This Week In The WCW
This Week In The WCW
WCW Monday Night Nitro - Monday, 04/28/97
- The show started with clips of Flair winning the title from Vader at Starrcade '93. Looks like WCW is once again showing clips of current WWF stars jobbing while they were in the WCW. They are trying to counter the buzz over the Vader in Kuwait angle.
- This match was famous for the triumphant return of Ric Flair from "retirement". Sid Vicious was supposed to have faced Vader, but Vicious got fired due to the stabbing incident with Arn Anderson. It was an incredibly stiff match and Flair legit lost a couple of teeth. In the clips shown tonight you could definitely see that teeth were missing and his gums were bloody.
- Flair and Piper came out and challenged the nWo to face them tonight.
- "The Man of 1,000 Holds" Dean Malenko retained the WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title by making Prince Iaukea submit with the Texas Cloverleaf.
- Malenko was really over with the crowd tonight.
- I guess Iaukea earned the title shot with that loss to Chavo Guerrero, Jr. this past weekend.
- There was an inset of Jeff Jarrett saying he wants a U.S. Title shot at Slamboree.
- Another fight in the stands tonight. Iaukea was paying more attention to the fight in the stands than the one in the ring.
- Syxx made Juventud Guerrera submit with the Buzzkiller to retain the WCW World Cruiserweight Title.
- At one point, Guerrera was slumped in the corner. Syxx had his hips against Guerrera's mouth and bucked them. Pretty rude but the crowd enjoyed it.
- Guerrera blew so many spots in this match I thought I was watching Glacier.
- The Outsiders and Syxx came out and took over the booth. The nWo is not over in Norfolk, VA. They did not really answer the question of whether they would face Flair and Piper tonight. Nash said, "Whatever". They are demanding 75% of the gate in Charlotte to appear.
- "Crippler" Chris Benoit def. "Lord" Steven Regal via DQ when "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan interfered.
- Regal got busted open during the match and the camera crew went to the far away camera angle again. I didn't see him get busted open but I knew it had happened when the camera angle changed. Gee, it's an interesting coincidence that this has happened to Regal twice on Nitro. Both times he was wrestling Benoit. Hmmm, a coincidence indeed.
- Regal got DQ'd when Sullivan came in and pulled Regal off and started beating on Benoit. It spilled outside the ring and Jacqueline got a few shots in. Meng then got his new nerve hold on Benoit and wouldn't let go. Oddly enough, Regal tried to make the save on Benoit and was rebuffed by Sullivan. Finally, Woman got Meng to release the hold.
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger and The Giant def. The Amazing French-Canadians when The Giant pinned Jacques Rougeau following a chokeslam.
- Oh, no. Heenan said he was going to be on ManCow's radio show in Chicago. He said ManCow is hotter than Howard Stern. I'm sure we'll hear a dissenting opinion on Howard's show tomorrow.
- The Giant held Rougeau in the air for quite a while before slamming him. Luger racked Oulette for good measure. Hard to believe Rougeau pinned Hogan three weeks ago and Oulette beat the Giant via DQ given the extremely quick job tonight.
- This hour long Nitro is making them rush through everything tonight. The AFC didn't even get to sing the Canadian National Anthem.
- Steve "Mongo" McMichael pinned The Barbarian after a whack on the noggin with the Haliburton.
- Debra handed Mongo the Haliburton while he was slumped in the corner. She then distracted the ref so Mongo could do the dirty deed.
- Flair and Piper came to the ring. Flair was in street clothes. Flair called the nWo out. Flair said, "Hall and Nash, I don't know about you two, but Syxx, I know I can whip your ass! I've been World Champion more times than you've had pieces of ass!" Hey, I didn't say it, I'm just reporting it.
The nWo music played. Then papers came RAINING down from the ceiling. The papers said "Tradition bites! nWo 4 life" Suppoedly, this whole "Bite me!" thing that started last week is a set up for a new line of "Bite me!" t-shirts.
The Outsiders and Syxx came out. The Outsiders sent Syxx to the ring. Flair met him in the aisle and they started duking it out. Nash and Hall got involved and got low blows for their trouble. The three of them ganged up on Flair and Flair screamed for Piper's help. The nWo administered a beating while Piper just stood there in the ring. Then as the show was just about to end, Piper was given his cue and he ran out and got threw one punch and the show ended.
WCW {Pro} Wrestling - Sunday, 04/27/97
- Konan pinned Johnny Swinger following a 187.
- Ice Train pinned La Parka following a Train Wreck.
- Zbyszko: "Ice Train's got the biggest mouth I've ever seen. You could park a car in there!"
- "The Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus pinned Adrian Byrne following the No Laughing Matter and The Last Laugh.
- "Lord" Steven Regal made Doc Dean submit with a Regal Stretch.
- Since the crowd wanted Doc Dean to win, they encouraged him on with a "USA" chant. Someone ought to tell them that Doc Dean is from the U.K. as well.
- Chavo Guerrero, Jr, pinned Prince Iaukea with an Oklahoma Roll.
- From Television Champion to jobbing to Chavo Guerrero, Jr. on Sunday {Pro} in less than a month. Boy, when Iaukea's push ended, it ended in a big way.
- Oddly enough, Iaukea was roundly booed by the crowd and Guerrero was really over. Given it was Sunday {Pro}, it could be that the match was six months old.
WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 04/26/97
WCWSN was only an hour long this week
- Public Enemy def. J.L. and Villano IV when Rocco Rock pinned J.L. after a drive-by.
- After the match, Villano IV went after Public Enemy. Villano IV got tabled for his trouble.
- In terms of a laughable spot, that was it. No one should be dumb enough to attack two guys. Much less if they brought a table to the ring.
- WCW World Television Champion Ultimo Dragon pinned Juventud Guerrera after a Running Liger Bomb.
- So you've got Ultimo Dragon. He's a great fighter, was trained by Bruce Lee, never speaks, all business in the ring, and wears a mask. All the ingredients for a great mega-heel, right? All that is lost when he poses for a photo with Sonny Ono before the match every time.
- The Steiner Brothers def. The Power Company in a squash when Scott pinned one of the two Power Company guys (they don't have names) with a Steiner Bulldog.
- Mortis pinned Mark Starr following a single leg bulldog from the second turnbuckle.
- Mortis' ring entrance is second only to Glacier's in terms of length. My rule is that if your entrance takes longer than it takes a bride to make her entrance at the wedding ceremony, you're probably taking too long.
- "The Total Package" Lex Luger racked Meng. The Torture Rack Luger had on Meng was really lame.
- The show wasn't a total loss. The guys dressed as Batman, Superman, and the Joker were there again. During this match, the Joker got Superman in the Human Torture Rack out in the crowd. It was pretty funny.
