House Show Results from Grand Rapids, MI, Sunday, June 7th, 1998
Submitted by Mike S. of Hope College and Erik J. from Grand Rapids, MI
Note from Bill: These guys both sent great reports, so I'm posting them both.
From Erik J.:
- Fit Finley beat "Mean" Mike Enos via the Tombstone
- Brian Adams beat "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus with a backbreaker following a missed No Laughing Matter.
- Hacksaw Jim Duggan beat the Barbarian with the Old Glory kneedrop.
- Psychosis and Juventud Guerrera beat Damian and Norman Smiley when Juvy pinned Damian following a Juvi Driver.
- Dean Malenko beat Chris Jericho with the Texas Cloverleaf.
- Goldberg beat Saturn with (surprise, surprise) the Jackhammer.
- Kevin Nash beat Diamond Dallas Page after a clothesline.
- Sting pinned the Giant after the Scorpion Death Drop.
Quick Comments: This was my first live wrestling event, and I thought it was really cool in person. My friends and I are planning to go to Nitro the next time it comes to the Palace. Goldberg got the biggest pop, followed by DDP. The best match was Malenko/Jericho.
From Mike S.:
The card for this show changed so many times that it was hard to keep up with it. Advertised: Sting v Nash, Giant v Hall, Goldberg v Hennig, and Disco v Jericho. Then Giant v Luger, Goldberg v K-Dawg, Nash v Sting, and Malenko v Jericho. Next Giant v Nash. Well, it still turned out to be a very good show, even though it kind of helps to have front row tickets. Penzer says card and each wrestler's name it followed by respective response.
- WCW TV Champion Fit Finley v Mike Enos
- Very long stall to start this match and Finley is loudly told that he sucks. Of course, Enos is now the good guy.
- "I can't suck, I'm not an American!"
- 5 minute "Should I shake his hand?" segment. Yawnnnn. Hey, Enos slapped him!
- Both guys are really working the crowd well.
- Suplex, tombstone piledriver. The TV belt stays put.
- Brian Adams v Hugh Morrus
- During the match, Adams tells some ladies to "shut up, ya fat idiots!" It was funny because it was true.
- Morrus "Ya know, I could actually win this thing." Maybe.
- Adams gives a glare to a man calling him Crush.
- Laughing Man up for the No Laughing Matter, but Adams moves out of the way.
- Piledriver, Adams racks up another for his growing record to historical greatness.
- Hacksaw Jim Duggan v. Barbarian
- Duggan, by far gets the loudest pop of the night. For the Barbarian, however, was a crowd response of next to zilch.
- Wow! Viscous loogie by Barbarian.
- Several chants of "USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! "
- Out into the bike racks. Ref won't allow the chairs to be used.
- Duggan has quite the foul mouth.
- Uh Oh, the football stance. Spear, jackhamm... I mean hit, knee 1,2,3.
- Duggan stays in ring for a possible interview. Wait, it's just to have us chant some more. "USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!"
- Norman Smiley & Damien v Juvi & Phychosis
- I believe Smiley's new gimmick is a dancing porn star. At least that's what I thought.
- Damien's extent of English is "shut up" and "f***" Both of which he directed towards the fat ladies.
- Tons of high flying action. Juvi is way over.
- Double dropkick by Phychosis.
- Just Juvi and Damien in ring now.
- Juvi Driver, it's over.
- Intermission. It's now time to go by a "program", or the WCW magazine, for $1.05 over the coverprice. I got my DDP shirt while almost everyone else was Wolfpac or Goldberg.
- WCW Cruiserweight Champion Chris Jerricho v the CHALLENGER Dean Malenko
- As you can see, I'm not recognizing Malenko's title reign. It obviously is a conspiracy against Jericho and he has precedence, so there. Give the belt back and make sure that it never, ever, happens again.
- Jericho comes out to a round of boos, and proceeds to proclaim his valid reasons of why the belt should be his. He also can't seem to remember what town he is in and rags on the rude fat ladies.
- Malenko comes out, big pop, and says that yeah, Jericho can have the belt back, if he beats him tonight (haha, a catch). And that he came here to give the people what they want, for him to kick his ass!
- Jericho takes belt, kisses it, and while it is at his face, Malenko dropkicks him.
- Jericho insists that the match be ended, declaring that Malenko gave up to his vicious armbar.
- Typical match, nothing too fancy.
- Malenko escapes Liontamer not once, but twice.
- The conspiracy continues as the Cloverleaf is applied, leaving Malenko with a well earned but tainted victory. Great match.
- Jericho does his crybaby schtick afterwards. I really hope Jericho sticks around, he is very enjoyable to watch.
- Goldberg v Saturn
- This match, in its all 2 minutes of glory, left me unsatisfied.
- I'll let you figure out how it ended.
- DDP v Nash
- Nash says that even though DDP will be Wolfpac sooner or later, they ought to give the people of Grand Rapids a show, and then go have a beer afterwards.
- DDP agrees and the match is underway.
- A lot of power moves by the Vegas Connection teammates.
- DDP's ribs must be better now, the tape is gone.
- Boot to the face by Nash and match abruptly ends.
- Nash gives DDP a shirt and a hug.
- The two bask in the glory of the Wolfpac cheers for quite some time as both Wolfpac and DDP hand gestures are exchanged.
- Giant v (The Man They Call) Sting
- Giant comes out first, doing his best Scott Hall imitation. He then proceeds to talk to the ref, who can't keep from laughing.
- Sting out to the new Wolfpac rap, and with new red boots.
- Stinger splash, wooooooooo to the rafters!
- Giant comes back with the big elbow drop.
- Sleeper hold by the Giant, Sting finds it in him to fight back.
- More splashes, deathlock, could this be it...!?!?!?!
- Nope, sorry. Giant's legs are too fat.
- Deathdrop, 1,2,3. Awwwwwwww yeah!
- Post match, Giant chokeslams ref, who does a very good unconscious twitching pose.
All in all, great show. Afterwards we saw Saturn and Jericho leaving together, but that was it. Tried to start some "Free Ric Flair" chants, but no one joined in. Wrestlers sure do use a lot of profanity.
