House Show Results from Wichita, Saturday, May 9th, 1998
Because my fiance thinks wrestling is for, as she says, "retarded people and white trash", I ended up going with my dad to see the show. He is really a fun guy to hang around for being 54 years old. He is "wise" to all that goes on with pro-wrestling, plus he sprung for the tickets. How could I say no? We got to the Kansas Coliseum in good time to check out all the merchandise and have a few beers, but really just had fun listening to the crowd. I now know that I take for granted that I "know" how the game works. For the most part, 95% of the crowd were marked out for whatever was thrown at them that night. Oh well, I think that is the draw for pro-wrestling, especially in central Kansas. I would guess that most of the crowd would have been lucky to finish high school. That is not meant to sound arrogant from me. This is redneck territory to say the least. I am a college student, but I have been a fan of wrestling for about 15 years now. It's funny how the game never really changes. Last night was no exception either. The place was about 90% full and ready to go. The matches
started a little after 7:30 and here is what happened.
- "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton over Steve Armstrong
- Not very much wrestling here. A lot of posturing and complaining.
- The match ended with Eaton hitting the swinging neck-breaker on Armstrong.
- Yuji Nagata over Ernest "The Cat" Miller
- Lots of hip tosses and clotheslines in this one.
- Ernest did a good job getting the crowd into this one.
- Chants of "USA" throughout. I found this funny. It is cool with some idiot Russian or Middle-Eastern wrestler, but this guy is from Japan!
- Nagata gets the pin following a "shoot-style" roll-up using the ropes.
- Decent second match.
- Konnan over "The Gentlemen" Chris Adams
- Konnan got a huge pop from the crowd.
- The Gentlemen gimmick just doesn't work. The crowd pretty much was silent for his entrance.
- Konnan does a pretty good job working the mic. You all know the lines he uses to fire up the crowd.....
- Not too much ring work for these two. Lots of clotheslines and hip-tosses here too.
- Konnan, in the middle of the match, grabs the mic and says "Yo quiero Taco Bell!". That pretty much sums this one up. Crowd went nuts!
- Tequila Sunrise and Konnan gets the win.
- Juventud Guerrera and Silver King over La Parka and Psychosis
- Almost no response for La Parka and Psychosis. Kind of surprised me.
- Huge pop for Juvi and Silver King. (don't let his stocky appearance fool you!)
- This match was your typical Lucha-libre match. Anything goes and tags mean nothing.
- About one minute into the match, La Parka sees a sign that says "La Parka is A Sex Machine" and goes out into the crowd to get it. Then for the rest of the match, he holds it like it is a baby. Really lame.
- Multiple moves off the top rope are done, and finally Juvi nails Psychosis
with the Juvi-driver and gets the pin.
- Gratuitous chair shot by La Parka on Psychosis for no apparent reason other than solidifying his position as the "Chairman of WCW".
- Decent match all the way around.
- WCW World Cruiserweight Champion Chris Jericho over Disco Inferno.
- Jericho comes out to verbally taunt the crowd and he did a great job. Every shlub in the place was screaming back at him. Great mic work.
- Disco comes out to a good pop. Usual dancing and all that....
- These two worked a really great match. Went back and forth the whole time.
- Disco hit the swinging neck-breaker and followed with the Chartbuster (I thought they took that away from him.....?) ref counts 1,2,3 and we all go nuts thinking he is the new cruiserweight champ. The ref waves it off saying Jericho's foot was on the rope (it was).
- Disco misses a dropkick and Jericho turns him over and makes him submit with the liontamer. Great match.
- Goldberg over Saturn
- Saturn comes looking good with a new haircut. No response from crowd.
- Goldberg....well, you all know what happens when he comes out...HUGE POP!
- This match was pathetic. Saturn was over Goldberg the whole time and sure enough, the same ending....spear with a Jackhammer follow-up. This whole Goldberg hype is getting old. He really isn't that great of a wrestler, but he is just so over with the crowd. His matches are all fast.....it's like 1,2,3---I just won now go buy my t-shirt!
- I don't care what people say, Stone Cold is bigger in person that Goldberg. Goldberg is more ripped, but SCSA seems much more intimidating. I like his gimmick better too.
- Giant over Scott "Flash" Norton with the chokeslam.
- The match was terrible. I think it lasted about 4 minutes.
- Norton kept working on the Giant's knees and finally the Giant got mad and just choke-slammed him and got the pin.
- This match reminded of something we would see on Worldwide, {Pro} or whatever it is I watch on Saturday nights.
- Interesting note here---Paul Wight really did play basketball at Wichita State University. Sometime around 1990-1991. I got to see him play some and it is no mistake that he turned to professional wrestling. He really stunk at hoops. He was a lot bulkier then and couldn't even dunk in the scrimmage I saw. At least here, he is having success.
- Sting over Scott Hall with the Scorpion Death Drop.
- Konnan comes out with Scott Hall for this one. Does this mean Scott Hall is in with Big Sexy, Konnan, and Savage? We'll see.
- Hall does the usual survey and mentions something about being too crazy for live TV. Pal, you are lucky to still have a job.
- Hall also mentions "Victory party at the Marriott afterwards." I bet the staff there really would have wanted him to leave that out!
- Sting comes out to the biggest pop of the night.
- He gets in the ring and says something about being a "working-man and survey says you suck!". Great response from the crowd.
- This one went back and forth whole time. Quite a bit of taunting from Konnan,
but some good wrestling moves.
- Eventually, Hall has Sting up on his back for the Outsiders Edge and somehow, Sting gets out of it to hit the Scorpion Death Drop on Hall and Konnan.
- 1,2 (house lights go on!), 3. Sting gets the win and all the fans head for the hills!
Overall, it was a pretty decent show. It was worth the ticket price just to see all of it live. I was hoping to see Nash, DDP, Raven, and Booker T, but they had other "commitments" with MTV. I saw a house show with the WWF last fall and they really put on a better show. Bigger names and more action. Maybe that is why they are currently moving up on the WCW....well, thanks for reading this and keep watching pro-wrestling!
