This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 12/9/96
- The show started off with bagpipes and Piper walking out wearing a Carolina Panthers t-shirt. He said, "It's nice to be home" and got a good pop. (There were very few nWo shirts in Charlotte.) Piper hopped around putting all his weight on his bad leg to prove it was all right. As he was talking, the crowd starting chanting "Hogan sucks!". Piper said
he's only done one thing he's ashamed of. At the Nassau Coliseum they (he wouldn't name names) wanted him to take a dive for Mister T and they curled Piper's gloves so he wouldn't hurt the actor. Piper said he would NEVER take a dive again. He said he has nothing against the nWo and he's not WCW. He noticed an "nWo Country" sign and pointed out that some time ago on Nitro, six nWo guys were in a hotel room wearing leather, drinking champagne, and there were no girls. He said to the guy with the sign, "You figure it out". Piper called Hogan out to have the fight NOW. He said, "Bring him out because what doesn't kill me makes me stronger! And I'm feeling pretty powerful!". Piper than walked back to dressing room.
- M. Wallstreet used the Stock Market Crash to pin Mike Enos.
- The match lasted less than a minute. DiBiase came out with a piece of paper when the match started and got Enos' attention with it as Enos thought it was a contract. Wallstreet Pearl Harbored Enos while he was distracted and scored the win. Wallstreet took the paper, read it, smiled, and went back to the dressing room with it.
- The tape of the Benoit/Woman video and Sullivan's reaction was replayed. This was a set up for what comes after the next match...
- "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus pinned The Renegade after the No Laughing Matter" (moonsault from top rope)
- After the match, Morrus was about to give Renegade a second No Laughing Matter when "Desperado" Joe Gomez rolled Renegade out of harm's way.
- Unfortunately for Gomez and Renegade, they were ticketed by the Charlotte police after the match for exceeding the city's Anti-Jobber Zoning Ordinance. :-)
- After the Morrus/Renegage match, Sullivan came out on a tear. He was wearing a Four Horsemen t-shirt with black tape over all of the faces. Sullivan got right in Schiavone's face. "That video was addressed to me! I have a life outside the ring! That video affected someone in my life at home! Schiavone, you are a pawn and all you care about is ratings!" It was a decent spot but would have been better if Sullivan didn't keep forgetting his lines.
- A video treat of Sting beating the faces up was played to the tune of "Where have all the good men gone?...We need a hero!" Puh-lease!
- Okerlund interviewed Kevin Greene. Hmmm, the world's worst interviewer and world's worst interviewee. This should be good. Greene threatened McMichael and Hogan. *yawn*
- "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko pinned Jimmy Graffitti (Jim Backlund) with a reversal of a suplex into a small package to retain the World Cruiserwight Title.
- The match went long and was fairly well fought, but not one of Malenko's best.
- After the match, Okerlund interviewed Sonny Ono about Malenko. Ono dropped his accent and told everyone the only reason he has the accent is so he can get free education, free education, and sometimes even free money for staying home.
- The Faces of Fear defeated The Nasty Boys after Barbarian pinned Knobbs after bonking him on the melon with Jimmy Hart's megaphone.
- The match was extremely chaotic with Barbarian getting clocked with the megaphone, Hart getting pitched out of the ring, and plenty of chairs meeting backs and skulls.
- Flair came out to be interviewed by Okerlund. He invited Piper out for a Charlotte welcome and embraced Piper. Flair said Piper is a true icon. Flair asked the crowd what they think of Hogan to a resounding chorus of boos. Flair said, "You know what? Hogan sucks! He sucks!" Piper broke character and starting cracking up. Flair aplogized for dropping the ball with Hogan. Flair said he wanted to see Piper "kick Hogan's ass!". Piper said this was his last shot and respectfully declined the Horseman's help and said he must do it on his own. He then told Flair "I love you, man!" and kissed him on the forehead. Eyyeww! All that scar tissue!
- Mike Tenay said he understood Piper turning down the Horsemen's offer since Piper has gone it alone throughout his entire career. Uh, I don't know about you, Mike, but I remember "Cowboy/Ace" Bob Orton being Piper's bodyguard for a few years in the WWF in the 1980s.
- Mike Tenay asked where Hogan was. Heenan said, "He's out laying eggs like all chickens do!"
- "Lionheart" Chris Jericho pinned "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton after a missile drop kick.
- During the match, they showed a clip of Jericho saying he was going to give Nick Patrick another beating.
- Okerlund interviewed the Steiner Brothers about their run-in with Sting last Monday. Okerlund pointed out that Scott was nursing an injury (he has a previously secret hip injury, rumored to be steroid-related). Scott asked a question of Sting, "What are you thinking giving my brother a baseball bat?! He's nuts!!" The Steiners called Sting out to no avail. It was an odd interview.
- Schiavone announced that Lex Luger has signed to meet The Giant at Starrcade.
- "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson pinned Sgt. Craig "Pit Bull" Pittmann following a DDT which was set up with a metal suitcase to the breadbasket by McMichael.
- Pittmann has definitely turned heel. He doesn't slap hands with the humanoids anymore and he now sports a moustache.
- Pittman was sporting a snappy new "The beatings will continue until the morale improves" t-shirt.
- You know, if this wrestling thing doesn't work out, with his new moustache Pittmann could make a decent living winning Charles Barclay look-alike contests.
- Steve and Debra McMichael escorted Arn Anderson to the ring. Debra was wearing her Mrs. Illinois sash and her tiara and was carrying her sceptor.
- While the match was going on, a clip of Sullivan threatening Anderson was played. He asked Arn how he would feel if he came home and Barrett (Arn's wife?) wasn't there. Sullivan said,"My life has gone cold but you and I are going to heat it up next week".
- At one point in the match, Anderson went to the top rope to attempt a move. He came off the top just like Ric Flair always does. The hard way. No surprise there.
- In the post-match interview, Arn started to blame himself for the Benoit/Woman thing. Debra told him not to blame himself for problems with "that little tramp". McMichael told Arn not to get caught up in a soap opera. Arn finished the interview by saying, "Benoit, come home. Woman, I've got a bone to pick with you."
- In a semi-final match of the U.S. Title tournament, "Diamond" Dallas Page pinned Jeff Jarrett after Scott Hall gave Jarrett a Razor's Edge, unbeknownst to Page.
- Page meets the winner of the Benoit/Eddy Guerrero semi-final match next Monday night for the U.S. Title at Starrcade.
- Schiavone called Page a low-life during the match.
- Heenan's comments on an upcoming TV taping in Green Bay: "Green Bay is the fashion capital of the world. That's where they make all the bowling shirts for women. Size 58, large."
- Scott Hall never lost his toothpick, even while delivering The Razor's Edge.
- After the match, when Page realized what happened, he told the nWo to stay out of his business.
- When the Rick Steiner / Scott Norton match was scheduled to start, Piper stormed to the ring and called Hogan out. Bischoff came out as Hogan's messenger. He called Piper a gimp. Piper whacked him and was about to chair him when the Outsiders came running out to rescue Bischoff. Piper held them off with a chair and Kevin Greene came to the ring to aid Piper. Then, just as things were getting interesting, the show ended. And to add insult to injury, as the show ended, TNT immediately cut to the opening credits for Thunder In Paradise.
- Bischoff got him with a lot of crap walking to the ring, including getting totally drenched and getting whacked on the noggin with a roll of toilet paper. For me, that was the highlight of the show.
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 12/8/96
- M. Wallstreet pinned an unnamed, but well-built, jobber after a Wall Street Crash (Samoan Drop).
- "Squire" Dave Taylor pinned "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton with a rollthrough using the ropes.
- After the match, "Hascksaw" Jim Duggan did a run-in to point out to the referee that Taylor was using the ropes. When Taylor came at Duggan, Duggan back body dropped him.
- Looks like Taylor and Duggan are headed for a feud. I'm sure it will generate just as much excitement as the Duggan/Wallstreet feud did.
- Ray Misterio Jr. pinned Billy Kidman after rolling Kidman forward while sitting on Billy's shoulders as Kidman was perched on the top rope.
- Kidman got a lot of good moves off in this match. It was pretty even until the end.
- Konnan pinned Brian Kees after a DDT which was performed by bearhugging Kees, tucking his head, and then falling backward.
- Akira Hokuto pinned Meiko Satomura with a Dragon Suplex and a bridge to advance to the semi-finals of the Woman's Heavyweight World Title tournament.
- Hokuto made her entrance wearing an elaborate outfit that included something that was a type of gas mask. Zbyszko commented: "She must have a dressing room next to The Nasty Boys".
- Hokuto will meet Kauro in the semifinal. Medusa will meet Zero in the other semifinal match. This surprised me as I thought the entire tournament was a set up for Medusa and Zero to meet in the finals.
- Zbyszko commented on women's wrestling by saying: "Two flew over the kitchen's nest and landed where the big boys play".
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 12/7/96
- "Lionheart" Chris Jericho pinned Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker after a dropkick off the top rope.
- Well, he was originally Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker of the State Patrol, then he was The Leprechaun, then Jack Boot for all of a month, and now he's back to being Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker, except now he's a military sergeant instead of a police sergeant.
- The Amazing-French Canadians def. Scott and Steve Armstrong when Carl Oulette pinned Scott after a flip off Jacques Rougeau's shoulders.
- Dusty Rhodes calls that finishing move "Turn out the lights, the party's over".
- Rick Steiner pinned Bunkhouse Bunk after a clothesline in a really boring match.
- "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan pinned Prince Iaukea after a Reverse Heimlich in a total squash match.
- Sullivan didn't even use the Tree of Woe in this match.
- Like Nitro, this was another match where Sullivan was extremely vicious to his opponent. He even broke all of Iaukea's beads.
- In the post-match interview, Schiavone played a video for Sullivan. It was Woman and Benoit in a kitchen. Woman taunted Sullivan saying, "You can't find me" and "I'm my own woman". Benoit said to Sullivan, "You consider yourself the master of human chess. Well, my bishop just took your queen". After the video, Sullivan stood there speechless and Jimmy Hart led him off stage.
- Jeff Jarrett made John Blitz submit in a figure-four leglock.
- The match was nearly a squash. Blitz got all of one kick in.
- The Faces of Fear def. High Voltage when Meng pinned Rage after a "Kick of Fear" (gave him a boot to the breadbasket as Rage was coming off the top rope).
- In the nWo match, Marcus Bagwell pinned "Pistol" Pez Whatley after a reverse neckbreaker.
- Syxx introduced Whatley as "The only man to come back for more from the nWo".
- Bagwell was introduced as The Pretty Boy that's a Hardcore Redneck.
- As Bagwell was about to make his entrance, Hall said "Cue the porno music".
- Hall referred to "all of the nWo fans in Stamford, CT". Stamford, CT is where the WWF is headquartered.
- Hall said he was looking forward to Hogan punking Piper and seeing him "beating that transvestite like he owes you money".
- "Diamond" Dallas Page pinned "Squire" David Taylor following a Diamond Cutter.
- The announcers are still referring to The Giant as the son of Andre. Puhlease!
- The announcers kept saying how the crowd was going nuts for Page even though it was pretty silent. He does not seem to be going over as a face, he should stay a heel.
- In the post-match interview, Page said, "The are guys in WCW that would rather have a tarantula lay eggs in their ear than get hit with a diamond cutter.
- Arn Anderson and "Lord" Steven Regal wrestled to a time limit draw, thus allowing Regal to retain the World Television Title.
- Anderson had Spinebusted Regal and the referee was about to count the pinfall when the bell rang.
- I knew that this would be the ending when only five minutes into the match, the announcers starting taking note of how much time was left.
