WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 08/21/99
- Welcome to Saturday Night! Tonight's main event is Psychosis vs. Chris Benoit.
- This show marks the end of my tenure at DDT Digest. I've written these TV reports for two years now, including a year and a half here at this site. Although I began writing for DDT Digest as a WCW {Pro} reporter and I subbed for the "bigger" shows on occasion, the best moments I covered all transpired here on good ol' Saturday Night. So, not having found any other tribute to Saturday Night online, I leave you with my WCWSN
superlatives for the past year or so:
- Funniest moment and biggest upset: Pepe defeats Lenny Lane (12/12/98).
Our memories of Pepe are now bittersweet due to his tragic fate, but Pepe did indeed begin his wrestling career with a victory over Lane.
- Runner-up (funniest moment): Chavo pokes Ciclope in the eyes of his mask! (10/31/98)
- Runner-up (biggest upset): Lash LeRoux finally lands on the map with his first WCW victory over, who else, Lane. (2/6/99)
- Biggest "Name" Match: Giant vs. Lex Luger (11/7/98). Somebody in the WCW booking department must have been nuts, but we did in fact Flexy Lexy take on the Big Show on this very program.
- Runner-up: Bret Hart vs. Booker T. What the heck was the Hitman doing on WCWSN? (11/28/98)
- Best Interview: Stevie Ray with Mean Gene (5/15/99). With just one small slip, Stevie Ray enshrined himself as
a DDT Digest legend.
- Runner-up (tie): Chatting with Mean Gene, Chris Jericho gave a shot out to his Martian Jericholics (12/26/98)
- Runner-up (tie): Speaking with Lee Marshall, Nor-man Smi-ley first told the world how to pronounce his name on the Muthaship. (12/19/98)
- Best match: Fit Finlay vs. Chris Jericho (10/17/98). Nobody worked harder on WCWSN from match-to-match and interview-to-interview than Chris Jericho. This time-limit draw for the TV Title was
easily one of Finlay's best matches in WCW, thanks to our Paragon of Virtue. Taped 10/6/98, Jericho ncludes it on his list of favorite matches.
- Runner-up: Bobby Eaton and Kenny Kaos defeat La Parka and Silver King. The tag tournament was a great idea. Letting your most loyal employee get a win was another. (1/9/99)
- Worst WCW Saturday Night gimmick: Chris Adams, Judo Master (1/16/99). Did they really expect that this would get Adams over?
- Best WCW Saturday Night gimmick: Mr. Hole-in-One (10/31/98). Barry Darsow, who has a history of gimmicks that even Ed Leslie would be admire, wrestled as a PGA Tour-wannabe during late 1998 and early 1999.
The gimmick's zenith was Darsow's match versus Barry Horowitz on the 10/31/98 edition of WCWSN. True enough, this would normally merit the standard DDT Digest complaint of "that's not wrestling!", but we were laughing too hard to notice.
- Now on to the show...
