From Marcus Davis:
I think they actually do have points in chess. A pawn is worth 1 point, Bishops and Knights 3 points, and on up to the Queen which is worth 10 points. I'm not sure of what practical value the points are, but I do remember seeing a points sheet for chess once.
From Matt Etling:
To address your closing comment on the Worldwide report: yes, there are points in chess. Different pieces have different point values, with the most important worth more points.
Consider... with all the overuse of the word "wood" by Hogan lately, the Disciple being hung upside down from a wall and then found passed out in a bathroom, and the subsequent defection of the Disciple to the oWn (it pains me to use that phrase), and finally Hogan's level of anxiety over all of this (gimme back my Disciple!)... you could say that Warrior has managed to capture Hogan's queen.
I don't know what's more disturbing... the simple way that joke fit together, or the fact that we've finally found a way for Larry Z.'s "human chess" analogy to work.
Hmm...I had always thought that you could only win, lose or draw in chess. And, in the case of Warrior and Hogan, it doesn't matter who wins or loses, they ain't drawing. (Thank you, thank you.)
Was checking out some other websites and saw something I thought ya'll might like. It was at http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Field/9099/ (The Whatever Happened To ... Homepage) in the historical features section. The title is A Fan Remembers. The author mentions that he sent some of this to you before and that some of it has changed. It tells about the old Gulf Coast wrestling group. The article says a wrestler named Terry Boulder used to wrestle in this fed. Terry Boulder is now Hollywood Hogan, as I'm sure you know. He had a fellow that wrestled as his brother back then his name was billed as Eddie Boulder, and he is now known as The Disciple. Just thought you might want to see just how long that Ed Leslie has been riding Hogan's coattails.
Hogan had a couple other matches on Worldwide. One, he teamed with Savage against Orndorff and Roma. In another, he and Sting pretty much squashed The Bruise Brothers (aka 8ball & Skull). The match ended in seconds with both guys hitting their trademark setup moves and finishers on the twins.
I remember another non-match, before Slamboree '95, with Hogan on Worldwide. Savage and Hogan were scheduled to fight Dick Slater and Bunkhouse Buck, as a warmup for their match vs Flair and Vader. Flair and Vader were scheduled to wrestle after, vs a couple of jobbers. However, Hogan and Savage didn't show for their match, and Slater and Buck faced the team that Flair and Vader were supposed to. So, Flair and Vader come out for their match, and they face "the back up team", The Hot Tamales. Two guys with really ugly costumes, wearing masks and those foam Macho Man hats. I bet you can guess who was under the masks. Flair, Vader, and Arn, who was backing them up, realized real quick and took off. Hogan and Savage took off their masks, and Jimmy Hart and Renegade came out to celebrate with them...
Cubs Fan,
I will first admit I'm a WorldWide junkie -- I also liked Main Event and {Pro} when they were still on the air as well -- mainly because of the star squashes and the enhancement talent matches. Some of these guys are just going through the motions, true, but others have some talent and deserve better. These shows were practically their only outlet for anything other than looking good while doing their job, which mostly is making others look good. I was disappointed last week when they made the inevitable announcement that WorldWide was assuming the role of WCW week-in-review program. However, I was gratified somewhat when about halfway through the program when Schiavone mentioned a "double main event". I expected to see several matches repeated from the week, but was pleasantly surprised when he mentioned the matches were Disorderly Conduct vs Bulldog and Neidhart and Saturn vs Putski. Yes! WorldWide exclusives! And they turned out to be more of the Orlando tapings matches -- so they haven't run the well completely dry yet. I've watched WorldWide since the early 90's, and even attended a WorldWide TV taping in Topeka, KS before they went to the mass taping format in Orlando, so I'm saddened to see such a venerable program fall to these depths (I felt the same way about Main Event and {Pro} when they followed the same route). Still, I'll watch as long as they come up with a few new matches each week, I guess. Hey, last week Zybysko mentioned the Nitro Girls showing up -- was I the victim of a shameless bait and switch plug to get me to watch? Victims are always the last to know! Oh well, maybe they've got an Eaton/Maggs vs Villanos rematch still in the can for future airing.
From the timing of the last taping and that most of the spoilers I posted up here a few months ago still haven't happened, I figure we got at least half the taping left. And, since we have only 2 matches instead of 5, I figure we'll probably still have enough matches to last to 1999. I wonder...when they do run out, will they just tape a few extra at a WCWSN or Thunder taping, or will they just forget about them. And, sorry, the closest to Nitro Girls I'm seeing are the people in the 1-900 commericals this time of night...
