This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 02/03/97
- The show opened with nWo music. Hogan, Vincent & DiBiase came to the ring. Hogan challenged Piper (who was scheduled to be there later) and said he'd put the title on the line tonight.
- Does this mean we get to watch Robin Hood again?
- Ultimate Dragon pinned Ray Mendoza, Jr. with a double chicken wing into a belly to back suplex into a bridge.
- There were so many blown spots in this match, I thought I was watching Glacier.
- I spoke too soon. "Immensely Popular and Multi-Talented" (as stated by Tony Schiavone) Glacier pinned Billy Kidman following a standing side kick delivered as Kidman was coming off the top rope.
- In reality, the kick was nowhere near his head.
- The match showed how good the WCW cameramen are. The slow motion replay after the match was from a different angle which made the kick look legit. Only when you play the original broadcast in slow motion do you see how far off it was.
- Ice Train pinned La Parka with a Big Splash.
- Just as I was trying to figure out why this match was going so long, they cut to a camera backstage where Hall & Nash had just knocked Lex Luger unconcious with a couple of metal pipes.
- The Horsemen (sans Arn Anderson, who I've read has a legit arm injury) were interviewed. They claim to have their act together again. Since Luger had been knocked out, Steve "Mongo" McMichael said he would take Luger's place against Jarrett later in the evening.
- Harlem Heat and The Steiner Brothers wrestled to a double DQ when both Faces of Fear and Public Enemy rushed the ring and started an eight-way brawl.
- The Faces of Fear and Public Enemy were seated with the crowd at the beginning of the match.
- At one point in the match, Stevie Ray knocked Rick Steiner's head gear off. He sort of looks like Meng without it.
- Ironically, the eight-way brawl ended when Public Enemy and Faces of Fear brawled back to the dressing room, leaving the four original combatants in the ring confused. They wanted to continue the match but the ref said it was already over.
- You gotta' wonder whether they got four additional guys involved just so the match would go to a non-finish since neither Harlem Heat nor the Steiners were willing to job.
- "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko pinned "Mean" Mike Enos with a small package on a reversal of a suplex.
- During the match, Syxx came to ringside and stole Malenko's Cruiserweight belt and ran off with it.
- Okerlund interviewed "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan, Miss Jacqueline (Miss Texas), Konan, and Jimmy Hart.
- This time, Okerlund did not try to get Miss Texas over.
- In fact, he pretty much did the opposite.
- Compared to Miss Jacqueline, Chris Benoit is pratically Winston Churchill when it comes to public speaking.
- Konan told Sullivan he'd finish Benoit off.
- "Diamond" Dallas Page pinned "Champ to Chump" Renegade following the Diamond Death Drop (Diamond Cutter from the top rope).
- After the match, Hall & Nash appeared with their pipes and started towards the ring.
- WCW Sting and Savage then appeared in the crowd. Page grabbed a chair and everyone backed off.
- "Das Wunderkid" Alex Wright pinned Super Calo following a missile dropkick.
- Konan def. "Crippler" Chris Benoit via DQ when Benoit threw Konan over the top rope (see below).
- Benoit used Arn Anderson's ring music for his entrance rather than his own.
- Benoit was really over with the crowd.
- During the match, Miss Jacqueline came to ringside with a leather belt. Benoit saw her and chucked Konan out the other side (and got DQ'd). Benoit then jumped out and grabbed the belt away from Miss Jacqueline. She then lifted the ring apron as if to get something from underneath the ring, but nothing was there (whoops!). She (legit) scurried around looking for whatever was supposed to be there but all she could find was a small, almost empty, plastic water bottle. She grabbed it and tried to look menacing with it, realized how stupid she looked, and threw it on the ground. Konan and Hart eventually dragged her off.
- Given this "unintentional" screw up and Okerlund no-selling her interview, I'm thinking she's not all that popular in WCW.
- Jeff Jarrett def. Steve "Mongo" McMichael via countout when Debra McMichael kept Mongo from getting back in the ring.
- Jarrett was really over with the crowd (they were in Memphis, TN, his hometown).
- "Rowdy" Roddy Piper came to the ring with his young son (around six years old) and turned down the title shot. Hogan and company came to the ring. Piper begged "Terry" (Hogan's real first name) to let him go home. Under duress so he could leave with his kid, Piper "admitted" that Hogan had beaten him and Hogan was the icon. As Piper was leaving, Hogan smacked Piper on the back of the head and that was all it took to change Piper's mind. Piper then gave Hogan and Bischoff double coconuts and cleaned house. Piper then accepted the title shot by saying "San Francisco, watch my fist go!"
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 02/02/97
WCW {Pro} was preempted by Jaws II this week
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 02/01/97
- Glacier pinned Ace Darling following a round kick to the back of the head.
- Schiavone referred to Glacier as "The man who has made such an impact to our sport". Puh-lease!
- Why doesn't the nWo just punk Glacier?
- The Amazing French-Canadians def. High Voltage when Carl Ouelette pinned Rage after a Flip, Flop, and a Fly (as named by Dusty).
- Disco Inferno made Trevor Allen submit with The Last Dance.
- Disco Inferno finally got his new leglock to work! It's a standing reverse figure-four leglock. And he didn't even mess up his hair!
- Hopefully, we've seen the last of that darling little angle.
- If Trevor Allen doesn't make it in wrestling, he has a fine career ahead of him as a Jan-Michael Vincent lookalike.
- Normally, the guy doing the music at the arena puts "Disco Fever" away after the match starts. Betcha he was surprised having to play it at the end, too!
- "Das Wunderkid" Alex Wright pinned Buddy Lee Parker with a German Suplex into a bridge.
- From Buddy Lee Parker of the State Patrol to The Leprechaun to Jack Boot to Sgt. Parker of the Army to Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker of the Army. This guy changes gimmicks more often than Ed Leslie (The Bootyman)!
- Ultimate Dragon pinned Super Calo with a double chicken wing suplex into a bridge.
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger racked La Parka.
- Boy, you just never know how a Lex Luger match is going to end, do you?
- Harlem Heat def. Public Enemy when Booker T. pinned Rocco Rock following a Heat Bomb.
- The end came after Johnny Grunge and Rocco Rock took a table spot that was meant for Sister Sherri.
- An old Scottish couple translated "Rowdy" Roddy Piper's words as he was being taken out on a stretcher from the 12/30 Nitro: "The battle is not over until you get home."
