WCW House Show Results from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, 03/30/99
By Doug C. at University of Waterloo
WCW was in Kitchener on the 30th of March to tape for WCW Saturday Night & Worldwide. The place was sold out. When Penzer started reading signs around the arena, he mentioned my "NORMAN SMILEY RULES" sign. Aldo would be happy to know that Kitchener is Smiley country.
Since the reports generally start with trivia, here is mine:
Who were the main eventers the last time the big two came to Kitchener?
- Match 1: Eric Watts vs. Booker T
- The TV Title is on the line
- Like Erik has a shot, at least in 1999
- 'Rana (!) from Watts.
- Insert sound of my jaw hitting the floor
- An awful Axe Kick spot
- Erik was doubled over. He then stood up, and realizing his error, moved back into position
- Flapjack, then a missile dropkick
- Match 2: Scotty Riggs vs. Al Green
- Both men do bumps & grinds for the crowd
- Riggs visibly laughs at Al's attempts
- Riggs takes it with the five-arm
- Match 3: Kaos vs. Bobby Duncum Jr
- Kaos starts off fast, and is playing the face
- Pumphandle slam & flying elbow
- Bobby gains control with outside-the-ring brawling
- Still, he falls to a springboard clothesline
- Match 4: 'Mean' Mike Enos & Chris Adams (?) vs. Disorderly Conduct
- Enos shows off a cool move
- He holds him in Fishermanbuster position, and then drops a DC guy with a shoulderbreaker
- Both Enos & Adams take a turn as the face in peril
- Hot tag to Enos
- Adams superkicks one DC guy from the ring
- Twisting powerslam off the buckles wins it for Enos & Adams
- Match 5: Barry Horowitz vs. Vince
- loud "BAR-RY" chants
- Horowitz looks solid with his usual, clean offense
- Vince gains control with an armbar takedown, then gets a submission win
- Stevie Ray comes out after the match
- He insults Vince, who naturally runs out
- Match 6: Prince Iaukea vs. Lenny Lane
- Lenny plays the heel
- He is introduced as being from the South side of the East side on Minneapolis
- JE-RI-CHO chants throughout
- decent hold-for-hold counters from both men
- Prince counters one bulldog with a crescent kick
- The second one takes place after Lane escapes the Rack, but only for 2
- Iaukea comes back, and wins with a high-cross body
- Match 7: Chris Jericho vs. Kaz Hayashi
- Insert Jericho speech from Toronto, but just sub Kitchener for Toronto
- Cheap heat can't change my feelings towards my Role Model
- Kaz blocks the first try for a Liontamer
- Jericho slingshots him instead
- Hayashi tries a Victory Roll
- Countered by a Liontamer
- Kaz taps
- Match 8: Fit Finley vs. Rick Steiner
- Fit does his typical stiff work
- Meanwhile, Rick does the comedy stuff
- He does the forward roll spot
- Finley gets a chair, and gets DQ'd
- A local paper refered to Rick Steiner as "The Road Dog" (!) in their article on the event
- Match 9: Jerry Flynn & Meng vs. The Barbarian & Hugh Morrus (w/ Jimmy Hart)
- Jerry nods towards my "JERRY FLYNN IS GOD" sign
- That is about all that is noteworthy about this one
- The teams fight their way to a Double Countout
- After the match, Jimmy Hart drops some names, and challenges Flynn & Meng to a no-DQ rematch
- The same local paper had a photo from this match with the caption "Ming headbutts his tag partner Terry Flinn"
- The photo was of Meng & Barbarian
- Match 10: Disciple vs. Wrath
- Bathroom break
- While waiting in line for a Pepsi, Prince Iaukea came around
to chat with the fans, and sign autographs
- Considering my notes said "Prince Imajobba", the latter was likely out of the question
- Wrath's music plays as I return to the arena
- Great match, since I didn't see any portion of it
- Match 11: Barry Darsow (w/o golf gimmick) vs. Villano 4
- All Darsow, save for a bit at the end
- V4 does some lucha stuff, but misses a somersault
- Barry gets a submission with the "Breaker 1-9", or whatever it is called nowadays
- Local paper - "Barry Darson & Villano 4".
- Match 12: Hammer vs. Gothic Knight
- How can you tell this was bad?
- My notes include the phrase "Shoot me now!"
- Flashback, after what seemed like an eternity
- Match 13: Lash LeRoux vs. Billy Kidman
- Lash has included some "Double L" poses in his arsenal
- Good match, with quite a few two counts near the end
- Kidman rolls through the Whiplash
- Rydeen Bomb gets 2 for Kidman
- Lash comes back, but tries a powerbomb
- I think you know the rest
- Match 14: Kaos vs. Bobby Duncum Jr
- Again?
- The audience was not into this at all
- I proudly joined the "BO-RING" chants
- Kaos gets 2 with a top-rope legdrop
- he punches at Kaos in the corner, only to be tripped up
- A foot on the ropes leads Bobby to the Pay Window
- Match 15: Johnny Swinger vs. Bobby Blaze
- Generic low card match
- Johnny gets cocky with a pin
- Blaze takes advantage of that, and takes Swinger over with a Northern Lights Suplex
- Match 16: Jerry Flynn & Meng vs. Barbarian & Hugh Morrus (w/ Hart)
- They seem to forget that there was a ring, and fight on the floor
- Terry Flinn & Ming win with a pin on the floor
- Match 17: Rick Steiner vs. Fit Finley
- Again?
- At least they explained the previous rematch.
- This one is all Road Dog
- He wins easily with a top-rope bulldog.
- Yes, Fit walked out on his own power, so maybe he is the true winner.
- Match 18: La Cucaracha (sp?) (w/ Juventud) vs. Konnan (w/ catchphrases)
- LC is billed as hailing from a tiny village just outside of Mexico City
- In a LOL moment, Juvy translates a Cucaracha interview
- Konnan comes out for a rebuttal, then lets loose the catchphrases of doom
- Quick match
- Rolling clothesline, then a Chartbuster on the Cucaracha
- Konnan removes the mask
- of course, he reveals Disco
- Match 19: Norman Smiley vs. The Cat (w/ Sonny Onoo)
- NORMAN!
- Smiley gets one of the loudest pops of the night.
- Miller interrupts the Big Wiggle with a kick
- Back and forth action
- Norman does both the Big & Little Wiggle
- Onoo pops onto the ring apron, so Smiley pops him
- Cat blasts Smiley with the Feliner
- Over
- Match 20: Silver King & Scott Armstrong vs. Raven & Saturn
- The Flock guys were over in Kitchener
- Both teams showed some good teamwork
- Raven plays the face-in-peril
- King hits a beautiful superkick
- Still, he needs some Valium
- King will miss a senton from the top turnbuckle
- Hot tag
- The Flock do a Total Elimination
- Well, if you substitute a Raven clothesline for a Kronos spinning heel kick
- Evenflow on Silver King
- Match 21: Chip Minton vs. Chavo Guerrreo Jr.
- No, Chavo can't carry Minton
- Tornado DDT
- Match 22: Sick Boy vs. Super Calo
- A new look for Sick Boy
- Long blonde hair
- Tights stolen from Jeff Jarrett's locker
- A spinning heel kick sends SBoy to the floor
- Calo dives outside with a plancha
- In the ring, he tries a cross-body, but gets caught
- Powerslam, and then The Cure to end it
- Match 23: Jason Anderson vs. Scott 'Flash' Norton
- Match 24: Juventud Guerrera vs. Rey Misterio Jr
- What can be said about this pairing that hasn't already been said
- Typical excellent match between this duo
- Juvy does a new move
- Late in the match, Juvy nails the Driver, but is too tired to go for a pin
- Later, he goes for a 450, but Rey crotches him
- Top rope rana, and that's it for Mr. Never Surrender
3.5 hours later, the show is over. Solid action for the entire evening.
A great show. Titan will have a hard time "getting it" (my money)
after a show like this. Kudos.
Answer: In October of 1994, Lex Luger defeated Tatanka.
