This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 02/10/97
- Quick Quiz: In the pre-Nitro "This is my office" commercial featuring Sting, who are the two guys he beats up in the ring? Answer at the end.
- "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko def. Eddie Guerrero by countout when Guerrero left the ring to prevent Syxx from stealing his U.S. Title belt.
- Before the match, Malenko grabbed the mike and challenged Syxx to fight him "anytime, anywhere".
- Guerrero tried to shake Malenko's hand after the match but Malenko wouldn't do it.
- "Diamond" Dallas Page came to the ring and said he was tired of running. He sat down in a chair in the middle of the ring and said, "If something is going to happen, let it happen now". With that, Sting and the Macho Man came to the ring dressed in black. Sting did his thing shoving DDP with the bat and then Sting and Macho Man left. DDP then left, confused.
- Konnan pinned "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton following a bearhug into a DDT in a very quick match.
- The Giant pinned Ron Powers following a chokeslam.
- Lex Luger was supposed to wrestle Powers, but Bischoff said he couldn't do it without a doctor's note due to his injured hand. Bischoff also said that unless Luger got Bischoff a note tonight, he couldn't wrestle at Superbrawl.
- In the post-match interview, the Giant said he would beat the Outsiders by himself at Superbrawl and he would give one of the belts to Luger.
- In looking at the replay of Luger getting beaten last week, I've come to the conclusion that wasn't really Luger on the floor. You never see his face.
- The Steiner Brothers def. High Voltage when Scott Steiner pinned Rage following a Steiner Bulldog.
- The nWo took over the booth. Bischoff brought out Randy Anderson (the "ex" referee). Anderson brought his wife and two of his kids with him and begged for his job back. Bischoff first told the kids to tell their daddy he was still fired. Then, Bischoff said Anderson could have his job back if he wrestled Nick Patrick on next week's Nitro (Nick Patrick used to be a contending light heavyweight professional wrestler, Randy Anderson was a high school state champion in the 119 lb. weight class). Randy's wife told him no (doctor's orders, you know), but Randy said yes.
- I really don't like these angles involving kids.
- The Outsiders def. The Extreme when Kevin Nash racked Devon Storm and Scott Hall chokeslammed Ace Darling.
- Bischoff noted that The Extreme are from Stamford, CT (the home of the WWF). Zbyszko said that, given that, they are definitely not worthy of a title shot.
- Kevin Nash's rack of Devon Storm was totally lame. He had him upside down, as if he was going to give Storm an airplane spin. That doesn't hurt at all! Storm submitted anyway.
- In the post-match interview, Hall and Nash made fun of the Giant. Hall seems to have completely dropped his fake Mexican accent.
- "Lord" Steven Regal retained his WCW World Television Title against Ray Misterio, Jr. with, SURPRISE, a time-limit draw.
- The timekeeper totally blew the finish. Near the end, Misterio had Regal in a hurricarana, and at the two-count the timekeeper, thinking that this was where time was supposed to expire, panicked and started ringing the bell to signal time had expired. However, that wasn't the planned finish and the match continued. At the next pinfall attempt, which was the planned finish, time expired again for real.
- "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan pinned Maverick Wild with The Tree of Woe and a Reverse Heimlich.
- When Sullivan threw Maverick out of the ring, Miss Jacqeline cleaned Maverick's clock. She snapmared him, clotheslined him, and even bodyslammed him. As much as I don't like her, I must admit she can really wrestle.
- In the post-match interview, Sullivan and Jacqueline threatened Woman at Superbrawl. The angle was furthered a little by Sullivan stating he and Woman had lived together for ten years.
- In an upset, "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus pinned "Das Blunderpinned" Alex Wright following the Last Laugh.
- Alex Wright cleanly jobbed to Morrus in this match.
- Before the pinfall, it looked like Wright may have legitimately slipped off the top rope and fallen. Therefore, the finish may have been ad-libbed.
- Steve "Mongo" McMichael and "The Crippler" Chris Benoit def. Chavo Guerrero, Jr. and Jeff Jarrett when Mongo pinned Guerrero after a tombstone piledriver.
- Jarrett was roundly booed by the crowd.
- As Guerrero was piledrived, Heenan commented: "So much for La Bamba".
- Debra McMichael effectively lost the match for Jarrett and Guerrero by preventing Jarrett from tagging in by distracting him.
- A post match interview was done with the entire Horseman contigent. The angle of her being involved with Jarrett was furthered a little. The only other thing of note was someone in the crowd threw a wad of paper that stuck in Debra's hair throughout the entire interview. Mongo tried to get it out but he couldn't. It reminded me of Uncle Elmer getting married in the ring in the WWF. In the middle of the ceremony, the bride get socked in the face with a wet wad of paper. Luckily, she was wearing a veil.
- Piper came to the ring and he and Hogan jawed. Hogan was there via satellite, obviously with more important things to do. The only thing of note was Piper saying to Hogan: "The only difference between you and Dennis Rodman in San Francisco is the Rodman can jump". This is an obvious disparaging reference to the WWF's rumored signing of Dennis Rodman to do a few personal appearances with the WWF.
- The two guys Sting is beating up in the pre-Nitro commercial are High Voltage, Rage and Kaos.
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 02/09/97
- Disco Inferno made Butch Long submit with The Last Dance.
- Larry Zbyszko said Disco Inferno reminds him of Dean Malenko because Disco Inferno is the "Man of One Hold".
- "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus pinned Scott Armstrong following The Last Laugh (his moonsault).
- Throughout the match, the crowd was chanting for the moonsault.
- In the upset of the week, Mark Starr pinned Juventud Guerrera with a belly-to-belly into a bridge.
- WCW Sunday {Pro} is generally a crappy show, but they do occasionally have an upset.
- "Lionheart" Chris Jericho pinned Jerry Lynn following a missile dropkick.
- The Faces of Fear def. The Nasty Boys when Meng pinned Knobbs after a Mafia kick given while Jimmy Hart was distracting Knobbs.
- The Mafia Kick was no where near Knobb's head when it "landed".
- Jerry Saggs basically sleepwalked through the entire match. He was so lethargic that even the announcers were commenting on it.
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 02/08/97
- Villano 4 (who?) pinned Pat Tanaka with a Sunset Flip.
- Villano 4 is a masked wrestler from Mexico.
- Ultimate Dragon pinned Cheetah Kid with a double chicken wing into a German suplex.
- Ultimate Dragon was really over with the crowd.
- Jeff Jarrett pinned "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus with a sunset flip.
- The McMichaels made an appearance during the match. Jeff was getting beaten up at the time. Steve was happy about it, Debra wasn't.
- The Faces of Fear defeated Jerry Flynn and Mark Starr when Barbarian pinned Flynn after Meng back body dropped Flynn into a Barbarian powerbomb.
- Ron Powers (who?) pinned Buckhouse Buck after a tombstone piledriver on a reversal of Buck's attempt for the same.
- Maxx made J.L. submit with a full nelson following a swinging neckbreaker.
- Konan pinned Billy Pearl following a bearhug into a DDT.
- Miss Jacqueline came out during Jimmy Hart's interview after the match. Man, she is soooo out of place in this whole Sullivan/Benoit/Woman thing. I think she's going to ruin the angle.
- Road Block pinned Buddy Lee Parker following a powerslam.
- Road Block was featured some five or six years ago in a big article in Rolling Stone magazine. Back then, he was "The Rochester Road Block". It was about his struggle to make it in the pro wrestling business. The one interesting fact about the wrestling business I remember from the article was that, at the time, the going rate for a jobber was $300 a match. Anyway, Road Block's introduction to the business was when the WWF came to his hometown. He was working out and Hulk Hogan came into the gym. Road Block tried to ask him about how to get into the wrestling business and Hulk blew him off. That night at the arena, to prove Hogan wrong, right before Hogan's match was to start, Road Block jumped the railing and chased Hogan's opponent, One Man Gang, around the ring and pinned him. As a result, Road Block was arrested.
- "Das Wunderkid" Alex Wright pinned Devon Storm with a German suplex into a bridge.
- Eddie Guerrero and "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko went to a time-limit draw in a WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title match.
