This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
- Rumors abound about the Flexy Lexy / Hogan match on Nitro and the rematch at Road Wild. A number of different scenarios are being tossed around about what will happen on Nitro:
- nWo run in on Nitro, causing Hogan to be DQ'd. This is what you'd normally suspect right before a pay-per-view to build heat. While I think it is a likely scenario, since it what you'd normally expect, it may not happen.
- nWo run in on Nitro, causing Hogan to score a screwjob win. I think there is a very good chance of this happening. Luger's gotten two big wins over Hogan in the last two months and it may be Luger's turn to put Hogan over.
- Luger wins the title. Another scenario with a decent probability. However, given that his dominance over Hogan has already been established recently with the two big wins, I would expect this to be a result of nWo interference backfiring or an assist from Sting. If Luger wins the title, it won't be clean.
- Sting costs Luger the win as "payback" for the three titles that Luger has cost Sting over the years. This proposed scenario has practically taken on mythic proportions and become almost an urban legend. For months, everyone (including yours truly) has been theorizing about this one. However, at this point, the idea that it was ever even considered by the good people at WCW is probably a myth.
I think that if Luger does win the title on Nitro, he stands a chance of losing it right back to Hogan at Road Wild. However, if Luger doesn't win it on Nitro, I think it is pretty much a lock that he will win it at Road Wild. In that case, I don't think it will be an overly long reign given that either Kevin Nash or Sting will be wearing the belt very shortly.
- For whatever it's worth, I am not going to Phoenix this week so I should be watching Nitro from my home in Virginia. Therefore, I will be posting my update within a half hour after the live broadcast.
- Also, I will be watching Road Wild next Saturday. Look for my report approximately a half hour or so after the event is over.
- As for my question about who the Texas Hangmen were, I got a number of responses, too many to credit every one individually. They definitely wrestled as a team (individually named Killer and Psycho) in the AWF. Nadinet from WrestleNEWS says: "I am from Puerto Rico and the Texas Hangmen were here for a long time this year. They were the World Wrestling Council's Tag Champs. On indy's
they used an international object like a bell to smash their opponent's head. I bet that is not allowed in WCW! They have injured many wrestlers, via choking with the bells and ropes that they carried into the ring." According to Tom D., they were the USWA tag champs in 1991. Casey D. confirms this with "The Texas Hangmen began wrestling in the AWA but never won the titles. They also wrestled for the USWA as the Barroom Brawlers. While there, they won the belts from Robert Fuller (Col. Robert Parker) and Jeff Jarrett. They also wrestled in midwest independents and feuded with a team called Nitro. They also wrestle in Florida.".
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 08/02/97
- Syxx made "Hardwork" Bobby Walker submit to the Buzzkiller.
- The rest of the Wolfpack escorted Syxx to the ring, but did not come into play during the match.
- The Giant pinned Roadblock after a choke slam.
- As you might guess, the Giant wasn't able to hold Roadblock up in the air very long.
- Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth appeared in the crowd to taunt the Giant after the match. Giant waded through the crowd to go after them, but they made like bananas and split.
- Scheme Gene interviewed "Diamond" Dallas Page. Yadda, yadda, yadda.
- The (Ein)Steiner Brothers def. High Voltage when Scott Steiner pinned Rage following a mile-high tombstone piledriver.
- The Wolfpack appeared during the match. The action in the ring stopped and both the Steiners and High Voltage dared Hall, Nash, and Syxx to come to the ring. Nash grabbed his "bad back" and the Wolfpack retreated. The Steiners and High Voltage then resumed beating each other up.
- Meng def. "Jumpin'" Joey Maggs when Meng knocked Maggs unconscious some thirty seconds into the match and Maggs could not answer a ten-count.
- After the match, Meng slapped the Goozle on for good measure.
- Scheme Gene interviewed Flexy Lexy about his upcoming title shot(s). Yadda, yadda, yadda.
- The (Ein)Steiner Brothers and The Outsiders went to a no-contest when the show ended during the melee.
- This match was supposed to be The Outsiders vs. Public Enemy but the Steiners came out dressed as Public Enemy.
- The Steiners hid behind the table and the Outsiders and the announcers didn't realize it was the Steiners until they were in the ring, even though as they were coming to the ring Rick stuck his face into the camera and said "It's really us!".
- Schiavone correctly noted that it was the first time in a long time Rick Steiner has worn boots of the same color.
WCW Worldwide - Sunday, 08/03/97
- Brain and Tony hype Road Wild, Luger vs Hogan
- Billy Kidman jobs to Chavo Guerrero??
- Guess Chavo Sr. doesn't exist no more, because Jr was left off Guerrero's name
- A change in Worldwide in the next couple of weeks. What, they'll actually have good matches? Seriously, there has been talk about improving the weekend shows, because WTBS has supposedly been mad about the stuff they pass off as Saturday Night and Pro. Hogan's even supposed to be showing up sometime soon on Saturday Night. Hopefully, they'll also do the same for Worldwide.
- Bobby and Eddie Guerrero are friends now.
- Chavo wins by Frog Splash (I think, I turned for a sec, and it was over)
- Dean Malenko over Jerry Flynn by Texas Cloverleaf
- Tony talking about Jarrett forming his own group. In a related note, anyone else notice Debra talking to Alex Wright?
- Dean used a move resembling Craig Pittman's Code Red, as both Tony and Bobby point out. Gee, Dean's probably used it more lately that Pittman has..
- You don't realize how small Dean is, until you see him against a normal sized man like Flynn.
- Heck, I wrote the first line before the match started, and amazingly, I was right.
- Interview (for the Chicago House Show, Sep 7) Lee Marshall w/DDP.
- More matches:
- Chris Jericho vs Ultimo Dragon (I think, but they said for the cruiserweight title? It's either old, or ahead)
- Rey Misterio, Jr. vs Konan
- DDP - First match in Chicago in a while
- DDP - Crowd will be going crazy, going to take Savage down
- Nitro Highlights (Tuesday, I forget where)
- Stevie Richards, JJ Dillon, Mean Gene, and Raven try to sign a contract
- SR - "Your making almost as much money as I am."
- SR - "Ow, oh, I mean well"
- Steiners over Rick Fuller/Maxx by Top Rope Bulldog by Rick, with Scott covering
- Another match I can write before it happens. Not because of the Steiners, but because of Fuller.
- Maxx has great timing. He leaves DDP's side before DDP starts his rise to his top, and then he joins the DOD while Kevin Sullivan was on his way out.
- Talk about the Wolfpack, which Tony and Bobby classify as Syxx and The Outsiders. What happened to K-Dog?
- Quick match, with Steiners controlling it all.
- Super Calo over Hector Guerrero by Hurricarana
- Why?
- Impressive moves by men, but neither I nor the announcers cared. Instead, lots of hype about Sturgis.
- Super Calo vs La Parka has died down lately, hasn't it?
- Interview (for House Show) Ric Flair
- Bob Probert (Chicago Blackhawks enforcer) will be at ringside
- Flair "I'll beat you like the Blackhawks beat the Blues"
- Talk about if Hennig wants to be a major player, he has to beat one like Flair
- Meng over Johnny Swinger by the Goozle hold
- Meng came out to his pre DOD, Col. Parker days music, also wearing new tights
- Talk about how tough Meng is, his days as sumo wrestler
- No Jimmy Hart, as was pointed out by the announcers
- Total squash for Meng, as Swinger never got a move in.
- OK, Swinger finally got a move in, a no-sold dropkick.
- Brain - "Talking about Humans, and Meng is on the borderline, there's no one tougher then Meng"
- Amazing French Canadians w/Col. Rob Parker beat High Voltage
- I wasn't paying attention at the pre match, but I thought I heard about some kid named Vince who wanted the Brain's autograph. Oh no, I missed a WWF
joke.
- AFC goes to sing anthem, and High Voltage kicks them out of the ring.
- Talk about the winner of this match has to be looking at Steiners vs Outsiders and is in line for a shot.
- Hot tag to Kaos, who cleaned house
- AFC hits their finisher, Boston Crab with Top rope leg drop for the win
- Wow, two advertised people lose and Col. Parker doesn't interfere?
- Next week Steve Regal, Mortis, Jeff Jarrett, Barbarian
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 08/03/97
WCW {Pro} was preempted by Braves baseball this week.
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 08/04/97
- If you haven't checked it out already, you should check out my newest feature, The History of Blading. Normally, I don't promote my own features, but in less than 24 hours of it being online, I've gotten more positive responses on it than any other feature I've had. So, if you haven't seen it, check it out.
- In preparation for Lex Luger's rumored title win tonight (I'm typing this before the show), I thought I'd provide a little history on Flexy Lexy's previous World Heavyweight Title reign.
- Lex Luger had (supposedly) been booked to win the title from Ric Flair in mid-1991. Flair (supposedly) did not think Luger would make a good champion, and refused to job to Luger. End result being that Ric Flair left WCW as champion and went to the WWF, taking the belt with him. Flair was actually the legal owner of the belt and displayed it in his WWF interviews, claiming to be the "real World's Champion". WCW eventually paid some $25,000 for the belt's return. An announcement was made by WCW that Ric Flair could not come to terms on his contract, the title was declared vacant, and WCW wished him luck in his future endeavors.
- Barry Windham and U.S. Heavyweight Champion Lex Luger were declared top contenders for the World Heavyweight belt and had a cage match in Baltimore MD, on July 4th, 1991 at the Great American Bash to determine the champ. Lex pinned Barry at 12:25 following a piledriver to win the belt. A month and a half later, Sting would pick up the vacated U.S. belt, winning it in a tournament final with Steve Austin.
- Lex would hold the belt for over seven months until he was defeated by Sting at Superbrawl II in Milwaukee, WI on February 29th, 1992, when Sting pinned Luger at 13:02 following a flying bodypress. And what a difference five years makes. Also on the Superbrawl II card, Big Josh (aka Doink The Clown / "Maniac" Matt Borne) pinned "Diamond" Dallas Page, in a dark match no less. And, get this, Van Hammer (Ugh!) & Tom Zenk def. Ricky Morton and Vinnie Vegas. Who's Vinnie Vegas you ask? Kevin Nash! No wonder he's vowed to fight WCW with every breath in his body. If I was given that gimmick, I'd be pissed, too. Oh, well, at least it was better than his previous gimmick: Oz.
- Sorry for digressing. Of course, if Luger doesn't win tonight, me writing all this was probably a little silly, but it is interesting history nonetheless.
- By the way, I forgot to make my big prediction in my Saturday update. If the Luger/Hogan match is anything but the last match on Nitro, Luger will win the belt. If the Luger/Hogan match is the last match, Luger will not win the belt. Why? If Luger wins the belt, it will be earlier in the program so the announcers can discuss the "ramifications" of the victory and replay the ending so the fans can savor it. If it is the last match, the title won't changes hands as the title changing hands at the end of the program would give the announcers no chance to rebuild heat for Road Wild. Also, if Luger does win the title, look for him to be attacked in the locker room during the celebration party to give him an injury that will set up his loss of the title back to Hogan at Road Wild. Now, I'm typing this before Nitro starts and vowing to leave this prediction here no matter what. Thus, I'm now in a no-win situation. If I'm right, you'll think I wrote this after the fact and, if I'm wrong, I'll look like (even more of) a jerk.
- By the way, I'm home for the week. And I'll take Kung Fu: The Legend Continues over Robin Hood any day. Of course, I'd rather have the original Kung Fu, but I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
- Dark Match: Prince Iaukea defeated "The Candyman" Brad Armstrong.
- Let's get ready to rumble!! I want that job!!
- As Michael Buffer was earning his obscene amount of money for 30 seconds of work, some humanoid had a sign right in front of the camera. WCW wasted their money on Buffer tonight.
- Tonight is the 100th Nitro.
- Three hours long! Yow! Somehow I don't think it will be an extra hour of wrestling. More like an extra hour of filler I'm guessing.
- Nitro girls! Shwingggggg!!
- Steiners will have a bombshell tonight. Also, the Sting signing is to supposed to be tonight.
- Great crowd tonight. I don't think there is a single person not screaming their head off. And, I think every single person in the crowd has a sign.
- Bischoff and Hogan start off the show. Yadda, yadda, yadda.
- Wow, Hogan's double-pierced on the left ear.
- Hmmm, I've never seen so many people flipping the bird before.
- Curt Hennig pinned Mortis with a Fisherman's Suplex.
- On the way to the ring, Hennig spit and slapped his gum into the crowd. Hmm, I like souvenirs, but I think I'd pass on that one.
- Where the heck are the DDT Digest signs?
- Vandenberg took a couple of bumps during the match.
- Keystone Cops just took away a "Chyna is the Man" and an "Originnality 4 Life" sign from someone in the front row. You know, if you are going to have a sign in front of 10 million people with only three words on it, you think you'd run it through a spell checker.
- You know, when someone is caught in the Fisherman's Suplex, they actually have to make an effort to keep the outside shoulder down.
- Hennig's tenure in WCW has been less than impressive thus far, imho.
- Coming back from commercial, zoom right in a Monday Night RAW sign...what the??? Oh, all the guys holding it immediately tear it to pieces. I get it. A short montage of Sting. Like I said...an extra hour of filler.
- "The Man of 1,000 Holds who only uses about 10" Dean Malenko and Jeff Jarrett def. Hector and Jobber Guerrero, Jr. when Hector submitted to Malenko's Texas Cloverleaf.
- Hector and Jobber, Jr. came out to as many boos as cheers. Hector demonstrated his mastery of the English language by saying "Family...uh, we are family..."
- Oh my GOD!! I am laughing out loud! The camera zooms in on a "RAW Is Weak" sign. As the camera pulls in, the guy holding the sign pulls that sign away to show a sign behind it that says "Drew Blows!!" Ha, ha! I've been wondering how long it would take for someone to figure out how easy it would be to get a forbidden sign on TV that way.
- "Jarrett sucks!!" loud and clear from the crowd.
- Could Malenko's look of hatred for Jarrett after the match be any more obvious?
- As the next installment in the slowest moving angle in wrestling history, Stevie Richards with Okerlund at his side tries to get Raven to sign another contract. Raven spits and shoves again. Oooh, and tonight's installment is that Raven goes to punch Richards, Richards blocks it, and Richards says "You're not got to abuse me anymore". Raven gives a big smile and walks away.
- The guy with the laser pointer is at it again.
- Stevie Richards wears less clothes than the Nitro Girls.
- As Stevie goes into his spiel, Okerlund gives a great "This is getting old" look to the camera.
- Giant scored a hat trick pinning Lenny Lane, Scott DeMar, and "Jumpin'" Joey Maggs all at the same time after giving each a chokeslam in a one-on-three handicap match.
- Again, no music when Giant comes out.
- Savage and Elizabeth came out and taunted Giant again. Giant chased them back to the dressing room.
- New Slim Jims commercial with Macho Man in high school. This one is a classic. I'm not going to attempt to explain it here, you'll have to see it for yourself.
- Montage of Lex Luger. Lex racks the world.
- Public Enemy def. High Voltage when Johnny Grunge pinned Rage with a rollup.
- High Voltage's new music is great.
- The crowd camera just focused on the Hulk Hogan look-alike in the crowd for something like the twentieth time tonight.
- Wow, the three women they just focused on are huge.
- Keystone Cops just took away someone's "Syxx Suxx" sign.
- High Voltage had the match in hand when Rocco Rock went through a table outside the ring. Then, in a move telegraphed by Samuel B. Morse, Kaos held Grunge while Rage charged in. Grunge stepped out of the way and you know the rest.
- After the match, High Voltage attacked Grunge with pieces of the table. Looks like High Voltage and Public Enemy are setting up to feud.
- Nitro Girls dancing. Alex Wright joins them and does his ridiculous dance. Sitting here by myself, I was laughing so hard that I started coughing. Scheme Gene interviewed Alex Wright. Wright started the interview speaking German. He is becoming the official anti-American wrestler of WCW.
- WCW World Cruiserweight Champion "The Dancing Nazi" Alex Wright pinned "American Male" Scotty Riggs following a missile dropkick.
- At one point, Wright and Riggs hit each other with opposing flying cross body blocks. It looked like it didn't go quite right.
- Scheme Gene interviewed Flexy Lexy. Luger guarantees he will put Hogan in the rack and become the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion tonight.
- "Crippler" Chris Benoit def. Syxx via DQ when Jeff Jarrett interfered.
- Benoit is really over in Detroit.
- Someone's got a "Kay F'n Fabe" sign.
- Yow!! Benoit executed a suicide dive with a flying forearm.
- After the match, Jarrett was beating on Benoit and Mongo made the save on Benoit. Then, Malenko made the save on Jarrett. Benoit and Mongo were kings of the hill.
- On the Friday Night Nitro commercial, does anyone else recognize the big crowd scene at the end with the guy going "Can you dig it?!" It's from the classic gang movie The Warriors. A classic in the A Clockwork Orange genre.
- More Nitro Girls.
- Booker T. pinned Vincent following a Harlem Side Kick in a very quick squash.
- Okay, I stand corrected. The filler for the extra hour is wrestling. Squashes...but wrestling.
- Okerlund interviews "Diamond" Dallas Page. Wow, DDP is wrestling Flair later tonight. DDP says he respects Flair, he didn't have an issue with Flair, but now that Flair is courting Hennig...BANG!!!
- Wrath pinned Barbarian following the Death Penalty.
- Wrath didn't do his homework. He headbutted Barbarian. They only person hurt by that was Wrath.
- After the match, Meng came in to prevent further damage on Barbarian. Meng and Wrath stared each other down.
- The Steiner Brothers came out to make their big announcement to Mean Gene. And with them...Trillionaire Ted DiBiase! DiBiase gave an interview saying he's seen the light and he is going to take the World Wrestling...whoops! Ted started calling World Championship Wrestling the World Wrestling Federation. He realized his mistake and stopped himself but couldn't remember the name of the organization that he works for. Mean Gene had to help him out. And when Mean Gene is helping you remember your facts, you've got a problem.
- Ted mentioned that his father was a wrestler and that he died in the ring in 1969. True, but some of the mark mags will tell you "Iron" Mike DiBiase died of a neck injury. Don't believe it. He had a heart attack following a match.
- The Outsiders came out to taunt DiBiase and say he is a dead man.
- Kind of sad, really. The Outsiders are probably refusing to cleanly job to the Steiners so they have to bring in DiBiase so it will be a screwjob win.
- Konan/K-Dog made Psychosis submit to the Tequila Sunrise following a 187.
- Supposedly, Psychosis has a nasty habit of flipping fans the bird at house shows.
- After the match, Rey Misterio, Jr. came out on crutches. (I can see what's coming here a mile away.) Misterio gimps into the ring. Konan kicks one crutch away. Then Misterio is miraculously healed and knocks Konan out with the other crutch.
- With Konan out, Misterio says into the camera "You broke tradition, my man. K-Dog, wait until you see what I call myself". Now, I know that Mexican wrestlers removing their mask is sacrilege, but I didn't know that changing their name was an issue. This may have something to do with the rumor going around that Misterio is going to begin wrestling without his mask. Seems like a very weak rumor to me as I can't see any reason why Rey would do that.
- "The Cat" Ernest Miller and Glacier def. Silver King and Damien when Ernest Miller pinned Damien after a spin kick from the top turnbuckle.
- According to Mike Tenay, WTBS is going to run a special behind-the-scenes look at Lucha Libre wrestling that he was involved in producing.
- Ernest Miller legitimately hurt his wrist on a kick from Damien. Didn't look to be too bad, but he was definitely hurt and didn't cover it well. He looked like a wimp after it happened.
- Eric Bischoff came out and told J.J. Dillon to come out. Bischoff told Dillon to deliver a message to Zbyszko saying that if Zbyszko puts his hands on him again, Bischoff will kick Zbyszko right between the eyes. Dillon started giggling like a schoolgirl and said he wouldn't need to deliver the message and he left and the spot ended.
- Boy, J.J. Dillon is annoying. I sure would like to see this happen.
- Beginning of hour number three. I don't know about this three hour Nitro. It's a bit much for me. Nitro Girls have surrounded the announcers' booth and are dancing. Mmmmmm, Nitro Girls.
- "Diamond" Dallas Page def. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair via DQ when Curt Hennig interfered.
- Man, I am such a mark. When Ric Flair came out, like a jerk I've got both hands in the air with four fingers up. It's one thing to do it in the arena, but when you are home alone...
- Flair's looking back as he's coming out. Could it be??!! Ah, it's just Curt Hennig coming out to shake Flair's hand before the match.
- Heenan during the match: "Don't leave your set for anything. If your house is on fire, you can buy another one."
- Vicious powerbomb by Page on Flair during the match.
- Say, I'm still waiting for my Outsider pin set to arrive in the mail. ;-)
- Flair to the top turnbuckle. Guess what happened?
- For like the tenth time, the announcers say that Road Wild will be an "adult" pay-per-view, whatever that means.
- For the DQ, Hennig went to hit Page with an international object. Page knocked it out of Hennig's hands. Then, DDP picked it up and gave it to the referee to face Hennig and Flair bare-handed. Then, Page single-handedly cleaned house of Flair and Hennig. Wow! I can't believe Flair or Hennig agreed to that booking.
- Villano IV & V def. Hector Garza & Lizmark Jr. when Villano IV pinned Lizmark Jr. with a small package by slipping in and taking Villano V's place after Villano V had taken a beating.
- J.J. Dillon came to the ring to talk to Okerlund. J.J. said he had a contract for Sting to wrestle a free agent and he wanted to talk to Sting face-to-face. Sting, surprise, surprise, descended from the rafters. J.J. said the contract was for Sting to wrestle Curt Hennig. Sting tore it up to a round of boos from the crowd. Scheme Gene started in with "We need you! The fans need you!" Sting walked off and J.J. said he wouldn't give up.
- Umm, I don't claim to be a booker, but I would think that wrestling fans are starting to get a liiiiiiiittle tired of this Sting thing. When your biggest draw is starting to get booed, you might want to move the angle along a little bit.
- Michael Buffer's back. Let's get ready to rumble!!
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger racked and uncled "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan. Lex Luger is the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion!!!
- Hogan got pelted with crap on his way to the ring.
- Hogan was in control for most of the match.
- Luger powers out after the Leg Drop of Doom (LDOD)!
- Since my original posting, I've noticed a number of other wrestling web pages said that Luger "no-sold" the LDOD. I'm not sure if that is accurate or not. As I define it, "no-selling" is pretending like something didn't hurt you, i.e. Ric Flair chops someone to the chest and the stand straight up, angry and unhurt. However, powering out immediately after someone hits their big finisher, even though groggy, could be defined as no-selling, I guess.
- Luger is setting Hogan up for the rack. Nash, Hall, and Savage rush the ring. Luger cleans house of all of them. Randy Anderson, again showing that he is the greatest referee in the business, does not disqualify Hogan as long as Luger is in control. Luger racks Hogan and it's over!
- In an incredible show of unity after the match, WCW faces, heels (including Dean Malenko, Alex Wright, Barbarian, Mongo, and Chris Benoit), and referees rushed the ring to celebrate with Lex Luger. Seeing that, you cannot convince me there is not some legit heat against Hogan, Hall, Nash, and Syxx.
- In the celebration in the locker room, they were cleaning "nWo" off the belt with paint thinner.
- As the champagne was flowing in the locker room, one of my readers, Devin Dukes, pointed out that true to his real-life personality, rather than really join in the celebration, you could see Chris Benoit in the background standing there stone-faced chugging champagne.
- Cut to the nWo locker room with Hogan freaking out and throwing the cameraman out.
- See, this is why I never make predictions. I'm always wrong.
- This is all well and good, but I won't be happy unless Luger holds onto the belt at Road Wild.
Dave Kocinski sends in the following arena report:
- The dark match was Iaukea vs. Brad Armstrong (whoopee!!). Iaukea came out to boos, Armstrong to cheers...when the match was over it was the opposite. How the mighty champion has fallen.
- My vote for stupidest sign of the night was the guy in front of me..."Luger's new diet, rack of Hogan".
- During the Flair DDP match, Flair was shaking his ding-a-ling at some guy at ringside. To put it midly he was humping the air. I don't know if you saw that
because I think it was a commercial.
- During the Hogan-Luger match when the cameras went off, they would start no-selling each other's moves. Hogan put a bearhug on Luger and I could have sworn the two were in a passionate embrace. Cameras came back on and boom...headbutt by Luger.
- Also during the match, two guys got in a fight down by the ring...one guy pinned the other down and a guy standing near them fell to the ground and actually counted to three. The cops then came and escorted the winner away...to a victory party I am assuming.
John Thomas also sent in an arena report:
- The "Drew Blows" sign you mentioned is local lore. Drew Lane and Mike Clark (Drew and Mike) are Detroit's #1 Rock-n-Roll Morning show on WRIF Radio.
One time, Drew was sick and couldn't make an event and someone started chanting "Drew Blows". Now, anytime Drew and Mike are not at some sporting event, the chant goes up and the signs go up - indeed it did happen before the lights went on.
- I had a DDT Digest poster though the camera did not pick it up. Other signs of note:
- A. W. O. - ALEX WRIGHT ORDER
- Macho Man is Hogan's BITCH
- N.W.O. and that's the bottom line.
- Luger sucks - 4 Life
- Anyway the matches were good. Glacier looked rusty, though, and missed one roundhouse kick completely but still managed to send Damien hurtling out
of the ring.
- Detroit went absolutely nuts when Luger won the title.
- Everyone is PISSED at Sting and the boos were deafening when he tore up the contract and then left after stopping a few times when Mean Gene was talking about how the fans needed him.
- Jarrett was booed completely and everyone thought he was lame. Crowd favorites were the Horseman, Malenko, Luger. Hogan actually got a respecable amount of applause though he was also booed when he did his little flexing bull. Syxx was met with chants of "Faggot!".
- The crowd was absolutely stunned and went wild when DiBiase came out with the Steiners, the home town favorites (GO WOLVERINES!). They did not make the announcement like the TV announcers did that there was going to be a surprise from the Steiner Brothers so we didn't have any idea that it was going on.
