Doom.
- Legdrop on the breadbasket by Storm, and back to the chinlock.
- Kidman fights his way out, standing switches exchanged. Storm with a Northern Lights Suplex for a two-count.
- Storm's definitely taking it to Kidman here, but it's just a matter of time before Storm attempts a powerbomb and gets it reversed.
- Belly-to-back from the second rope attempted by Storm, but Kidman reverses.
- Kidman whips Storm into the corner, but is met with an elbow as he charges in.
- Gourdbuster by Storm. Two-count.
- Storm goes for a flying body press, but Kidman catches him with dropkick in mid-move.
- Bulldog by Kidman.
- Kidman misses a charge, Storm hits a German suplex, mistakenly called a belly-to-back suplex by Hudson.
- Kidman reverses a move into the short powerbomb.
- Kidman hits what is actually a belly-to-back suplex.
- Slingshot guillotine legdrop from the apron by Storm.
- Oh, no...here we go. Attempted powerbomb by Storm is...reversed into a face jam! What a surprise!!! Kidman then gets the pin.
- Your Winner: Kidman via pinfall following a reversal of a powerbomb into a face jam.
- Tenay has the nerve to say it was "the surprise factor" that allowed Kidman to get the win. Surprise? To whom??
- More of Gene Mean pimping his hotline. If you call it, you deserve to have your money taken away...at $1.69 a minute.
- Replay of Flair/Hogan vs. Sting/Luger. I can't say it enough...the fact that they are still playing Hogan to be the face and Sting to be a heel just goes to show out of touch WCW is. Heck, at this point, the fans would cheer Sting putting Hogan into a wood chipper.
- Match 7: Eddie Guerrero (w/big smile) and Rey Mysterio, Jr. (w/blonde hair) vs. Disorderly Conduct (w/o Texas Hangmen outfits)
- Eddie vs. Mean Mike to start.
- Announcers talking about how paranoid Sting is right now. *sigh*
- Eddie with early advantage, Mike gets a few moves in, Eddie comes back, and Mean Mike tags Tough Tom in.
- Mini-Me is tagged in. Tough Tom eats a few moves, but gives Mini-Me a big powerbomb and tags Tough Tom in.
- Tough Tom goes to work and eventually tags Mean Mike back in.
- With Eddie's help,
Ricky Morton Mini-Me gets a sunset flip for two, but the beating continues.
- In one more allusion to Ricky Morton, Referee Billy Silverman doesn't see Eddie tagging in, so Rey takes a further beating.
- Rey finally tags Eddie in, and Rey and Eddie pull of some sweet double-team moves.
- Eddie gets the pin after springboarding Mysterio into a head scissors on one of Disorderly Conduct.
- Your Winner: Eddie Guerrero and Rey Misterio, Jr. via pinfall by Eddie Guerrero.
- Match 8: WCW U.S. Heavyweight Champion Sid Vicious (w/chewing gum) vs. Dave Burkhead (w/o a chance in hell)
- Scott Hudson says he just got word that, if Sid wins tonight, it will be his 1,000,000th victory. Nice.
- Sid sure does like that chewing gum.
- Burkhead attacks before the bell.
- Sid with a chokeslam. Sid with a powerbomb. Sid with the pin. The time of the main event match that you've been waiting two hours for: 32 seconds.
- Sid takes the microphone, and launches a tirade against Goldberg, including his claiming to be the "Ruler of the Squirrels". Time of the tirade: 2 minutes and 50 seconds.
- Well, it's that nice...the post-match promo following a main event being over four times as long as the match itself.
- Your Winner: Sid Vicious via pinfall following a chokeslam and powerbomb.
The Good: Bobby Eaton got a win, and two good looking women fighting each other is always a plus.
The Bad: Watts and Duggan, two of my least favorite wrestlers, as a tag team. Ugh.
The Ugly: Sid's tirade being over four times as long as his match.
