WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 01/10/98
- Unfortunately, Creed will no longer be able to do the Saturday Night reports. I am in the process of lining up people to cover the next few weeks until I find a permanent replacement.
- I got e-mail from Alex S. letting me know Main Event has been cancelled. Alex will be staying on the staff on a fill in basis and helping out with other projects.
- There was a dark match between Sting and Hogan after Thunder on Thursday. Sting got his first non-controversial win over Hogan with the Scorpion Deathlock. It was a grudge match and not for the held up title.
- I forgot to mention it in my Thursday report, and I saw it again on WCWSN. The new Twix commercial is pretty ironic in light of recent events with Michael Kennedy and Sonny Bono. A girl on a bicycle goes headfirst into tree. I'm actually impressed that they didn't pull the commercial so as to not offend "sensitivities".
- Flair 3:16 - "It ain't just being the man, it's staying the man! Whoo!"
- WCW World Cruiserweight Champion Juventud Guerrera pinned El Dandy following a 450 Splash.
- Wow! This show must have been taped Friday, or it must have had a confused audience, as Air Juvy came out wearing the Cruiserweight belt.
- After missing a move from the top, El Dandy moved himself into position for the 450 Splash.
- The 450 Splash is impressive, but I don't understand how the spinning makes the move any more effective.
- Bill Goldberg defeated Barry Horowitz with a jackhammer.
- Hmmm...Goldberg vs. Horowitz. I wonder what Jimmy The Greek would say about this one.
- The match lasted less time than it took me to type the previous statement. A tackle and a jackhammer was the entire match.
- After that excitement, Duggan's next. Ugh.
- "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan pinned Mark Starr following a kneedrop to the head.
- Hacksaw started the match by getting the crowd into a "USA" chant since Mark Starr is, well, from the USA.
- Boy, did that ever suck.
- After the match, Duggan: "I know it's the nineties, but if anyone calls me 'sweet', I'm going to punch them right in the mouth." Uh, what does the 1990s have to do with anything?
- Okerlund interviewed Martel. Wow, if that interview was the best they could do, I'd be curious to see the outtakes.
- A match between Ernest Miller and Glacier never happened. Miller was in the ring, Glacier's music started and Glacier just fell out of the entrance. He'd just been beaten up in the back by Mortis and Wrath.
- That was the best entrance Glacier could ever make.
- Meng pinned Fit Finley with the Tongan Death Grip.
- Jimmy Hart distracted Finley to set up the finish.
- Give Finley credit for at least trying to fight his way out of the hold with an eyerake and headbutt.
- Brad Armstrong made Jumpin' Joey Maggs submit to an On The Mat Scissor And Achilles Tendon Bend.
- I liked Brad better with long hair.
- I had to tear my bookshelf apart to find my copy of 'Judo' Gene LeBell's book, Pro-Wrestling Finishing Holds to get the name of the finisher.
- Okerlund interviewed Booker T. and told him it was great that he got the opportunity to win the title "on the 29th at Starrcade". Uh, he won it at Nitro on the 29th. Could Okerlund be any more of an embarassment?
- Curt Hennig pinned Renegade with the Fisherman's Suplex.
- Renegade's really getting fat.
- Renegade starting acting like Ultimate Warrior and Hennig just rolled his eyes.
- DDP did a one-man interview. Nothing notable.
- WCW World Television Champion Booker T. pinned Disco Inferno following a Harlem Hangover.
- Disco has a new headband.
- Nice pop for Booker T. when he came out.
- Rick Martel made Mark Truran submit to the Quebec Crab.
- Mark Truran must be Australian, given the boomerang he brings to the ring.
- Schiavone is now saying Nick Patrick's count was not as fast as he originally thought, but it was "faster than Nick Patrick usually counts".
- Rick Martel really does look great.
- WCW U.S. Heavyweight Champion "Diamond" Dallas Page pinned "Lionheart" Chris Jericho following a Diamond Cutter off the top turnbuckle in a successful title defense.
- Chris Jericho came out with another coat for Dave Penzer.
- DDP left through the crowd.
- Jericho threw another tantrum after the match and ripped Penzer's coat off again.
